  • The boy from Yakutia was early determined to pursue his solo career with the tenacity of the Siberian. This film shows how he manages the leap from his icy homeland to Moscow and finally to Switzerland. Coal is mined in Sergey Tanin's homeland, in winter you drive your car across frozen rivers, frosty hands are more commonplace than virtuoso fingers. But his goal of a career as a pianist was already set when he was a child. Sergey learned to hold his own as a child at the music boarding school, far from his parents, as a young adult at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, now in Switzerland, where the 23 years old Sergey triumphed at the most famous Concours Géza Anda in 2018. Helen Stehli Pfister's film "Sergey Tanin - the Pianist from Siberia" is the long-term observation of a highly gifted artist who, between homesickness for Siberia and gratitude for his further training in Switzerland, continues to develop his artistic personality.

Very interesting story! Thank you for introducing this young guy from Russia. I was smirking and laughing on the comments, the so called piano "professors" in Basel expressed. They know exactly that musicians who visited any Russian conservatory ( like Moscow, St. Petersburg) are simply the very best worldwide- besides the students of the Juliard School. There's nothing this teachers in Switzerland can show him or can teach him. He playes way better than they ever could. And they are aware of this fact. Horowitz, Ashkenazy, Gilles, Richter or the 1974 first prize winner, maestro Andrei Gavrivlov ( International Tschaikowsky Competition Moscow ) came from Russia....I appreciate this young guy playing also composers like Jean Phillipe Rameau besides Liszt b-minor sonata or Mozart.

Dear Sergey Tanin: never answer any political questions. You studied music, not politics. (Netherlands)
