the reason why the mortar shells don't explode when they go like 3 feet is because i think they only become armed when they travel certain distance in a downward trajectory or somethig like that
Is that a practical mechanism in them that detects this stuff or a computer chip that calculates this stuff? Id imagine something practical because this must have been a thing way before we had computer chips capable of doing this stuff

@@rikittu yeah i'd imagine it's practical, atleast when i did my conscription service in 2019 and most of the grenades we used were from like the 90's and we were taught how the mechanism worked but i don't remember specifically but it had something to do with like when the grenade is horizontal in the air the fuse would activate and when it started coming down for a certain time it would be armed and only after that it would be able to detonate
no, mortars are contact explosives, and if they dont hit hard enough on the right spot, they wont blow, your thinking of full on missiles that have remote explosions

Most mortars can only explode if they've had a certain flight time meaning if it comes out of the tube and lands 4 feet in front of it, it wouldn't have had enough flight time for it to arm and explode. But you also just know that, that means that in the past they've had to add this mechanism because it has happened before where it just blew up in front of them...
It is also likely that it could have been training shells, but they're usually a different color to the real deal
so why they didn't make the same mechanism for the missiles?

The issue with the mortars is the tube gets hot and that heats up the propellant and it ends up misfiring and making that flame once it shoots out. Basically the mortar team needs to slow down or cool the tube down

Mortar shells are set to arm after it's spun a certain number of times in flight. So the times it just plonks out of the Tube, its safe. It's safety feature for that exact scenario we witnessed. So they're safe usually when they just plonk out.
It's a similar things with missles. Which is why they don't detonate when they fell back after the failed launch

Mortar shells do need some rotation before exploding, but they're explosives after all so you should run anyway
