    Definitely the best Volca FM tutorial I've seen, I will most definitely be purchasing one of these soon. I get fed up with people complaining about how hard programming FM synthesis is, I had a DX100 for years and absolutely loved the work flow. The fact this is so much cheaper and so much more in depth than the reface DX is astounding to me, Yamaha really dropped the ball there!

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah thanks! The Reface DX has a screen and touch controls and stuff. I get that it has to cost more. But I think it should have supported DX7 files after all...

    • @Oljekrisen
      @Oljekrisen ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you translate the dx7 frequency tune and fine-tune values into the volca numbers? Same goes to dx7 note values, I have made my own note naming in my scrapbook but I don't understand the frequency naming, and I haven't got a dx7 sadly :(

      cuckoomusic
      Yes my man. Check my channel if you have a chance to see what I was able to do with both DX7 models. And thats another thing alot of people are overlooking about the miracle Korg have given us. THE UNISON FUNCTION. When you add that to an FM BASS or strings and chorus. FM becomes as fat and powerful as analogue.
      I will let you know when I start uploading demos of the VOLCA FM from March. Just the drum sounds FM is capable of are amazing. Thats why ive been an FM addict since 1991.

    Just revisited this video because I couldn't figure out how to make a tremolo on the volca FM and remembered that you did kind of the same with your "pseudo echo". When I found the part I saw that you had the same problems figuring it out I had LOL. Anyway, without your videos I guess I wouldn't have understood how FM works at all. Meanwhile I have 3 old realtime editable Yamaha Portasound synths (PSS-380, PSS-680 and PSR-36) fool around with plus a TX7, which I don't even get connected to some editing software (guess I need to update the OS or so). What I want to say is: thank you for your great videos! You rule!

Old Amiga games, Megadrive and even SNES stuff. And those glacial sounds......so much sentimental stuff in this unit, if you grew up in the 80s and 90s, and to able to use an Arpeggiator with it? Too good. Love it. Keep up the good work, Cuckoo, thanks mate.

    @29:24 you don't have to save automation to get patch changes to stick. That's what the Save/Export button is for.

    Im thinking of buying two or multiple fms instead of diferent synths , to get round only 3 notes , that way you could have 6,or 9 notes depending on how many fms , clone them. & Thats how sound works

    I'm late to the party, but both this video and your one on FM/PM modulation were super informative. My Volca FM should arrive tomorrow and with all the possibility you've demonstrated, I'm super excited!

    Had a DX100 back in the day... Loved it, worked nicely with the Korg Poly 800 I had... THEN I got a CZ-5000 and realised how much fun multi timbral synths could be.
    Truthfully, I miss the poly the most.
    However, the CZ envelope section was ludicrous... Made a patch that took almost 5 minutes to go through all the envelope changes...
    Synths man.
    Gotta love em.
    Liking the FM box... Thinking about it as a source to make drum sounds, always felt FMs inherently "clangy" tone IS VERY suited to percussion tones

    Just wanted to say thanks for this. You know what you're talking about, you're very watchable and have a great manner. I now know stuff about the Volca FM I would never have got from the (very limited) instruction sheet. So keep up the fantastic work - you're great.

    Thank you,
    i just bought the Korg Volca FM and had trouble activating the Mod function for the Amp filter, not the pitch.
    And then to be able to do that to 3 or even 5 points within one sound really opened up many possibilities for me.
    I like the Edit layout structure of the Volca FM now even better after your tutorial.

    great video.. one thing I would add is you can switch it to mono from poly to avoid hitting more than one note at a time if you want..

    You are so amazing for taking the time to show us all this in this amount of depth. Definitely buying this as I want to get into fm more. I didn't realize how in depth this synth was, it's so much easier to to program than I thought, even though I have more to learn. This is by far my favorite volca now, and way more fuller than the others.

    hehehehe, "Let's save this. Dusschhch" Love the vocal sound effects for working your synth! I'm sitting here in the future, awaiting the delivery of my first hardware synth, eagerly digesting lessons on how to use it. Lovely stuff my good Cuckoo!

    Great info Cuckoo! Came back to watch it all again as there is so much in the VolcaFM that its easy to not use it all and miss some parts over time. Thanks a lot for the in depth video and nice pace to it all. Cheers
