In reference to the creepiness of ventriloquist dummies: in the early versions of Toy Story, Woody was a ventriloquist dummy. Which does make the name make a little more sense. He was changed into a pull-string cowboy after focus testing when they found that (shockingly) ventriloquist dummy Woody was creepy and scared children.

Ironically, it was Toy Story that helped fuel my fear of dolls and made me scared of some of my other toys. Somehow, Toy Story translated in my head to a fear that my toys would come to life and kill me. To this day, I still don't like dolls. It's the blank, staring eyes mostly. So I can't blame kids for being afraid of vintrilloquist dummy Woody.
You mean like the reaction in the first movie where he came to life on the Bully and scared the heck out of him with the other mismatched deranged toys.

I work at a preschool for kids with special needs. One boy got off the bus with a Huggy Wuggy doll, it was absolutely terrifying and I have no idea WHY his parents would buy a thing like that. It scared most of the other kids and even creeped out the teacher.
I have a friend who works at a preschool, and her class had a brief fixation on Huggy Wuggy too: videos, dolls, even playing make-believe. I think someone eventually had a word with the parents and gently informed them that Poppy Playtime isn't remotely suitable for kindergarteners, even if it looks bright and colourful on TH-cam.

They straight up sell unlicensed plushes of Huggy Wuggy at these random stores that I occasionally run into. It’s stupid easy to find them and buy them. I don’t think kids should even be NEAR that game.
Yeah I literally don't understand why Poppy Playtime is being marketed toward kids... It's not for kids regardless of the seemingly cute characters in it. Then parents get mad... Like pay attention to your kids, it's a horror game, it's not for children.

The ancient doll from Stardew, not only is just a disturbing looking thing to find in a rather lighthearted game, if you're enough of a monster to abandon your child via magic, one appears on the TV and goes on about being free before crawling out of the television.

As a lifelong doll hater, this was a great audio file, while I looked anywhere but the TV. I'm sure the video editing is top quality, but I will never know.

No, I’ve got some Nirnroot to collect, crafting ingredients to find, Deathclaw meat to put on a BBQ, and some posters to pull off the wall to annoy a dictator. Then I need to catch some fish, build a house and track down a snitch for the mob… it’s a busy day, but I will get round to closing the Oblivion Gates, killing the head dragon and launching that important mission into space… honest!
Priority: Cerberus Headquarters from Mass Effect 3 in a nutshell. Really need to help out Aria and her Omega, do some detective work and recruit some Reaper ancestors, AND bond with my squadmates first whilst beating some rogue Alliance washouts, a spy, and a dashing clone you know.
Speaking of creepy dolls, Fatal Frame Maiden of Blackwater has some very creepy dolls in the shrine.
When I first saw them I thought, Yup, those are coming after me. It's not if, but when. And sure enough, they did.
I would add Calcabrina from Final Fantasy XIV. Not only is she creepy as a boss you fight, you can get minions of her two halves (Calca and Brina) as well as dolls to put in your character’s home!
And she's one of the hardest boss fights in the game, from what I remember
And she can turn you into a doll, too.
I knew that name sounded familiar, she was also in FFIV, and the only reason she wasn't as creepy is simply due to graphical limitations.
I was about to bring up Calca and Brina before I saw this comment. Then again, I'm one of those girls who thinks the dolls are adorable, especially with their laser eyes.

The cymbal-clanging monkeys in Fallout 4 had a couple creepy appearances, and I seem to recall some creepy kinda-doll-like robots in Nier Automata, but those aren't dolls. I don't really play horror games so have avoided doll-related trauma.
While everyone was hyperfocused on Lady Dimitrescu i was there eagerly anticipating the creepy doll in RE: Village, I will always be proud of that.

I feel like no mention of creepy dolls in video games is complete without including Calcabrina from the Final Fantasy series. Especially their appearance in FFXIV, where a nice, relaxing run through a pretty dungeon suddenly turns into a swarm of 12-foot tall porcelain dolls which then merge into a 30-foot tall naked blobby doll monster that will try to kill you by smashing you with its head.
It really says something about RE8's commitment to freaky sh*t when the dolls in the Beneviento House are NOT the creepiest thing in that place...In fact, after the basement slug-foetus, the dolls are an absolute tonic XD

Lost Doll from Gregory Horror Show. A one person toxic relationship that really makes being trapped in a hotel full of insane monsters a complete pain.
Honourable mention: the twin doll from Fatal Frame 2, horrifying and makes you waste ammo.
What about Mary from Death Mark? A seemingly elegant doll who seems to help you at first until it was later revealed shes actually a psychotic murderer who curse you just for her amusement?
Yes, especially when her face opens up at the end, she looks extremely creepy.

I really love the dolls from the Spirit Hunter series! Mary is a doll of pure malice and Kaguya doesn't want anything but to "play". The dolls cannot be reasoned with and can only be temporarily sealed which is what makes them horrifying.

Definitely need to give mention to Calcabrina in Final Fantasy XIV, boss of the Antitower. They start out as six small dancing dolls named Calca and Brina, but once you trounce them they fusion dance into a giant, super-ripped version of themselves with such wonderful attacks as "don't look at your party member or the big scary doll" "repeated headbutts" and "turn two of your party members into clones of Calca and Brina and force them to fight the remainder."
Those dolls first appeared in Final Fantasy 4 (released as FF2 in the west), and their surprise appearance and boss fight were a very memorable scene. It certainly freaked me out the first time I played it!
Actually the creepiest doll ever is the goddamn "ragdoll physics" that every modern game insists upon having.
Seeing Link's helpless body roll down any number of cliffs will forever haunt my dreams...
I played RE: Village on shrooms. The doll house was by far the scariest part.

Resident Evil Code Veronica has an area with creepy dolls, all of whom are modeled after the game's main antagonist Alexia Ashford.
Dolls are a frequent atmospheric gimmick in parts of RE: Revelations 2, as well. If it's a horror cliche, there's a pretty good chance Resident Evil has dabbled with it before.
A lot of concepts of Village came from the beta prototype of what re4 was like before it drastically changed. Imagine Leon being chased by killer dolls in a mansion.
What's wild is that I have a phobia of both spiders *AND* dolls.
So, if some jerk in game development comes up with a monster/creature that is a combination of those - *OH WAIT!* Mannequin Spider. Then again, THAT was only in the film Silent Hill: Revelation, but... even still, the fact that it exists is a nightmare on its own.
I have both phobias as well as with clowns…. It lovely.

Fallout 3's baby carriage trap is one that gets me. Plays a baby cry sound when you get near, then if you go to investigate it it's just a doll head surrounded by frag mines and it blows up on you. Only used a couple of times, but had me on edge every time I saw a stroller after the first time it happened

Did anyone else get told the story when they were little by one of your friends that at "their cousin's old school" or a far removed equivalent there was a girl who had a doll who she treated badly, the doll got angry and she threw it away but it came back at midnight and stabbed her? I was nice to all my dolls but was still bracing myself at midnight in case I'd accidentally offended one of them!
No but I still get spooked by a horror story I found by Facebook algorithm years ago. It ended with the annoying “Ignore this post and you will die” cliché basically, but I was still naive enough to be spooked
It's really a shame that such a high percentage of dolls in media are so scary. I've heard it makes it difficult for people who actually *like* dolls to find high quality ones, since people will apparently destroy them because of all this. :(

OMG do the puppets from the Threshold Kids show you can find in Control count?????? I was genuinely freaked out by those homemade terrifying puppets. Mr Bones is absolutely horrifying.
Some more terrifying dolls from video games: the Snugglehugs line of toys from Not for Broadcast. Mr Snugglehugs had batteries that exploded in kids' faces, and Mrs. Snugglehugs became sentient and their violent killing spree sent the country into an unending lockdown.
Banette from pokémon. Quote from the pokedex, "Strong feelings of hatred turned a puppet into a Pokémon. If it opens its mouth, its cursed energy escapes." I think this one ticks all the boxes.
The Dolls from Neverending Nightmares might’ve been the ones to punch my card to the “fear of dolls club” especially after seeing them disembowel their main character. Fun times.

The twin dolls from “The Cat Lady” have a brief appearance early on, but they’re horrifying all the same. They definitely deserve a shoutout!
Does Gnome Chomsky count? Carrying him around both Half-Life 2 Episode 1 or 2 and then an entire zombie-infested theme park is definitely one of the more harrowing experiences I’ve had in gaming, even if his little gnome face is admittedly delightful.
I LOVED the rest of the game, but that one little " twin daughters with a tragic background whom I somehow turned into evil dolls " chapter of Fatal Frame 2 really chilled me to the bone back when I first played it. Many replays later, and the Kiryu's dilapidated home is still unsettling.
Fatal Frame 4 has another creepy haunted doll. That series Loves a creepy doll.
I’m not sure about any specific dolls as it’s been a while, but shout out to the Shadow Hearts series. All 3 games have a haunted doll house side quest and they’re all more horror focused segments in the games.

The first level of Dark Deception has you running from the "Murder Monkeys", demons that take the form of giant cymbal-clanging wind-up monkeys.
Frankly surprised that game hasn't given us a level made of actual dolls yet. We've got mannequins on the horizon and murder monkey toys, the thing seems primed for a doll attack.
I think cymbal-banging monkeys are their own category of creepy toys - they could probably get a whole nother video just out of those

There's (for some reason) a fine line between what one calls a toy and doll, but yeah, the Murder Monkeys seemed like they could squeak onto this list, bloodstained fur and all.
Splatterhouse (the remake) contained a level called The Doll That Bled. The boss was a very weird doll that called the hero mama and wore power-armour made out of random junk around the room.
I have the same problem with Dolls that I have with Clowns. I can't take them seriously even in a horror scenario. I still see them as funny toys or collectibles that might need some work to be fixed.
There is also Calcabrina, a giant doll that appears as a boss in Final Fantasy IV and XIV

There's a ps2 horror game called Haunting Ground. In one of the hallways of the giant manor you're in is a couch with a life-sized "doll" that, when you're not looking, will turn its head from looking to the side to facing forward. Further examination of the "doll," you realize it's not a doll but a mummified girl. Still gives me chills thinking about it.
I found Angelic Amber adorable. Felt bad for fighting the poor thing. Wasn’t her fault she was possessed by darkness. On top of that don’t they basically say that when a toy gets possessed by darkness, the toy is broken inside. So basically Angelic Amber died after fighting her. So yeah, pretty grim.
The boss Calcabrina from Final Fantasy XIV. She’s the last boss of the Antitower dungeon in Heavensward. Starts off as some children then jumps scares you in a phase transition. BAM massive creepy doll.
Ellens face from 9:03 onwards is absolutely hilarious
Should give an honorable mention to Medicine Melancholy from the Touhou game Phantasmagoria of Flower View. She's a murderous living doll with the ability to control poison who wants to free all other dolls by killing humans. And the reason why she came to life and gained her powers? It was apparently due to the fact she was discarded in a field of lily of the valley flowers, which are highly poisonous.
Don't forget, she was discarded along with the young owner. There are fan theories that she or Su-san are possessed by that ill fated child.
At least she happy in the flower field , strolling around with Yuuka Kazami
Might I suggest the doll monsters of Final Fantasy 14, they fight while dancing to a circus like tune and can turn YOU into a doll as well.
There's a challenge to defeat Angie under a certain amount of time, but it's difficult since her position is randomised and the time keeps ticking in the cutscenes.
Also it's unfortunate that Calcabrina didn't make the list

Personally, I think Mommy Long-Legs is still scarier than Poppy because the ability to stretch her limbs out to try to catch you, habit of putting you in life-threatening games, her tendency to make spider webs on other toys, and/or seemingly psychotic nature meaning she wants to probably eat you like a spider would. I normally hate creepy dolls and like spiders, yet somehow Mommy Long-legs managed to combine the two to ruin any normally cute pink spiders!!!! Plus, if the poster is right, she has a partner and baby we might end up running into in a future chapter. Hard nope from me on both of those stretchy freaks!!
Poppy may betray you in the end of Chapter Two, but that's standard for not selling evil toys to random families. If you actually sold her to a random family, she'd just leave you alone and torture them instead. If it works on potential possessed Pokemon plushies, a doll will normally do the same thing (and I still can't look at the Pokemon mascot without feeling bad and/or creeped out by default because IRL Pokemon Go without a phone as a retail staff member is something I'm not paid enough to do anyway. Call me a terrible person but the only person that seems to survive Child's Play with minimal bad effects was the guy that sold Chucky, and I took his lead in real life. Always sell the evil toy to a random family because burning evil toys isn't the correct answer to everything.)
Seriously, if you make a part 2, I think the entire Long-Legs family should be on that list by default.

Onimusha for ps 2 had a doll that you could only kill by dying when ever it shows up. Good thing that they had a revival scroll hidden close by.

Final Fantasy XIV Online. The Antitower dungeon. A bunch of little dolls do a little dance for the first half, but then join together to create something not the least bit terrifying..
I agree with other sentiments that the Threshold Kids from Control are the stuff of nightmares. These hand-made puppets may have been meant to help the children of employees adapt to the oddities of the Oldest House, but they might actually be worse than a rubber duckie that stalked its childhood owner to death.

FFXIV has a few that come to mind. The Creepy Doll FATE in Eureka Pyros and Calcabrina in the Antitower Duty from Heavensward.
How about the 7th Guest? A few creepy dolls in that one, even if they're not trying to kill you...

My school theater dept. had a blonde porcelain doll in a pink and white lace dress…she had red eyes and the fingers on both hands were missing. We referred to her as “creepy doll” and stored her behind a prop cross and styrofoam chains from a Christmas carol…
What about Final Fantasy 4's Calco and Brina? They're six dolls that attack you while at the Dwarven Castle and they even got their own creepy battle theme. Oh, and after you knock out three of them, they combine and turn into a terrifying giant doll, Calcobrina. This giant monstrosity is where the real boss fight start as the creepy music is suddenly replaced by FF4's hard hitting boss battle theme. This monstrosity hits you with physical attacks and very powerful lightning magics. And after, you defeat it, it splits back into six dolls which you have to finish off while the battle music shifts back to the creepy music.
I didn't need another reason to find dolls creepy but thanks guys!

I’m genuinely loving the amount of ffxiv comments on this video. Calca is also a “notorious monster” in Eureka within ffxiv. She keeps showing up in places you least expect! Her attacks are mainly based on mind control so that’s great.
I don't know if they count as dolls or not, but the Terror Teddies from Dark Deception are quite the nightmare fuel.

You wanna know what's weird? Both Dark Souls 1 and 3 feature magic dolls... but they're both perfectly non-creepy and harmless.

You're right, that's pretty weird. And you'd think Bloodborne would have been the perfect From Software title to really capitalize on the idea of a creepy doll, especially if it both referenced the dolls from DS1/3, and also happened to be terrifying.
Of all the dolliness that Alice: Madness Returns provides, yeah, the Dollgirl is at the top, and in the interests of giving each entry a fair amount of time, I can see not devoting more time to the rest, but the two dolls with passageways in... unfortunate-but-symbolic locations bear mentioning in the comments. Also, the Mysterious East's geisha dolls in various states of clothedness (and eventually having insect heads) are... a thing, albeit not inherently dangerous like the enemies, or hazards like the dolls with nails sticking out who swing around on swings.

You know, seeing that clip of the doll running into the wall from Layers of Fear just reminded me of a clip from another game streamer seeing that, just laughing hysterically, and then figuring out how to trigger it, and ultimately laughing so hard he was aching by the end of it.

I can’t believe Fatal Frame isn’t in this list! It has some of the absolute creepiest dolls I’ve ever seen. My father refused to look at the game because of it.

Ah. Growing up, my mother collected porcelain faced clown dolls and displayed them across the room from our computer. They were always in different positions when I looked. These dolls hold no fear for me

Probably should have opened with the Kingdom Hearts 3 doll. In isolation, it does have some unnerving qualities, as explained in the video, but after the 4 previous entries in this list, it's a massive step down in horror, to the point of seeming out of place.
My personal favorite ones is the giant doll in the Ashford mansion in Resident Evil Code Veronica X. She's huge and foreboding and beautiful! She's suspended in the middle of the room and you get to look at her from an interesting angle as you stand on the balcony as Claire before going into the hallway to hear Alexia and Alfred talking.

I loved thos video! I actually collect creepy dolls so I'm immune to the fear, but it was so fun seeing there are ball-jointed dolls in the Kingdom Hearts game!
