[Team Introduction]
Hamachō Hanakagura is a Yosakoi team based in the long-established traditional restaurant "Hamachō" located in Kōchi City. Founded in 2010, the team carries on the legacy of Hachirō Hamaguchi, one of the originators of the Yosakoi Festival, with his granddaughter Misako Hamaguchi weaving this tradition into the present day.
The team's dance is characterized by performances rooted in traditional Japanese dance while incorporating modern elements. Their 2023 theme, "Shasha Rakuraku," reflects a commitment to preserving tradition while embracing new innovations. Choreography is led by professional dancer Masaya Miyata, while the music, a fusion of Japanese and Western styles, is composed by Ippei Tsutsumi, known for his work with "Honiya." Highlights include dynamic formation changes and performances utilizing their signature "Sarashi" cloth.
[Yosakoi Festival]
The Yosakoi Festival is a lively celebration held annually from August 9 to 12 in Kōchi City, Kōchi Prefecture. It began in 1954 with the goal of revitalizing the local economy and lifting the spirits of the community.
During the festival, approximately 190 teams and 20,000 dancers perform energetic dances with wooden clappers called naruko. Each team showcases its unique costumes, music, and choreography, competing at 17 different performance venues throughout the city. The festival also includes a pre-event on August 9, a national competition, and a closing ceremony on August 12, with the entire city immersed in a festive atmosphere.
Due to its popularity, the Yosakoi Festival has spread nationwide, with events such as the "YOSAKOI Soran Festival" held in various regions. It has even expanded internationally, with Yosakoi performances taking place in countries like the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, South Korea, and Taiwan. These overseas festivals blend Japanese traditional culture with local styles, creating unique Yosakoi performances.
The Yosakoi Festival also plays an important role in regional revitalization and international cultural exchange.
