When Ian was talking about his deceased dad and uncle still travelling with him, that was beautiful. I'm sure many people feel the same way about friends and family who have passed on that were close to them. I know I do.

Listening to Ian talk about his friends and family that have passed and how they are still with him puts the song Perfect Strangers in a whole new light for me.

Ian Gillan underrated? Since when? He's acknowledged as one of the best ever. How's that underrated?
Hardly underrated, except the US possibly. Intelligent, quite so. Charismatic for sure. Interesting, absolutely. Humble? IMO very far from it. In this interview he seemed quite grumpy, pretty full of himself and quite grandiose - as I think he always does. He's smart but not nearly as smart as he thinks, and a lot of his recollections change from time to time (especially when it comes to Blackmore). And, again, IMO, he shouldnt' really be on stage the way he sounds now. His voice broke in the late 80s, and although I still enjoyed seeing DP 20 years ago, it's gotten even worse since then (even more IMO, Morse's degrading capability, Airey's boring playing displeasing sound, and the weird, offputting live mix they've had since about when Lord left hasn't made things better).
WIKIPEDIA is actually a CRIMINAL enterprise. (I know personally, bc they printed LIES about me and blocked correction. They also BLOCKED any truths. Systemically. It's an ESTABLISHMENT tool.)

(THAT's how serious this shit is) -- and for months they let vandals keep up "the chronically-unemployed [my name]".... which wasn't even remotely true. (EX: I'd had the same job for 15 years!) Wiki made not one "honest mistake". This one glaring example [which PROVED vandalism, duh!] is just one of hundreds in my entry!)

For me, Ian Gillan is the first true rock frontman. There may have been several important ones before him, but he had it all: the flamboyant stage persona, the powerful voice, the rock star appeal, etc.
Ian Gillan is the total package and still is despite the voice being a bit reduced. He's still up there strutting as well as he can at his age. He can't stop. Who came before him, anyway? Name one. Look up dates.
there were a few greats before him, but I think he truly epitomized the hard rock/heavy metal frontman. Not even Robert Plant could compare to Gillan in his prime@@TheJoan48

While Gillan is my most favorite frontman, I love Jim Morrison and Daltrey too for their great presence.

Really weird...In 1983, I was in 8th grade, 13 yrs old, and my best friend sat behind me in History. One day, he was singing lyrics (he had older brothers into metal) that really interested me. The lyrics were to a song called Trashed by Black Sabbath. The album had just come out. That weekend I ran out and bought my first real metal album...Born Again. Thank you, Mr. Gillan for a life of metal. It's been a wild ride.
Ian Gillan. The original true heavy metal vocalist. His crown was eventually taken away by Rob Halford, but him aside, nobody else was singing like Gillan.

@ Doom Rock No, Robert Plant might have been able to compete with him for being a great singer or having the higher vocal range, but even Plant couldn't rival him for hard rock/heavy metal singing and screams.
Halford came to the scene in early 70s... and that was the end of the competition. People usually remeber him as a vocalist he'd been during 80s, who showcased terrific attacks and screams but had some unstable moments on his weaker ranges and off nights. But in 70s, Halford's singing was a freak of nature, bar none. Well-controlled and perfect-pitched screams could go up to B5, no signs of strains on mid-highs, majestic pipes that easily beats any singers in their heydays. Gillan and Dio might have been second or third... but that 70s Halford was a demigod.
Ian Gillan in 'Concerto for Group and Orchestra' is the handsomest man I've ever seen, and the lyrics to the second movement were also beautiful. I'm surprised he's not more widely known as he had everything: looks, voice, and interpretative genius. A wonderful man.

If it weren't for American blues in particular, which was invented here,most of those bands you mention wouldn't have been inspired to create what they did in the first place ESPECIALLY Led Zeppelin.

What Ian describes about his father's spirit entering his body happened to me when my daughter died suddenly. I heard the news, fell to the floor and felt her spirit enter my body right in the center of my chest. I was very touched hearing Ian describe this. It verifies what happened to me was real. His comments about Jon were very moving as well. Thank you, Ian, for this.

Absolute Legend and very intelligent man. We are blessed by such a great musical genius.
I saw DP in the mid 80's with Blackmore. What a show. To cap the night off, after the show the lights went out for a minute then the house lights came on and there was Ian at the front of the stage yelling and cussing up a storm. Apparently, one of the bouncers pulled a roady off the stage thinking it was a fan and pissed Ian off something fierce.
I watch Gillan singing 'no laughing in heaven' a couple of times a week, great lyrics, great energy, sooooo funny. Always wonderful to hear him speak, such a soothing voice.
I love Born Again album as well as its mix. It is dirt and it is heavy. One of the best rock and roll albums with the heaviest atmosphere that I ever heard!

IN FACT, Deep Purple were MORE INFLUENTIAL than ZEP / SABBATH.... COMBINED. Ian Gillan was the one they ALL wanted to sound like.
Judas Priest. KISS. Van Halen. Iron Maiden. Yngwie. Metallica. AND ALL THE REST say it was DP, DP, DP who they wanted to be. (Sabbath inspired a zillion garage bands, but few giants. Zep inspired a few hair metal bands and some other acts, like Billy Squier, and Whitesnake, but DP was THE ONES. "IN ROCK" is the BIBLE of metal! And the song "FIREBALL" invented the entire speed metal genre!
SO SAD that DP always gets put last in the ZEP / SAB / DP triangle.
(DP were LESS CONSISTENT, so there's that. Even their peak line-up put out some real filler!)

The genius, the spectacular, the voice of some seriously killer jams! Love Deep Purple for going on 45 years now. It’s still amazing how great they have been for sooooooo long! He and Ritchie were irreplaceable!: He’s got the voice of s lifetime!
It's amazing to see the evolution of these series, Graham's interviewing skills and the constant increase in prestigiousness of the guests. Why did this happen? Because the people behind the scenes actually give a shit and they provide us with really high-quality content. For free, none the less.

He is one of the best 5 lead singers in hard rock. The entire band is great and over looked by a lot of rock people. During the 1960's, 1970's and then back again in the latest 1980' s and 1990's until 2018. He has sang in some of the best bands in rock history. When D.P. quit with Tommy bolin in the band it was very sad. Peace rock fans!
Saw him in 87, house of blue light tour. they played lots of songs from perfect strangers. left me speechless! to this day can't come up with words to describe. Best concert I've ever been to. I've seen lots. Santana, Bad company, Pink Floyd, Heart, and legendary The Who to list a few. I know music!!!
I was probably 13 years old when I first heard In Rock when it was released. No other music genre, group, performer has had such a positive impact on me, ever.
Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore probably think more of each other than they are willing to let on.
It will only be apparent when one of them passes and then we'll see the reality.
They are not enemies, they are rival alphas with great respect, but also stubborn.
A great partnership in rock.

This man's notes on "In Rock" are absolutely amazing. It's a shame his voice has declined, but at his age and all he's done it's ok. He'll forever remain one of the best Metal/ Hard Rock vocalists of all time.
I don't think "declined" is the right word. Sure, it's changed and he can't the old stuff anymore, but he's become an amazing soul singer. His work on Infinite is spot on.

In case you guys aren't aware, EVERY singer's voice declines with age..! It's the one nasty truth about being a singer, that the vocal chords etc just deteriorate over time and it's normal for a singer to lose as much as a couple of octvaes from their range by the time they get older.
Check out Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Bruce Dickinson, Geddy Lee etc etc. Not one of them can hit the same crazy shrill highs that they once did, especially after years of live touring and often excessive partying. It's a sad fact about being a vocalist.
I'm not stating that some surgery didn't mess Gillian up or what have you though, just trying to shed some light on a sad fact of a vocalist's life. :)

We obviously knew, smart ass. Nonetheless, its a shame Gillan lost his voice, imo the best rocker voice there ever was or is. Glen Hughes still has a crazy good voice though, somehow.

Deep Purple's 'Made In Japan' album, one of the greatest live albums ever. The improvisation is simply genius and not to mention Ian's voice was pure magic.

Its ok Ian, Ozzy can't remember the words to Iron Man to this very day. Hence all the teleprompters all around the stage whenever Ozzy performs live. Damn shame they weren't around in the mid-eighties during his (Ian's) brief tenure for the Born Again album and tour.
He explains it away, but he's been drunk for most of 4 decades. He was just too drunk to remember the words. Still love him though.
to be fair, MOST big singers use prompters, and have for over a decade.
I'm not famous and even I use cheat sheets in some of my bands, b/c I'm stoned and drunk and having fun onstage!
FUNNY STORY:
in my first band, my lead singer was such an idiot who couldn't remember his OWN songs that I HAD TO WRITE OUT THE LYRICS ON SHEETS OF PAPER and I taped them to the floor. HA: my singer grabbed the sheets and put his foot up on a stage monitor like most singers.... but he had taped the lyrics... TO HIS LEG so he could see them easier!!(Above his knee!) HA!

Imo, Born again had Sabbaths best riff, "Zero the hero" now, he said they still write together sometimes. what are the chances Tony and Ian team up and get a couple others in there and form up a band called "Born Again" much like was done with Dio? You better believe id love to see that concert. A new album with his voice, Tonies riffs, how could it not be epic? and maybe a bones section on there with some epic live or demo versions of some songs. Just saying, i think it would be amazing.
It sounds too close to Paradise City, which I hate. I know it came out before the GNR hit , but I heard the latter before I heard the Sabbath tune.

I would like to see an interview with Ian Gillan talking about his experience with the recording of Jesus Christ Superstar album!
Gillan himself states in an interview from 1970, that indeed he was approached by Deep Purple prior to their hiring of Rod Evans, but he wanted to stay in E6.
He was then contacted again after the firing of Rod, and he accepted.
A fascinating insight into the great IG's thoughts and reminiscences. Very enjoyable.
Band after Band even the supers like Purple always display the day to day strife and pressure between members and mgmt. Another reminder for us who came up with them that all we had to do back in the day was "enjoy the art" for 5 or 10 bucks. Loved this Band.
Oh my god this was one of the best WFF episodes I've watched...and I'm pretty sure I watched them all at this point...some multiple times.
Not only the first "rock song",but the very first "song" I remember was Smoke On The Water, back in '1974-75'.
I wasn't quite 6yrs old yet...I've been a huge fan ever since.
They were ALL masters of their craft.
