Dear Ralph, thank you so much for all your inspiring videos! I really like to go down this rabbit hole and discover the sparkling world of Arduinos, buzzers, sensors and LEDs. You are a perfect guide in these adventures.
What would thrill me to see, in addition to even more of your electronics videos, is a "backstage" video. How do you produce your videos? What equipment do you use? How do you envision and realise a new topic? That sort of stuff.
You and all this fine community, stay save and have a great new year.

I'm occasionally asked about the way I make my videos but that would have very limited interest to my (Arduino) viewers. And, to be honest, some of the ways I video and edit took a long, long time to master and improve so I'm probably going to keep that sort of thing close to my chest!

Merry X-mas and a happy new year!
[edit] Btw.: Wouldn't it make a better choice perhaps to even further reduce cables, by having something like a cheap atmega328pb-au or atmega328pb-mu, I remember you had some lying around, at the display pcb, and have some communication with it like via USART or I2C or SPI? You could reduce the cable stuff down to something like 4 or at least down to 6 cables perhaps and have all the graphics code and lcd driving in a separate device then. That also would offer the choice to change the display without changing the main design portion, as long as the main board only sends like meta-commands of "CMD:This is the radio-name string", "CMD:change brightness to x%" and on the reverse communication direction like "CMD:button y was pressed and released", and so on. Easy to do with USART, but also simple along with I2C/SPI when using an /INT channel wire in addition. Such meta-commands sent, would also work along with any type of display like e.g. character display in combination with hardware buttons, just in case you might change that one day. And in future projects it becomes much easier to integrate such meta-command display interface without much additional work. Perhaps it is over the top, but I would even consider something like USART via RS485 on board, or at least a I2C-slave-display with /INT-channel, if I knew I was going to use components of older projects over and over again in upcoming projects, since this reduces integration of various displays with all the different graphic-controllers, etc. down to some code lines for communication via some common interface on the main project component. Same true for input components like various keyboards/key-fields (QTouch, push buttons, rotary encoders and the like) for programmable-arduino-RPN-calculator, web-radio, etc.pp. projects.
But that's just a ad hoc idea to your web radio design. Wish you all the best for your upcoming projects!

A nice idea, Sebastian and I had considered it, basically turning the "dumb" screen into an intelligent one. But I have a Nextion screen here that does just that and which I want to investigate in a future video. I will be able to plug it into the same cable port but only use power and the I2C pins. We shall see. Merry Christmas!

Hi Ralph and thanks once again for the videos. I was a bit surprised about the ESP32 board you have chosen? The TTGO T7 V1.4 or !.5 has a much smaller footprint and does not have the TFT and SD card ports. Another option for the "production run" might have been to use a bare Rover module as the pins are quite easy to solder down and only a handful of support components would have been needed, nice project though and good luck with the move.

    • @RalphBacon
      @RalphBacon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

If I had had the time, Chris, I would have gone for a bare ESP32 WROVER (well, ESP32 16Mb SRAM plus extra 4Mb PSRAM) on a custom PCB but time is one thing I don't have. The TTGO T8 is a generally available module, not too pricey and offer lots of expansion including that built in SD card which works well although I'm not using it in this project for obvious LittleFS reasons! Additionally it can run off a battery with the built in connector and on/off switch.
Consider this project a proof-of-concept; anyone can (re-)design my board for whatever hardware they choose an still use my code (still being developed, now I can change station using a pick list, so much easier).
Thanks for your good wishes regarding the house move, not stressful at all!

Hi Ralph, Thanks for the tip about your Christmas video with its further information re the wiring of the WebRadio. You may recall that I was trying to breadboard the project but having problems interpreting the schematic. Well the education aspect of your mission has really worked well and spurred me on to study EasyEDA. I understand far better now how the ribbon cable headers are interconnecting the different boards. I have down loaded your GitHub ‘EasyEDA Projects’ folder and opened them in EasyEDA. I have watched your tutorials and I have managed to convert the circuit to a PCB, but you will know that the components are not placed. Given my current level of EasyEDA competence I suspect the chances of getting the layout correct so that it all slots together as it should, are not very high. I think I mentioned that my original plan was to breadboard the radio before going on to make the unit with PCB’s. However I think going straight to the PCB is probably by best way forward. Is there any chance you could share the completed project with us (i.e. with the board layout completed)? I appreciate this might be a bit of a cop out on my part, but if it does exist as a file that would be great.
Thanks again and a Happy New Year.

Ralph, Merry Christmas from Kalamazoo, Michigan! I’ve enjoyed your videos quite a lot this year. You have a nice approach on the material, and I love your A/V presentation system. In 2021, I’m really looking forward to your treatment of the ESP32 - FreeRTOS - Arduino circus, with perhaps some MicroPython sprinkled in (🧐?) I spent my career doing both PC interfacing and software, in the laboratory environment, and the ESP32 and RasPi would have been fantastic for that. Spent the last couple of decades doing network admin, with ùC on the edges.
P.S. My heart goes out to you missing Benny at this time of year. We’re a dog family (Labradors), but animal lovers all.

For example, I want to add some preset stations so an IR remote control seems a good choice. Especially now that I have the radio stations read off a text file (LittleFS), so much easier.

How is the low-frequency response of those tiny isolation transformers? I'm really interested in building up the Web Radio project!

I've not noticed any reduction in bass response using the transformers (or the Aukey device either), although I do have it going through a mixer that has separate bass and treble controls. Unfortunately I don't have the spec sheet for them, but as the inductance is 290mH the inductive reactance at 60Hz would be 109ohms - does that help? If you're in the UK let me know as I have a spare PCB.

That sounds fascinating, Paul, but right now (as you know) I'm gearing up big time for my move (fingers crossed, so stressful, surrounds by cardboard boxes) so I will have no time to try things like this out. That said, you seem to be doing pretty well without me!
When I'm in my new workshop (I'm aiming for Easter, all things being equal, and if I don't run out of money!) then I will be in a position to do more of this sort of thing. But you've got me thinking already. A WiFi-based data exchange point. As Spock might have said, "Fascinating".
Thinking about it, the ESP32 can certainly start up a WiFi AP, to which you could connect. Downloading files _from_ it, would be easy enough (simple web page with files listed, click on it and do a GET) but uploading requires that the ESP32 accepts the request from your phone etc. I'll have a think whilst I pack yet more brown boxes.
