Aerosmith's "Toys in the Attic" (I never noticed this before!) Song Breakdown

- If you're a fan of Aerosmith, then this episode is for you! In this video, I’m giving a guitar lesson for Aerosmith's song, “Toys in the Attic” with special guests Michael Weber (guitar) and Al Rolik (bass). Together, we demonstrate ALL the guitar parts including the smoking guitar solo in the song.
Regarding (I never noticed this before)...While learning the song, I never noticed that they drop in a D# power chord at 1:53 right after the guitar solo! It goes by in an instant and we speculate whether it was intentional or just a happy accident in the studio!
In typical Aerosmith style, this song has several GREAT guitar riffs, all at the blazing fast tempo of 197 BPM. We also touch on the curious D# power chord that comes and goes in the blink of an eye at the end of the guitar solo. I never noticed it before!
This is a fun and educational episode that will fascinate toy enthusiasts and music lovers alike! By the way….After watching this episode, you might think I have ‘toys in MY attic’ given all the humorous Easter Eggs in this video- I bet you will watch it twice!

Thanks for having me on your show! Always a blast playing with friends. Rock on!
love your playing!
Michael! It came out great. You’re a great player and a great guy. We all had good chemistry and way too much fun! I loved having you on. Let’s do it again! Peace my young friend! Carl
You have got that 1970s feel down pat, swampy nasty and thoroughly wonderful.
Michael--not only are you nailing the Joe Perry parts!-you also resemble him! You could easily pass for his son! Great playing by all you guys!
You have an amazing ear for playing guitar. My God you're as good as it gets ROCK ON
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Mike, ive never heard anyone play these solos with as much heart as you are! F'in great!
He’s terrific! It was fun to feature his incredible talent.
Some folks may forget or overlook the fact that Brad Witford was also an incredibly talented lead guitar player. Although his "role" in the band was perceived as the 2nd guitar or rhythm guitar, he could step out front and crush it when called upon. Brad Witford was a key component of the Aerosmith sound and actually made Joe Perry look good. Never overlook the quiet shy guys in a band. They are some of the best out there.
What a great interpretation of a great song. As a 48 year bedroom guitarist, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Many thanks
My favorite Aerosmith tune. Just dirty, rock and roll. Michael nails Joe's parts perfectly.
I had forgotten how great that song was. Great work on showing it to us. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello. I started playing my mom's abandoned acoustic guitar (the classic scenerio: she took a couple of guitar lessons...and then quit...and there lays a lonely guitar in someone's closet FOR YEARS AND YEARS...until it is hopefully rescued).
I started noodling around on her acoustic in 1977...when I was 11...in my childhood home on the shores of Lake Fenton, Michigan.
I bought Aerosmith's "Toys In The Attic" with my Mom beside me...at a store called "Don's Drugs" in Fenton, Michigan. I vividly remember my Mom asking the long haired hippy cashier guy:
"Is there swearing on this record"? The cashier said "no".
"Is there sexual or drug references"? The cashier smiled and said"no".
So...I walked out of that drugstore smiling ear to ear with a brand new Aerosmith vinyl record in my hands.
This album KICKS ASS...PERIOD!!!
It was a HUGE part of my childhood. Our home stereo in our living room cranked out this album hundreds of times. One afternoon while I was playing this album...my Mom looked at the back cover of the record sleeve and complained about how Steven Tyler appeared to have woman's breasts as a result of the shadow created from the lighting in the room.
I'm 57 now...and I've been playing the electric ever since 1977. I grew up listening to some amazing rock albums...and Toys was definitely one of them...
THANK YOU AEROSMITH!!!
Great job Carl and gang!!
I’m from the Boston area and was fortunate enough to see Aerosmith at my high school when I was in Jr. High. Killer band and amazing body of work!
I’m still spreading the word about you Carl! Hang in there, we in the music community need you!
Another Mass resident! Saw them every year since 1974!
Thank you. I’m hanging on as best I can until the channel breaks out. It is difficult. But your support makes a difference!
This is a phenomenal breakdown of this iconic song! Thanks for doing this!
Nice! The only note I would say is Brad is looser on that rhythm and kinda chugs on the open E. You guys are awesome!🤘👽🤘
Your channel is getting better and better Carl, and videos like this inspire me to pick up my guitar instantly, keep it up❤
Rock on! Play on!
Awesome job on my most favorite band in the world. I’m 63 and still listen too them as much as i did when they first came out in 1973
i wish i could listen to them today but as i get older im into 40's music......im 64 today, maybe the first 2 albums still do it and a few songs from rocks but i have to be in the mood....it pisses me off....lol
Wow, the guy playing the solo completely nailed Perry's phrasing, bends & tone.
Joe has a unique way of playing in the 70's, and for me, he just has that swagger
in his approach.
Micheal Weber is a phenom! Love that young man!
I was in HS; it was great hearing this song for the first time. One after another knock you over songs.
And great album cover.
Well done Carl ! Enjoyed this so much & hats off to the rest of this trio! What fun this must have been for you guys to put this together !
It was great fun! Thank you!
Toy’s in the Attic was the first Aerosmith song I had ever heard. After that I got the LP and it become the most played song I had in my collection. Many decades later and still find myself looking gravitating to it and turning it up loud!!
I thought this was going to be some sort of lesson, but it was A LOT more fun than that! Thank you!
Once again, such an awesome video. Your enthusiasm permeates. The way you brake the different parts down really opens up what is going on. Also, what a cool room and an absolutely stunning Les Paul
Wow, thank you!
Right on Right on...
Such a Rockin' song...
Great stuff, Carl!
I had a blast watching this! Epic playing gents...nailed the solo..so good!
Michael Weber was excellent! All you guys are over the top! Keep the content rolling along......... Thank you!
This was such a fun watch! Fantastic playing by everyone and Michael’s tone was 👌. Carl, I can’t find a decent Song Remains the Same guitar lesson anywhere, would be so pumped if you were able to make a video on that at some point! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
While we wait for more of Carl's Zeppelin lessons , there is a YTuber who does a killer note for note rendition of The 1973 LIVE Madison Square Garden version of that song .Might be able to learn something from him? type in: The Song Remains the Same Mark Baldwin.. cheers.
@@bryanwilliams3665 great, I will definitely check that out! Thank you for the recommendation. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for doing this Aerosmith show. This was one of the first record albums that I bought, near the time it was released.
It was a pleasure! Thank you!
Carl, what a cool, fun video!Reminds me of the first time I heard that great record, which I'll now be listening to again!Hello Al , Billy, and Micheal!!😊
That’s what I try to do for my audience. I like to let people time travel back to their youth!!
Carl, you definitely do a fantastic job! Although I've seen Robert Plant and Jimmy Page separately in their solo and group projects, I never got to experience seeing Zeppelin. Your bands have been the closest thing. It's always such an awesome experience!😊🎼
Thank you so much Tammy!
Fun video... I enjoyed this one... I'm a big pre 80's Aerosmith fan... My neighbor and I used to have a rotation nonstop of Zep,Sabbath and Aerosmith on the turntable when we were kids growing up in Willoughby... It was so much fun and you guys exuded that... Would love to see more of this kind of thing because it lends such a positive vibe to the content. Great job by all!!.. Keep - a - rockin it!
Thanks bro!
Awesome! You're onto something there with the "mini band" breakdown, love it!
Glad you liked it! It was a lot of fun!!
Makes me realize how good the guitar playing was in Aerosmith. Great job guys
Excellent...Thank u much guys...My favorite song on the album...
I've been playing guitar for 40 years and Aerosmith songs are some of my favorites to play. Anything from Toys, but those first four albums are full of great tunes. As for guitar solos, I haven't checked how I play the solos against the originals since I first learned them. Who cares? As long as the solo is rockin' your good in my book. Paz!
Agreed!
Great midnight watch! Michael is on fire during the solos! Very cool content!
He’s terrific!
Great stuff Carl . Love Prime Aerosmith and You tearing it apart!
Thank you
Hi ,,Great solo at about 6:30 or so...Great playing...Thanks Dave
I love your joy in everything you do! I forgot how much I like this album. Need to listen again!
Thank you so much!
Sounds AWESOME! Love your energy and enthusiasm. Keep it up guys.
Wow, what a coincidence. Just this afternoon I had the urge to listen to the track No More No More from this album. I bought Toys In the Attic in 1979 when I was in 6th grade and it defines that summer for me.
Excellent song choice Carl!!! My favorite 8 track!!
Love it!
Great tune, Aerosmith had a lot of surprises in their early tunes as you mentioned.
Holy! SMOKIN HOT 🔥 👍👍👍
:)) thank you
Outstanding breakdown and execution, thank you!!!!❤️🎸🎼

I’ll certainly be looking at the Michael Webber show, been waiting to see someone so do Perry licks so well, I’ve tried to learn loads by ear. Even rick beato said walk this way solo was too weird! I’d love to see more appreciation for Aerosmith ❤
It’s a tricky one! Those guys are really heavy weight riff artists.
What a great video! I'm so in on the love for 70s Aerosmith. This video got me to sub to your channel.
Welcome aboard!
Great lesson! Do more from Rocks albums please !
Such a great channel.
Thank you George!! That means a lot!!!
Love the analysis, like the 3rd and 7th, and the 50's rock comparison. Good stuff.
Killer tune!
🔥🎸🤘😎🤘🎸🔥
Hey Carl great review. Please check out Aerosmith's Rocks album, it's my favorite Aerosmith album. This album is hemorrhaging with classic rock riffs. Rock on bro ❤
Great lesson and playing guys and thank for showing me the correct way to play it as I was doing a few things wrong! 👍🏽👍🏽
Great video and great playing!
More song lessons from Toys in the Attic, Get Your Wings and Rocks would be greatly appreciated -- Thank you in advance!!!
Another excellent Video. Excellent Guys
Glad you enjoyed it
Killer riff for Christmas! Merry Christmas guys!
I remember that the musicians of the rock band Aerosmith are big fans of Led Zeppelin to the point of being close friends with the members of Led Zep.
You're in the ballpark on the solo. You capture it's essence well.👍🏻 Remember, Joe usually has a lot of "grease" on his sound. He'll change his tone/sound/effects sometimes multiple times in one solo.
Great job by all three of you who doesn't like Toys in the Attic rock on from Cleveland Rock Ohio🎸🎸🎸👏👏👏👏👏👏👍💪😎🎼🎶
Rocking the 216!
What a great band and a great lesson..Thanks Carl
Thank you!
It Helped ................
Thank you for this gem. Adam's Apple would be a killer video.
Was that song, written for a movie in 1976! what was the origin of the song, it was and is so unique.
Balls to make it the first cut, and of the album cover!
That riff they play that Steven Tyler mimics the pre chorus is so odd and unique in a cool way. A joe Perry quirky cool riff
Holy fuck Carl I’ll be learning this, please please please do more songs off these albums Aerosmith 70s. They’re on par with how much I love zep these days. So glad to see this !
Great so glad to hear it helps!
I’d do more of these. You guys look like you were having so much fun.
It was truly fun!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic check this out. Brad himself! th-cam.com/video/zrkSm5W_PF4/w-d-xo.html
I wish I had that before I had to tweedle it off the recording!!! …They have so many brilliant and quirky parts. My respect for him and the band keeps growing every time I learn a new song of theirs from the early period!
this was truly amazing, Carl, you should do online online guitar lessons.
Please keep dissecting those classic rock songs !
Seen Aerosmith in 1977 in Albuquerque with Nazareth as the opening act. Aerosmith brought it that night. They pretty much played the "Toys in the Attic Album in its entirety.
Love Aerosmith very very
Fun Video and a Nice Job all around! At 9:24 on the Timeline: The 'Mystery' of the D# on Beat 1; and, used as a leading tone into the E7 figure on Beat 2 - creating a rhythmically "lopsided measure" - is not really so mysterious when one considers that so much of the sonic content of the song; and specifically the solo itself, is inspired by 50s-era Rock-n-Roll sounds - ala' Chuck Berry, et al - and, if you listen to the D# into E with it's specific 1-2,3,4,5,6,7,8 rhythm placement, you'll quickly discover that it is a direct quote from the Intro to Jail House Rock by Elvis; only in 'Jail House' the "1/2 Step Below Leading Tone" is on the 'And of 4', leading to the 'Down of 1' - Same Idea, just rhythmically displaced on 'Toys' from the way it was used in the source material. So the theory here is as simple as dropping-in an old R&R sound where it 'feels' right in a new song; which in the case of 'Toys' worked-out in a slightly different pulse position within the measure; and thereby, creating that "lopsided measure" to make it fit into 'Toys'. In fact, if you pick-up the video at exactly 9:24 on the Timeline COLD, Carl sounds like he is busting-out the intro to Jail House Rock. Fun Stuff!!! If I were a gambling man, my bet would be on the fact that answer is actually so obvious, easy, and right under their collective noses the whole time, that the answer ends-up elusive.
Those angry 9th chords really rock the boat.
Nice!
Thanks guys. Merry Christmas to you, your family and everyone at Baldassarre.
Merry Christmas to you and yours!
It looks like a TobaccoBurst but it does remind me of my 78 Rootbeer Brown LP Custom, a darker brown than yours and it might have been the heaviest of all guitars with the shipping weight of 25 lbs but the case ate up at least 3 lbs
Long story short, "smith's Get Your Wings is the very *first* rock album I ever heard in my life. Way back in 74, when I was 12. Even though GYW holds a very special place in my heart? For my money...Toys is a hard album to beat 🎶♥🎶
Yeah, man...my earlier statement still stands, lol 😎
You should do atoms apple.
Can you please do Combination?
I know! On the bucket list!!
This guy rules.
Great vid as usual. That Les Paul make my mouth water
Mine too!
The tone is awesome. Which amps and overdrives are you using?
great breakdown used to play it when i was 16 in a basement band with no singer 58 now and still love that tune think its there best besides uncle salty
Thank you! …and Adam’s Apple is another great one!
At 5:45 Brad does slides down the neck to get to the "A" note and then the "E" note. Otherwise, excellent!!!!
Jan 10, 2024. Steve and Nuno are purely magical!
Great band.. more please..
I’d love to do more!
Not sure how you're going to follow this one up Carl. So much fun!
Challenge accepted!
All killer no filler!
That’s right to the point. Thank you!
I saw that guy on Troglys Guitar Show...Cool Guitars Guys...
Back Rocking
Shades of 'Communication Breakdown'.
Draw the line was a very underrated album
As with all the other songs on Toys - Brad, Joe and the band probably did demo versions but the playing on this album was mostly done by studio musicians - the lead breaks were done by Brad and Joe.
Nah, the only time studio musicians covered for Joe Perry was on part of Get Your Wings... famously, two different guitar players, Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner played the two solo parts of Train Kept A' Rollin', because Joe was wasted and couldn't play, and Jack Douglas brought them in. They (as we all know) knocked it out of the park, but I do remember as a teenager thinking "Weird, Joe Perry never does tapping"... and it turns out I was right. 🤣
Hunter and Wagner were the only ones so far to ignore their NDA and say they did it - all the tracks on Get Your Wings were done by studio musicians except Woman of the World and Pandoras Box. Rocks sounds completely different as they had the success and power to do it themselves.
Well that’s interesting….but nevertheless, it’s still a great composition and very well played by whoever played.
Absolutely - and of course while the playing is fantastic it’s the writing that makes the song, in this case done by Aerosmith - geniuses at tapping the zeitgeist and taking blues rock to a new level.
@@johnwatson3948 Gonna need some evidence on that one. If other musicians played those tracks, why wouldn't it be Hunter and Wagner?
JAMES SCOTT NICHOLSON,ONTARIO, CANADA 🇨🇦 I AM 52 IN AUGUST. I HAVE PLAYED FOR FORTY YEARS. I WAS A BRICK LABORER FOR A FRIENDS COUSIN. ONE MORE ROCKIN NIGHT OUT THERE, AND I WOULD TRADE MY PAULS, AND STRATS FOR IT....
I'm hearing no bass signal. That's a shame because I love how the bass follows.

When you're all coked up, this is a ballad😅
"Lick and a Promise" is another good one.
White power propelled these sessions as did session guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner for a lot of solos on these sessions and the previous album, "Get Your Wings.". Saw the band multiple times in the mid to late 1970's and they could never muster the solos to "Walk this Way" or "Train Kept' A' Rollin'" like the studio albums.
I think you meant “powder”. And that would be true!!! 197 BPM!!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic Yep, powder
Really? Go see the video of Train from Ponitac Silverdome in 1976 and tell me Joe can't play like the studio album. Truth be told, I have heard over 40 different live bootlegs of Aerosmith from '73-2014. I have never heard Joe or Brad play any solo the same. That is INTENTIONAL to keep them fresh and add spontinaity. In fact, that is true of Steven and Tom & Joey as well, but not as noticible. As for Walk This Way, Joe's 1st solo is almost always mostly note for note with the studio version, but he usually improvs during the verses (which is generally the opposite of most "live" versions of their other tunes where they stay fairly true on the meat of the songs, but improvise the solos). Both Brad and Joe normally "tag" thier solos the same live as cues to the rest of the band, but that improvisation is what I love about Aersomith...and why I have sought out and spent way too much money over the years on bootlegs! (Side note - I remember going to see John Mellencamp with a friend who was a big fan of his - and I love his music, too. When we left, he asked"well - what did you think, doesn't he sound just like the record? My reply was - yes...so why did we bother to come??? About 7 years later, I took my then wife to go see him again, because she was also a fan - this was when he had the violin and accordian player, ie "Cherry Bomb" - and he was great! The whole band improvised - and John even messed up a song! I loved it!
@@toddschuster570 Neither Brad nor Joe match the playing level of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter. I have seen the band countless times from 1976 - 1979 and understand the variances of live playing vs sticking to the record. Not to take anything away from Brad or Joe with my comments on it, but they are not technically as proficient of lead players as Wagner and Hunter were - they were hired guns and the solo on record for Train is one of the greatest solos ever.
