Nelson Freire (born October 18, 1944) is a Brazilian classical pianist. Freire began playing the piano at age 3. He replayed from memory pieces his older sister, Nelma, had just performed. His teachers in Brazil were Nise Obino and Lucia Branco, former students of a pupil of Liszt. For his first public recital, at the age of four, Freire chose Mozart's Sonata in A major, K. 331.
In 1957, Freire's performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, at the age of 12. He was awarded 7th place at the Rio de Janeiro International Piano Competition. He subsequently received a Brazilian government grant to study in Vienna with Bruno Seidlhofer. By 1964, Freire had won his first prize at the Vianna da Motta International Music Competition in Lisbon, Portugal (ex-aequo with Vladimir Krainev) and he also received the Dinu Lipatti Medal and the Harriet Cohen Medal in London, England. In December 2001, he chaired the jury for the Marguerite Long Competition in Paris. His debut at The Proms was in August 2005.
In general, Freire tends to avoid the limelight, publicity, and interviews. However, in 2011, Freire withdrew from a scheduled engagement with the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira (OSB) and conductor Roberto Minczuk, in support of the orchestra musicians, following the dismissal of about 3 dozen OSB musicians by Minczuk.

Never heard this piece played better. Nelson has all the gifts plus a special magical musical anointing that makes him one of the true greats.

This performance is outstanding because it is all about Robert Schumann. The pianist concentrates on everything that the great composer is attempting to communicate. An ordinary person does not have the capacity or wherewithal to accomplish this almost impossible task.
The music is so great it is almost beyond comprehension.

I regret not having become familiar with the artistry of Nelson Freire until his death earlier this month. Having watched a few of his recitals here on TH-cam, I now realize what a great artist he was. He seems to have had everything. His tone, voicing, security, and virtuosity were second to none, and I look foward to hearing more of his work. I am excited now to hear more performances by him, and from what I have heard about him personally, I wish I could have known him.
I did have the privilege of listening to him live and of knowing him. Simply phenomenal.

What about the Franck Prelude Chorale and Fugue? The Schumann Quintet? All the great Chopin pieces. The list is endless. There is no greatest piece.
Schumann's Symphonic Etudes would get my vote ahead of the Fantasy

I have adored this man's playing since I got his debut recording of Tchaikowsky/Schumann/Grieg Concerti & the Liszt Totentanz with Munich and Kempe as a birthday gift when I was a child. Now I certainly don't mean to be disrespectful, but could it be that he did a teensy bit of faking in the coda of the 2nd mvt.? They took the camera off his hands so you couldn't see, but was he really playing the thirds (later fourths) at the bottom of the leaps, or was he just doing broken octaves? That would be a heck of a lot easier. It sounded like the latter, but I can't really be sure. It doesn't matter, in the contex of this beautiful performance, but those really are the 2 nightmare pages in this piece, for all of us. And when I think of the blood I sweated to get them right....Oh well, just saying.

Everything is easy for him. What we sweat over he accomplishes quickly!! Or at least so it appears. I know he was very dedicated and hard working.
A master pianist. I think playing Schumann needs a certain kind of temperament. It’s sometimes as if Schumann changes temperament in every bar. NF has all of that.
