MORE PAINTING HOW TO's: www.muraljoe.com Part one of Mural Joe's Color Theory demonstration to answer questions like "what paint do you use?", "How do you know what colors to use?".
From what I've just learned, you have to be careful of a colors bias (if a color has hue in its name, it isn't a pure color). If you mix three primary colors together, it gives you a muddy color. A hue like cadmium Red has a bias of yellow in it (slight amount) and cadmium yellow has a bias of red (could say orange for both). Mix those two together you get a perfect orange (only two primaries). But if you mix cadmium red with a blue, you will get a muddy color (mixing three primaries). A red like Alizarin Crimson has a bias of blue in it and of course, you get a good purple with a blue with red bias (like ultramarine blue).
If it has Hue on its name it is not a SINGLE pigment, yet it is named after a color that a single pigment for it exists. For example. Cadmium Red has a specific pigment for it (PR108). That pigment although is VERY expensive. A very similar color can be mixed with other red pigments and some yellow pigments. When you paint both side by side they look the same. But when you mix them with other colors/pigments they behave differently (you get stuff like the blue and red becommign black as on his example).

Righteous, This first part helps alot. Its the basics but it solved one of the problems I have been coming across. Like the purple, and how to make a more vibrant purple by using more true reds(magenta) and blues, for example. Great videos. Can't wait for the next one. Thanks for your time and dedication.
nice vid. but talking about the dark secondary colors, I think thats because red is not primary but magenta is primary and blu is not primary but cyan is. Primary colors are Cyan Magenta and Yellow and obviously you have black and white to darken or brighten the color (shade or tint) and the combination of the two (different grades of gray) to give color a tone.
iLoveGuitar Color works differently in ink and paint. For ink, the primaries are cyan, magenta, and yellow, but for paint, it's the traditional red, yellow, blue.
sorry i don't agree. I always use magenta and cyan for painting, i don't use ink for painting. i've been painting for a long while and never had problems using magenta and cyan
+iLoveGuitar I seen it both ways but I agree with u on the magenta cyan and yellow. I feel the whole make true colors wear with Reds and blues and mixed with this yellows you get different shades because they're different colors of Reds ,yellows ,Blues,
@@DeVivoCarlo That's why for printing you work in CMYK, not RGB. But Red, Yellow and Blue are indeed the primary colors. I hope that in the past 4 years you have realized that.
That was black paint from Benjamin Moor. Factory tinted. But to answer how to mix black, it's like brown but with more blue and less yellow. In reality, it's a dark shade of grey. But that's true fore any black.
Hi Mural Joe!! Love your work!! I have a question, when I go to the paint store and asked for Pure Red, and Pure Blue and Pure Yellow, they weren't able to provide me with that. How do you go about getting these correct colors? Is there a color swatch number I can provide them? Thank you so much.
At 3:40 , he says that his primaries are not “pure”. By that, he means that, for example, his blue appears to have some red in it. If you don’t work with paint often, it might not be so obvious to your eye that there is red in his blue. It looks like ultramarine blue to me. So, when he mixes this blue with yellow to make green, the resulting green will also have a touch of red in it. Perfect secondary colors, like green will contain ONLY two primaries...in this case, a pure blue and a pure yellow. If there is a hint of the third primary, red, in either the blue or the yellow, the resulting green will be “dulled” a bit. It won’t be as intense or saturated .
MuralJoe, I've thoroughly enjoyed your tutorials, so many simple hints that I didn't know. I've noticed many questions as to where to get the primary colours that you use in your work. I was just at the paint store (General Paint), I used to be a professional painter (house, not artist) and I got the answer. Paints are made up a colour tint and a base. The base is usually white. In order to get bright reds and yellows, the store cannot get enough tint into the can of white base paint to make those colours so they have to have paints that are a red base and a yellow base. Those are what you want. Like Joe says they don't make a true blue base because they don't need to. You can get almost all blues with a white base. So go to your local paint store, ask for a red and yellow base paint, then pick a blue that suits you and follow Joe's lead. Cheers

You mentioned that the paints are labeled "exterior" when you buy them and get the pure color. Are you using indoor acrylic paint or a special kind of outdoor mix? Also, is there any reason to use normal artist's acrylics versus the acrylics you buy to paint your wall normally? A video about the _kind_ of paint you're using and why, would be really wonderfully useful! You do this professionally, so your input is worthwhile to me.
It would also be really interesting to hear about how you deal with the paints being wet, as you're mixing on the wall. I would imagine you'd get a lot of streaking, etc. That's why I'm normally having to wait between applications of color. Are you? It doesn't seem like it. BTW, your discussion of color theory is really spot on and intelligible. Thanks for sharing!
opposites=complimentary. i hate grey! i love your videos dude. Ive been painting since i was 2 and im building canvas atm. my landlord gave me the okay to just paint my walls though! and here I found you. I wouldn't mind a mural size canvas!

i do prefer to work with a magenta/cyan/yellow system and it gives me these very powerful purples and reds. it is true that joe is not working with "pure" primaries when he uses red and blue instead of magenta and cyan, but given that his paintings are very naturalistic, i don't really see a need for these saturated, vibrant purples xD
Magenta is the primary colour in painting, along with yellow and cyan. Mix all 3 together, you get black.That's what i learned 6 years Fine Arts/Graphics schools. If I'm wrong, i guess that's 6 years wasted.

Yes! The minerals in the mural paints we use are inexpensive and do not mix to create purples. I usually purchase a deep purple for my murals. We prime with Kilz water base primer works over oil and acrylic.artclassmosaics.org
