This music video is showing the push and pull of a toxic relationship. At first, Billie is walking through a cold, sterile building, closing doors, which might symbolize her closing opportunities off to herself. She sees her lover, runs after him, and they immediately start fighting. Then he’s gone. Showing how, in these kinds of relationships, people tend to “switch off” emotionally, or even just leave. Then, she sees him again, runs after him, and they immediately begin to have a more violent fight. She keeps pursuing him in these endless hallways just to get him to engage. This fight leads to them finding passion in each other again (remember, this is a toxic, all or nothing, relationship). They run down the hall together hand in hand, happy and on the same page for that brief moment. Then, they leave the building. We see Billie on her own and she’s actually looking more relaxed, confident, happy, even flirty. This could symbolize how much healthier and happier she is without this relationship. We see her start to look behind her, we see her tense up, and then we see him, following her. Now HE’S the one pursuing HER. He chases her and she is running desperately from him, from the relationship, knowing it’s not good for either of them. But, he catches her and he full body tackles her. She had no chance. They start fighting again. Sometimes it looks playful, sometimes violent, other times it even looks passionate. Notice how neither is winning. It’s just a constant scrabbling fight (like these kinds of toxic relationships). At the end, they’re on the ground, panting, exhausted, hunched over, but they’re holding onto each other. We even see a brief smile from Billie. They’re back in this relationship and they’re in a “good place” but it took them both pursuing each other, fighting, hurting, leaving, to get to this brief “good” moment where they give in. But really, how long will that moment last before they start fighting, hurting, leaving, again? It’s all the cycle of a love/hate toxic relationship where the highs are high but the lows are so, so low. I find it interesting that the last shot they’re in front of a fence, which almost gives this feeling that they’re both caged into this situation they can’t get out of. Anyway, I know that was a long comment but I hope it helped. Overall, the video is incredibly sad but also a really well done interpretation of the push and pull of a tumultuous and unhealthy relationship.
Billies explanation of chihiro the song chihiro captures many themes of “spirited away,” such as loss, and a battle of the unknown, and reuniting with people you love, mirroring chihiro's true feelings
A little info for what the video is about. For the song, she “envisioned a dream-like narrative” with “long, dark hallways and shutting of doors” in order to “symbolize the different corners of the mind,” according to a press release of the new music video. This could be seen as the musician and her costar Nat Wolff run away from each other through several rooms and even fight a few times in dark hallways and eventually outdoors. In the music video, the pair just can’t seem to get rid of each other no matter how they try, which Eilish said was a representation of their “inescapable connection.” They appear to battle it out in the grass for the last few moments of the music video, before the music video ends with them sitting together in the grass during a sunset. Eilish said this was meant to show the “external expression of an internal push and pull, as our deepest feelings of fear, love, or desire inevitably catch up to us, no matter how hard we try to run away,”
Ha yeah, there's a reason Billie requested that people listen to the record in one go, front to back, in the correct order. with full attention. It's a complex, sophisticated, cinematic masterpiece that demands a lot of plays. Because of this, there were no lead singles. Oh, fwiw, Chihiro is the lead character in Spirited Away and the video/song has a lot of references to this. Good effort CLiff, it's not you. The album throws curveball after curveball, but is ultimately wonderful.
I swear every time I listen to this… i hear something new… like, “change you could borrow.” The double meaning… .because she pursued someone that she had to chase to be in a relationship with…. The experience of the relationship is a through line in the album… connected songs that push the story further if you are determined to relate it to her experience…. And so when she had enough and wanted to get out of this mess… all of a sudden he wants to keep her…. You can tell she realizes he’s only with her out of curiosity…. The whole album is about her experience of this important, failed relationship with a few other subjects addressed.
Ugly? How can they? Imho she's not only an astonishingly gorgeous girl, but also a beautiful and magnetic human being. I have a good term for those who say that about her: envy. Btw I'd lived thru a rollercoaster-like relationship depicted here, always revolving between love and fight, and breakups and reconciliation. Not quite toxic, just immature. Eventually we grow up and learn better - most of us do, quite usually. PS: This song got me addicted so bad. And I'm subscribing to your channel. Great review 👏
Sending you ❤ cliff. Hope your mind becomes more clear, things ease up a bit. Remember in order to be here for us, artists etc... you must first be there for yourself. Take care 🫂
It is supposed to represent the struggle in the mind and how we compartmentalize the good and bad. The closing of the door is us closing our minds to certain things. It is about a toxic relationship and what we will and won't accept.
More Billie please :) Her new album is amazing, her best work yet in my opinion. But if you want some more official videos to react to, I'd recommend, Happier than Ever and Everything I Wanted but all her work is interesting in different ways. If you haven't watched any of her live performances, What was I Made For at the Oscars was just incredible! She also recently sang with Lana del Rey at Coachella and their performance was so beautiful and sweet. Apparently, Billie was a huge fan of her growing up so she was a bit starstruck when they sang together. very cute!
In her interview with S. Colbert she said she want her music/videos to make you think. This video was terrifying for me to watch, just because I can't tell the feelings behind the chase.
The clip may sound pointless at first. The purpose of writing the song is to refer to the Japanese animation "Spirited Away". Billie said that she loved this animation and that's why she wanted to make this song. If you watch the animation, you can see that there are a lot of references to the film, both in the clip and in the lyrics of the song.
After she dropped Bad Guy around the same time Em dropped Bad Guy, I was low-key expecting them to collab (not with Jessie Reyez) or for him to make a remix of her bad guy
You should react to her songs XANNY and Listen before I go They are both deep and personal songs. I think listen before I go will give you more insight into her poor mental health when she was younger
Definitely react to more Billie please. Also people who trash her vocals are probably the same people who trash Lana Del Rey's bc they saw that one performance where she was really nervous, hate on Megan Thee Stallion, and say Drake won the rap battle over Kendrick. Their favorite songs are probably by The Chainsmokers and Michael Bay is their favorite director.
JNCO JEANS ARE OFFICIALLY BACK I hate to tell you but pretty much everything from the 90s has come back and the 80s but the same pair of JNCO jeans that I bought in the 90s that cost me $45 and it’s literally the exact same pair are for sale right now as a new fall release for 2024 and they are $295.
I know it's about Spirited Away, but the video reminds me a lot of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. Despite loving that movie (and this song) to bits, this *was* uncomfortable to watch. Also, I adore that JNCOs are back. Reminds me of high school in a good way, haha.
I wished you would have avoided the music video and listened to the audio - now you were distracted by the images, the ambiguity, and confusion and the MUSIC and PRODUCTION and the LYRICS would have stood on their own, and probably/possibly done you more good if you have listened before you watched. I personally don't believe ANY Billie song is made BETTER by the MUSIC VIDEO [and I am completely aware of what Billie puts into them and generally their excellence but none make the song better { the only exception for me, might be 'Hostage' } not even 'Bellyache' or 'Bury A Friend' - in my view] - things are clearer in Billie's mind that they are in ours after seeing a video no matter how well down they are - and I like/love her videos, including this one. But I'm 70 and know to listen before I watch and especially listen to Billie before listening to a reaction.

Don't know how I feel when artists need to take an existing piece of outstanding art and subvert it their way. Spirited Away and most of Studio Ghibli's movies will stand on their own as timeless classics. Just don't know what Billie Eilish brings to the table in terms of using Japanese culture as a springboard. On one hand you can view it is as just paying homage to something she loves and could relate to. On the other hand, you could view it is as unimaginative and uninspired to name the song that and try to incorporate Japanese media and culture as a star at her level.
What.... You think she named it Chihiro just for the reference..... Just for the random funsies...? You think she named it simply because it's a popular Japanese movie...? The song isn't directly about Spirited Away nor is the name of the track just a random reference to something she likes. If she was unimaginative and just made an homage song to the movie, the music video would just be Spirited Away references or animations. The music video shows it's not simply a Spirited Away song or reference.
She references scenes from Spirited Away, but the song is only loosely based on the movie, its also about herself. It's not simply "Spirited Away" the song. "Like Chihiro, Billie appears to be sing about feeling lost in the song." When speaking “CHIHIRO” to Rolling Stone in May 2024, Eilish said, “The song is loosely based off of that movie, which is one of my favorites. It’s kind of from her point of view, mixed with mine.
@@Vincisomething Yeah, I read all the same stuff you did before posting. Which is why I question naming a song in Japanese when you are in no way contributing to their culture. You can't deny that the song being named Chihiro serves no purpose other than her whimsical interest in Spirited Away and anime in general. She's a well established superstar for the entire world with her own following and making her own path. It's just trendy and cheap to play into Japanese culture right now because it pulls additional attention.
@@Vincisomething I understand fine. We can just agree to disagree that her naming the song Chihiro was not necessary. I speak Japanese, lived in Japan, have a Japanese wife and I don't see what her naming the song Chihiro does when she knows nothing about Japan except for some anime she has enjoyed. Mirrors to the character development of the main character in Spirited Away notwithstanding. Most see the song as portraying a toxic relationship either with another person or with your own emotions. Spirited Away doesn't really explore that.
I love the song but the video made me a little sick at heart. I know about toxic relationships but I didn't need to see Billie getting tossed around. A little too real for me.
