You do get Premier Access and several gold perks. But in terms of free upgrades to premium economy, no. The feature I like is that as gold with a foreign carrier is the use of United Club, even if flying United Domestic. I've used United Club on a flight from LAX to Vegas for example.
I was told at LAX that I could only use the club with an international itinerary. My flight from LAX to PHX of course did not fit that criteria and I'm bummed about this rule. I thought with gold that you do get lounge access!
It's a bit confusing. If you have Star Alliance Gold with a different Star Alliance airline, like Air Canada or Asiana, you can use the United Club even on a domestic only leg. If the status is with United, Mileage Premier Gold and above, then only international itineraries. FYI: I have status with Asiana.
Very accurate account of Star Alliance Gold. Unless you get one of the newer narrowbodies with PTVs, it can def get a bit grungy. I think the airline has nice crews but definitely need to freshen up certain aspects of their service. Another perk, being rebooked on another flight and having access to the Premier Lines to change flights. I felt like i hacked the system when my original discounted United Flight got switched after getting rebooked several times to other flights due to being late with my original flight and getting full fare economy tickets and a longer detour to my destination. I ended up getting 125% points at a fraction of the cost 😂
I agree with you on the first part of your comment. If I have the flexibility, I might see what it's like to switch flights. United is ok. They treat alliance Gold better than Copa. Thanks for sharing and watching!
Does your star alliance gold status give you gold perks when you book a united flight? (Or through the united portal?)
