Probably the best Washington book I've read, or any biography I've read on any American in U.S. history. Props to Mr. Chernow for writing this amazing account of a man who's just known now for being the first president or another name, but is one of the most consequential men in U.S. history. I think Americans need to read this book, which is an awesome account of arguably the greatest general, Father, and President of our nation's story.
Nicholas Abbs agree! The only difference is the weight of their accomplishments. Both are equally well written and genius but I liked the Washington book better only because it's Washington!
Just finished his Washington biography for the second time. It's phenomenal. A great resource for learning about George Washington the man, and not the legend.
I've recently read and much enjoyed the GW biography. Chernow guides the reader through the history Washington lived and also Washington's strengths, failings, and even insecurities as a person. If I have one criticism, however, it is that Chernow often makes what seem to me to be some questionable assumptions about the workings of Washington's mind itself.
Of his undergraduate experience at Yale University, he is described as having graduated Summa Cum Laude. Here I had always thought that, in a private university, one graduates Magna Cum Laude. Am I accurate?
But Washington did have original thinking as to battle tactics, and as to precepts or norms of the Presidency. So Chernow is wrong regarding the ‘creative thought’ scenario with Washington.
There is no such thing as an original thinker yet there are independent thinkers the fonder fathers well so well grounded in the thought of the enlightenment.......
This guy is in his own way is a National treasure. Truly brilliant. I have never seen anyone bring American Historical figures to life like him.
He can tell a great story.
@Yes. And I treasure his biography of Hamilton.

have you read his biography on hamilton? I'm about 100 pages in on Washington, but Hamilton absolutely blew my away
DJT I'm reading it now...Incredible book!

Check out Grant by Chernow. :-)
This is very good book. Joseph Ellis also wrote an amazing book called “His Excellency.” Chernow’s Hamilton is amazing of course.
Honestly, this is a great interview. Props to Ron for a string of great observations and answers, and thanks for making it available.

jmkeller I’m reading it for a second time too
I need to read it a second time too. So much in there it’s hard to pick it all up on one read
Chernow’s Washington is THE definitive biography of our nations founder. Incredible book.
I liked his Grant book. I might read this.
Thank You Sir! Studied your fine Work and then permitted a Friend to borrow it. Must have respected your work too Sir! Have not seen the Book since!!!
Nice interview! Fun to just hear Chernow talk, he sounds very smart and articulate.
@And so does Stanford's Victor Davis Hanson!
LOOK AT THAT BADASS MODERN LIBRARY PAPERBACK COLLECTION
How hard was it to fit his (George Washington’s) life story into as many chapters which was the number of years in his life? Was this deliberate?

I've listened to the audio book multiple times and it's without question of my favorites of all time.

@@jayyoung4534 wtf are you taking about
Has such an interview been done with the late Dr. Ira Berlin, University of Maryland? Both scholars are so complete with historical detail.
Is there more?!?!??!
George Washington was not born in the upper crust but worked his way up
I'm 15 minutes into this and all he talks about is Hamilton. Washington always gets the short end of the stick

Would that the author of the 1619 Project could sit and learn from a man like this...you know, someone who actually studied American history!
The author of the 1619 project would first have need of honest scholarship.
Would love to see a Jefferson book too!
There are recent biographies of Jefferson. I have Meacham's.
