  • Here is a video showing the process for how I check and set my valves clearances (also known as setting the tappets). I use a stock setting of .006" or .15mm. Please note this is for stock aircooled VW engines, and does not include Type 4 engines with hydraulic valves.
    Please leave a comment and I'll see you in the next one!

    Here's a time saver for everybody. Remove BOTH valve covers. Once cylinder #1 is at TDC, adjust both the intake and exhaust valves, then proceed to adjust the INTAKE on #2 cylinder, and then adjust the EXHAUST on #4 cylinder. Now, turn the engine pulley a complete rotation, lining up the TDC mark on the pulley again on the engine case split. Check that the rotor is now pointing at cylinder #3, then adjust both #3 valves, then adjust the INTAKE on #4, and then adjust the EXHAUST on #2. You are welcome. Be sure to adjust the valves to the gap that is recommended according to the specific engine you have. Not every engine uses the same gaps used in this video.

    Does it matter what way you spin the crank as long as you land centered up with the correct cylinder?

    .006 = noisy valve train.
    This is how dinosaurs do it.
    .002. Cold, or zero when hot.

    I’m new at this but .. are there cracks around both bosses in the head on both sides where the rocker shafts are bolted? I suppose these could be casting marks but they look peculiar.

    Thankyou. Very helpful. What is the reason for turning counterclockwise? I thought my kombi was clockwise T2(Type 4). 🤔

    • @VWClassicFix
      @VWClassicFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question. This is because the engine turns clockwise normally, with a firing order of 1-4-3-2. By turning the engine anti-clockwise (1-2-3-4) you can start at #1 and set #2 (in the same head) and then move on to the other head. That’s the method I was taught anyway 😀 cheers!

      @@VWClassicFix Ahh Yes!. I see what you mean. Like a short cut instead of having to jump to the other head. Thanks VW Classic, I'll give it go. :)

      That’s it! Saves you jumping from one head to the other :) cheers!

      @@VWClassicFix Thanks! I needed it. My type 4 seems to have a big fat heat ex-changer just below the tappet cover. Giving less space to work with. 😅 Now to just get that judgement of "Magnetic feel" you mentioned right. Feeling slight little bit of bite I imagine.
