The Lord of the Chidambaram temple is Lord Shiva in the dancing pose called Nataraja. It is the holiest Shiva temple of the south India. It is also a Pancha Bhootha sthalam glorifying Shiva in the form of ether (sky).The great Shaivite saints have written voluminously about this great temple. Here is a mellifluous stotram praising that "Sea of mercy".
