Although most of the students will have forgotten most of the physics after 10 years, i am sure that they will never forget your enthusiasm and you love to physics, your lectures have changed them in a fundamental way! If they take Physics, i'm sure they will remember every detail in your lectures forever! Thank you for your lecture Walter Lewin!

Thanks professor for providing best education through internet at free of cost.
I live in rural area of India where condition of education is not good, i started educating myself through books and videos lectures , and your videos has made great contribution in my education.
Next year I'll give SAT and hoping for getting into some prestigious University and one day I'll meet you.

Thank you for the lectures! I very much enjoyed your performances as I went through the course these past few months. I looked forward to sitting down and watching your lectures and then talking to all my friends about what I was learning.
You have rekindled my feeling of childhood excitement for learning in a way I thought not possible before. That is a gift only the talented, passionate, and caring can give.
    Thank you again

Thank you, Professor Lewin, for everything ...your enthusiasm, your spectacular way of teaching, and countless other quirks your teaching mechanism brings. I find myself moving backwards in technology (embracing the vacuum tube rather than the transistor) and these lectures on classical aspects (if that is the best way of putting it) are indispensable. Thank you very much.

Great last lecture for 8.02. I wish you had been there for me in 1970. It's good to be able to have Maxwell's equations refreshed for me. I think one has a different perspective when you are 69 compared to 18. My professor didn't teach us about rainbows. I'm looking forward to watching 8.03, a course I never took. Thank you for spending those 60-80 hours per lecture to create this series. I do love physics.

I subscribe to all the kind words about you, Professor. Thank you for your work. At the same time I want to ask you a question. In my country, in universities the salary for teaching, lecturing is 10-20 times smaller than for research work. That is why lecturers are not keen on giving interesting "spectacular" lectures, I think. What is your own opinion about salary ratio?

You mentioned that in the X-ray emitting binary systems, one of the members can be a black hole. I had read that in our frame, we don't see infalling matter ever reach a black hole. If that is the case, then how would there be the hot-spots and x-ray emissions from a black hole binary?

    • @lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259
      @lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      >>>we don't see infalling matter ever reach a black hole>>>
We do not see it go through the event horizon due to time dilation. But we will see X-rays which are emitted outside the event horizon.

    Dear Sir,
I have now watched each of your 8.01 and 8.02 lectures, and some of your 8.03 lectures. I have so many clear pictures in my mind because of you, I know how to begin contemplating phenomena from first principles...and I know what you mean by "see through the equations", because now when I solve problems and exams I am seeing through them, solving problems feels natural like breathing. Thank you! Do you have recommendations for lectures on more advanced topics, like electrodynamics, thermodynamics, or quantum mechanics? I like to learn for myself, if you have recommendations for any sort of book or course lecturer. Grateful to you for giving me this chance.

Final exam 8.02 question number 2 part i: Shouldn't the magnetic field be B=u0*I/2pia^2? The current density is uniform, so the penetrating current can't be zero as the solutions say. The current density is uniform, so the current passing through any point inside the inner wire should be (r^2/a^2)*I.

which exam? I gave 3 exams.

The final exam. First part of the second question. Why is B = 0. I think it should be B=u0*I/2pia^2

      read the solutions - Ampere's Law I_piercing surface = 0.

But how is I_pierce = 0. If the current is distributed evenly throughout the wire, shouldn't it be the fraction of the current that pierces the surface, (r^2/a^2)*I_pierce?

The currents run in the direction parallel to the axes of the cylinders.
Thus the B-fields MUST be circular around the axes of reasons of symmetry. Use a flat surface with any radius < a around the inner axis, No current is penetrating that surface thus, according to Ampere's Law the B-field is zero. If you choose a flat surface with radius 2a centered on the inner axis, a current I is penetrating that surface. Thus the closed loop integral of B dot dl is then mu*I/2pi*2a. I arbitrarily chose the current in the inner cylinder +.
      I hope this helps.

Your comments on Von Braun is stupid and out of context, nothing to do with your lecture. Von Braun was a genius and do more for USA than you ever did

yes he did much more for Hitler and for the US than I did and more than 20,000 slave laborers (mostly jews) died in Penemünde under his leadership. He was a war criminal. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wernher_von_Braun
