- Destiny 2's Lore and Story from Heresy has brought us new insights on one of Destiny's greatest pieces of lore. The Tablet of Ruin from the Dreadnought contains another message from The Winnower, including confirmation that the Winnower is the one who speaks Oryx in the Books of Sorrow. The true lord of Darkness is here at last.

I think it's both of these options, but also neither. I think the Winnower is telling us to destroy these barriers between its way, and us. Whether it be an old foe or new.

The Winnower is daring us to kill the newest enemy, but it also seemingly knows that no one else is in our ear at this moment. Ikora has given us the absolute freedom to do whatever we need to do. The Witness is dead, Savathun and Xivu Arath are fighting. We are totally alone.
The last time the Guardian had this kind of freedom to go total scorched earth, Prince Uldren died, and if the Winnower has been as ‘acquainted’ with us as it claims, it knows that too.
We are on the precipice of acquiring deeper, darker power, staring into a Tablet Of Ruin. If people were worried about us using Stasis, this might be even worse. Because we have no one holding us back. Drifter isn’t in the state to do so, Elsie isn’t here, and Sloan is the one guiding us.
The guardian has been the final shape of the universe since the beginning of destiny.
With Sloane being the one to guide us, there's an exceedingly high chance this power gets utilized and weaponized to a much greater degree than what Eris, Elsie, or even the Drifter would advise. If there was ever a moment in Destiny where we're on the precipice of proving the Winnower's logic correct, it's now.
Of course, the Winnower knows about Uldren's death at our hands, but we can't just kill a COSMIC force. If The Final Shape taught us anything, it's that these powers are nothing to fear. Darkness isn't inherently "evil". Nor is Light inherently "good". Both are tools. Tools that allow their wielders to do incredible things. The Winnower won't die at our hands. If we DO kill it, we'll be throwing the UNIVERSE into the sun. There will be nothing but Light, and remember, Light can burn you if you're not careful.

@@lordpumpkinhead265 The problem is that Sloane knows that her time is limited. One of the lore tabs this season talks about how while she knows she can hang on for now, nothing is invincible. She constantly feels the tug and call of the Taken, and how much longer can she really hold it at bay with self reassurance?
I love getting stoned and exploring destiny lore. I used to love it before getting stoned but i find this is a little enhancer of immersion lol

Idk if anyone’s brought it up but in the anchor section of the intro mission, a dire taken goblin is kneeling before a shrine with a Toland wisp and when you approach it, it goes away. The first text from the tablet of ruin seems like the winnower is talking to someone but maybe not to us. Toland guides us to chests that are hidden on the dreadnaught
Theory: Toland is working in tandem with the winnower leading us down the path of resolve, in an attempt to “take” Eris’ throne world from her, and establish himself as the new taken king

This is what Destiny needed. A being older and more powerful than we can fathom, daring us. Proper Eldritch horror vibes, and I genuinely hope the end of this season has a lasting impact on us as guardians. Not just another toy to play with, but paying the price of learning something far more dangerous than Strand or Stasis. And knowing the stakes, we would pay that price, gladly.
Thw winnower is the darkness itself not a being
I got chills reading the lore for the seasonal artifact. Made my skin crawl. To think, the Winnower has probably been watching us, since the first man made fire, the first murder by a human. He saw our Golden Age, our fall in the Collapse, and his other half, the Gardner, raise another civilization , and her Guardians, as the vessels to prove her Logic was right vs his. They are like two players on either side of a chess board. That game’s changed now, and the Winnower is no less discouraged. He thinks he’ll still win, and be proven right. As for characters like Savathun, I believe, the Queen on the board wants to either kill both players on either side of it, or leave the chessboard entirely.
I wonder if the Witness was just like the Winnower’s way of saying “here’s my move, Gardener. Let’s see if you can handle it.” And as we know, we got REALLY close to losing the entire war in the Salvation’s Edge raid.
I’m guessing maybe the Winnower is reaching out now as a reaction to our efforts, maybe deciding that we’re now worthy of being properly introduced to. Hence why I believe at the end of Heresy, the Winnower will directly appear and make themself known one way or another.
@ If the Winnower exists, what of the Gardner? Will she reveal herself? Will she even speak to us? If the Flower Game were to end in both the Gardner and Winnower’s deaths, what future does it look like, when anyone can now define their destiny? No longer pawns on the board. I believe Light and Darkness would remain, but the entities behind the Light and Darkness, would cease to be. No longer would we be pawns in their game.

In one mighty swipe, the Vex cut the Exo down. The woman sighed as Saint crumpled to the ground.
Silence fell, followed by the crunching of footsteps in the snow. "Just like your father," she said, kneeling by his head. "All of you."

Eris says in the trailer to "reach into the unknown and prepare for it to reach back." What if, in a way, we unintentionally commune with the winnower in more ways than just the tablets of ruin
In the Herasy concept arts we can see a portal in one of the anchor looking objects so what if find or obtain the echo this portal blasts open and we get more cryptic messages from the winnower

I’ve been waiting for this video ever since I saw the Winnower being quoted in the Tablets of Ruins artifact.
What if ... Sloane is being controlled/manipulated by the Winnower? She could've stolen the tablet and placed it in the Dreadnought for us to find, and then feign ignorance while she teaches us to use Taken power? She is placed in the ideal position to accomplish all of this, and then, as a final test, the Winnower would have us Take her. It would be the first time that a guardian has been fully taken, and a fitting heresy to end the episode (a light bearer taking another light bearer).

The wording when we found the one on the Dreadnaught made me think it was a separate one from the one we found in Savathun’s throne world. Makes events play out better when we get our artifact from Eris’ place since she would be the most likely one to be in possession of it after the events of Witch Queen.
I'm calling it now, Savathun has been playing us the whole time.
Savathun definitely had a hand in leaving the tablet of ruin on the dreadnaught. After the events of the final shape she vanished on periodically in the pale heart to continue to test us. Now that her brothers flag ship has returned she would no doubt would have guessed we would’ve gone to investigate. She probably got a hold of the tablet after we used it to show the memory in her throne world and now this is most likely part of a scheme involved somehow. The hive that are on the dreadnaught are fighting against the taken and they are the scarlet keep brood as well which was under savathuns command on the moon. She’s definitely up to something but to what end it’s definitely involving us getting vengeance for eris and mastering the power of taken. Perhaps even gaining the throne of the taken king
One tidbit that’s interesting to me is that drifter explains when you kill a taken they don’t die they just respawn in the ascendant plane which basically makes them daemons from 40k. But that means the named taken we killed so far in D1 and D2 are somewhere in the ascendant plane just standing around doing nothing.
I wonder if those Taken are now friendly, like how after Scott defeats a member of the League of Evil Exes from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
Just something that I discovered, when you stand inside the Taken fla,es of an anchor, like the ones on the edge of the Dreadnaught, you get the same Suffocating Terror debuff as if an eye sees you. the debuff stacks to 20 and then there is a unique animation before you die.
As soon as I saw the Scarlet Swarm actively fighting the Taken I became extremely curious about the situation, because they're supposed to be what's left of Crota and Oryx's brood having aligned themselves with Xivu. There's been a massive change in who is in charge aboard the Dreadnaught, and Xivu's forces did not get the memo lol
Whenever we get our throne world in the future, i hope bungo uses it as fully customizable player housing.

I also find it interesting that the flavor text of the tablet has the quote slightly wrong. In the Books of Sorrow XXXII entry, that quote actually reads as: “The world is not built on the laws the love… Not on peace, but on victory by any means.” Just a little curious to me
I like the idea of there being 2 groups of dread, the ones in the pale heart still following the witnesses last orders. And now some dread that might be following the winnower.

I think our guardian is slipping into dangerous waters
It seems that the Winnower likes to appear during moments when our Guardian isn’t being watched, or held back.
The first time was when we went off to slay Uldren, the second time being right after slaying the Witness where it made contact with us, and now this third time, where we are alone, staring into a tablet of ruin.

We haven’t heard from the Nine in a very long time, and their motives are anomalous as ever. We know that they depend on our survival for their survival, or something like that, but they’re deeply divided.
I have absolutely no clue how they could be related to the story here, unless they have some kinda relation with the Winnower or the Echoes or something.

the lore this season has been top notch, Xivu, savathun and oryx the krill trio from fundament and one of the best story threads in all of destiny.

I hope the winnowed doesn’t become the next be bad, but like an ocean becomes a force we must content with. Neither evil nor good, and only playing the game.
This has been one of my favorite lore text in a while. It does a great job of triggering the "what are we walking into" response in just so little words. I found the "Then kill it. I dare you" portion to be the most intriguing because it can just be taken so many ways. Is the winnower just daring us to continue to kill because that simply shows that their logic is correct? Is it speaking about the subjugator because the power we would obtain while aiming towards that goal would lead us closer to the winnower? Or is it like the way I took it, that they are daring us to kill our ghost because according to the winnower this will only end one way.
Either way this lore was great. I love that the Winnower reaches out to us during times like this where we are basically alone in our methods of how we handle things and just whispers into our ear like a devil on our shoulder taunting us but also making jokes. I'm looking forward to seeing the direction the lore takes us in this episode.

Savathun OBVIOUSLY has a hand/a part to play in this but remember, the Winnower ISN'T malicious or "bad" in any way. All of the lore tabs we've read from him so far have made him sound like a really laid-back dude. He's not bad, he's just playing the game with the Gardener and making sure only the strongest forms of life survive. There's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing inherently "evil" or malicious about the Winnower. He's just playing his part in all this.
Of course the cosmic entity doesnt really see a problem with the suffering of living being so far beneath it which causes problems for us in the vanguard lol

I like this take but I think Bungie are going to position the Winnower as the next big villain instead of as a cosmic force that is trying to serve its own interests, much like the Traveler.
@ That wouldn't make any sense, though. Even in game, up to this point, both the Gardener and the Winnower have be THE cosmic gods of the Destiny Universe. The creators of the universe and the creators of both Light and Dark, and even up to TFS all the lore suggested that if we were to kill one or the other, the universe would be out of balance and would essentially die. So it wouldn't make any sort of sense for them to suddenly turn the Winnower into something that we can hurt.

Someone better update the destiny wiki with all this new info, we still got it saying the Veil is the Winnower, and that Oryx spoke to the Witness in the Deep
There's no proof that the Winnower is separate from the Veil, & it's possible that Oryx interacted with both Winnower & Witness

Oryx spoke to both the Witness and the Winnower.
The witness was the first time he communed with the deep and learned the ability to take. The winnower was the second time, after it reached out to him wanting to talk.

dunno if anyone caught this but the corrupted boons in nether are actually a representation of taken energy n how it provides strength but reveals weaknesses..... taken dont become perfect but rather their edges are sharpened and youll notice the boons grant you a sharper edge but it brings out a greater weakness like deal more damage but take more damage....it doesn't tell you that the dmg you take is vastly greater than the damage buff youre granted..... Sloane talks about this in the mission on the dreaming city..... sloane warns you to be weary of the boons granted by the taken energy bc they come with a cost .... 🎉❤

I might be in the minority but I'm actually really excited and liking that there is not much old lore to point at to explain what's going on. I feel like for forever you might not be able to see how we would get there, but you knew where each story beat was headed. This is much more open ended and I love it

The Winnower has been using the gardeners' civilizations to prove its own logic this entire time.
Something I've noticed is the fact throughout these episodes is showing how the enemies have evolved.
A subsection Vex becoming individualistic, the Scorn no longer becoming necessarily undead, and now the Taken are more rigid. Even now, any Fallen left for us to defeat are now corrupted within Vespers Host.
I think we're looking at the new main three enemies we will be facing from here on out. Dread, Vex, Taken, and Scorn.
The Winnower is amassing the army, or rather happily watching how the game is changing to its favor.
What if in frontiers and beyond a new main antagonist faction will created by the winnower or the leader of the faction will be compose of dread vex taken and scorn and the leader of that faction will be the main antagonist of the new saga and is the worshiper and follower of the winnower

Since The Guardian was revived after being dead for a long time on earth, I could see a potential plot twist where pre-light we were somehow aligned with the Winnower, since it addresses us as a friend. Or perhaps a cycle where we are the balance between the two paracausal powers, doomed to repeat the same events over and over just with new players on the board.
This just makes me think that the whole Destiny Universe IS the flower game and that The Traveller and the Winnower are still playing in their respective true forms somewhere.
The Pelorus Ghost Shell from this episode has a lore tab where Savathun and Immaru are talking about something he just got back from doing and “fooling a bunch of chumps.” Curious if they had something to do with the Tablet showing up where it did🤷♂️ anywho, great vid!!
Those lines from the Winnower are in quotes. They are calls and responses, but we're only seeing its side of a two-way communication. The other half, the one in the gaps? I think it's us.
An item in this episodes battle pass has a lore tab that depicts Immaru and Savathun talking and Savathun asks how he “was able to pull it off?” In which he response about “how easy it is to trick fool” ( I’m very much paraphrasing as I don’t have the lore tab in front of me). So I think Immaru planted the Tablet of Ruin on the Dreadnaught.
There is more lore about the winower within the physical grimoire anthology book 7 Penumbra. At least I haven't seen it in game and you never covert it in videos about the winower befor, but in this book there is definitely lore about the same being that talkt to oryx.
Listening to that lore tab, I am suddenly reminded of the Dual Destiny mission. I think that mission was a test; a test for Savathun to see if we would be suitable to be HER knife against the Winnower. By sparing your foe at the end of the mission despite Savathun telling you to kill them, we prove that we are not so easily influenced by the logic of the Winnower, and so we pass her test; she knows she can trust us not to side with the Winnower.
TLDR: I think we're being set up to be Savathun's Knife against the Winnower, just as the Witness was the Winnower's Knife against the Traveller.
I noticed the Hive and Taken fighting. My jaw dropped, and I pointed out to my buddy who was with me and is a more recent arrival just how perverse that was. I don't think he quite grokked it.
So now that we know for a fact that the Winnower exists, but what about the Gardener? It has to exist as well, but where is it? Why has it never communicated with us? Or has it? This all makes me wonder if the Gardener is what was screaming inside the Traveler when the Witness cut it open. If so, then the Gardener cannot speak in a normal manner and has indeed communicated with us before.
I guess we don’t really know what form if any the Winnower and Gardener have in our (the game’s) universe. While we’ve had both communications from the Nacre ship lore and the Tablet lore, maybe I am mistaken but I don’t think we’ve actually received these messages. Or at the very least, it hasn’t been acknowledged that we have. Almost more like the Winnower is watching us and commenting on our actions. So is their influence limited through the Traveler and Veil or completely separate from the two?
I do like the symmetry of how it’s been so far. The Veil has communicated with the Witness and Maya but it doesn’t seem to take any action itself compared to the Traveler who has a reputation of saying nothing and traveling the universe doing all sorts of things. The same can be said of the Winnower talking to Oryx and us, and the Gardener being basically absent as of now.
Traveler is proof that the Gardener exist. It is the Gardener’s physical manifestation in the material universe.
Reminds of a Question posed by Code Geass
It went something like
What do you do when there is an evil you cannot defeat by just means? Do you stain your hands with evil to destroy evil? Or do you remain steadfastly just and righteous even if it means surrendering to evil?"
And by extension regardless of what you choose Evil remains in the world...
Worst part too Lelouch Willingly chose the former, and when realizing it would never create the world he wanted, tried to end the cycle by making himself the enemy of all, and then sacrificed himself perish at the hands of their hero...
Only for later stories to show the world did change... But Evil still remained ...

Would be amazing if this wasn't just the introduction to a new Darkness subclass, but one more primal than the Witness's resonance, something that lets us kill, sharpen ourselves, embody the knife. A power so dark, it embodies annihilation both physically and metaphysically.
I think that Savvy is training us to be better. When I played the two queens mission, she sounded more like a sparring partner.. like a coach
Something about how the Winnower Speak and its speech pattern is…… interesting. It always speaks like an old friend. Its greatest champion lowkey too
I’ll never get over the difference between the Winnower and Traveler. One talks to us like it knows us, like we’re old pals meeting back up after being separated. The other is enigmatic, vague and mute. Speaking in visions and riddles. And yet that familiarity is false. It isn’t real. The Traveler however is truth. It wants to help us, it wants to see us grow. It really does care, in its own different way.
I don't think the Winnower is directly controlling the Taken/Dread. For now at least acting so directly doesn't fit its MO. It's always maintained absolute confidence that it's way, the way of the Sword Logic, is right. It doesn't feel the need to act so directly because it's sure that the universe will end the same way no matter what happens. That's why there aren't any whispers or corrupting influence coming from the Tablet of Ruin. Why would it need to try and control us forcibly if it was sure it would get its way anyway?
I always assumed the things from savathun's throne world werent the "real" versions of those things, just kinda a metaphysical copy that was created by her innate psyche when she created the throne world and after being reborn in light.

Oryx didn't learn how to take from the Witnesses. He learned it from the Darkness itself.

It feels like the winnower is an all-powerful being giving out power to anyone strong enough to weild it. It doesn't care what we do. It just wants a good show!

It would be so epic if we get a cutscene at the end of Heresy where the Winnower take possession of maybe the Resonant Knife and speaks to us directly like it did to Oryx.
Resonant Knife is a title that evokes a certain line of thinking in the Destiny universe, considering that by all accounts as far as Im aware that pure Darkness is often also called resonance. So the resonant knife could mean the dark knife, a entity whose power comes from the purest Darkness, a deeper understanding than even the Witness knew of considering it could not initially wield Strand, and also because it required the Light to fulfill its goals. This may also end up a some point leading to us finally learning at least of the 3rd Darkness subclass, achieving a complete understanding of Darkness. Yes we wield Prismatic which is the blending of Light and Dark, but there is often a great difference between using something, and understanding it. We didnt learn to use Prismatic of our own accord, it was laid out in front of us by the Traveler to use as a tool, perhaps there is still more of the Darkness to discover before we completely master it.
Let's not forget there is still at least one more Disciple out there. The one referenced in "The Cave". Maybe they wield the Resonant Knife
I mean this with utmost sincerity. I hope that if the Winnower ever gets a voiced role, then Bungie will call up Byf to do it because he reads these lines soooo f*cking well
If we ever hear it speak, I really want The Winnower to be voiced by James Spader. I always hear those lore tabs in his voice
It'd be interesting if The Winnower is actually our ally (or enemy with a common goal). Cause do note, The Gardener wanted an alternate end to the Flower Game. That is what the Witness attempted to achieve. Would be surprising if after contacting the Winnower, that the Gardener is a far worse god.

Anyone curious why the tablets themselves are written to us, but have existed well before our guardian. Is these were written by the winnower to us, oryx would have had these tablets, who would have known that a lightbearer would be reading it. Which is…. Strange.
That lines up with the Touch of Malice plan, I think. Oryx lives on through the weapon, which he knew would be wielded by us.
The lore tab isn't necessarily a translation of what Oryx inscribed on the tablet. Lots of exotic guns and armors have lore tabs and have no visible writing on them
am i crazy or does the conversation between the winnower and lightbearer remind me of the scene where zavala aimed his gun at his ghost especially the point where it says "kill it, i dare you"
Byf did u see the Art for Act 3. The Picture. At the top it seems to be an Subjugator with circles around his chest and "swords" around his back? He is standing on a platform or something.and in his chest it kinda look like the Echo? That picture is something to look into. Looks terrifying.and i think when u hop into Hall of Souls there is a Taken Subjugator with the name of like Shades of Kel something. That rng spawns. That may be the name of the Subjugator that stabbed Eris?
Crazy theory about us getting the tablet: If Savathun planted it for us to get the power of taking it could be to bring back Oryx, just like how Oryx originally brought Savathun and Xivu back by doing a form of trickery(Savathun) and war(Xivu).

I take a short break from destiny come back second thing I learn is the Winnower has entered the chat.... I was gone for a month.
I’m soo damn excited for the entrance of the winnower, but giving that the next saga is a multi year one, similar to the witness we will not see the winnower anytime time soon, at least not for the next 4 or so years.
Once we retrieve the power of taking, will that be a new darkness subclass? I was always so annoyed that darkness only got 2 subclasses, Stasis and Strand

Maybe this is a prototype? Could get it in Frontiers. Would be nice to finally have a 3rd Darkness subclass - but I won't get my hopes up

Final shape mission that takes place on the lunar pyramud said eris was investigating the power of nightmares so my guess is that itll be that. As well as the red subclass "leaks", which we don't know if they were real but bungie never came out and said they were fake and kept the taking down of the pictures very hush hush. So imo its pointing to that.
Id still love to have the concept ahamkara subclass though
This leaves me with a few questions. What of the Gardener? If the Winnower is confirmed a real entity, what about the Gardener? Did something happen to them? And what of the Nine and their goals?
The gardener from what we know just doesnt want to play the winnowers game. It wants out entirely
