On the flip side, you’ll be made fun of by everyone else for embracing your culture. Given in most areas the Indian pop is small, u just gotta act and speak like everyone else to “survive”.
And if you ever do go to India, you’ll definitely not be seen as Indian even if u fully embrace your “indianness” in the states.

In High School so many people would ask me to do the stereotypical Indian accent, and at first I'd do it. I'd make them laugh and like me more but at what cost? Mocking my parents, grandparents, other family, etc. who worked so hard just to give a me a good life. Like I swear brown people in America need to respect ourselves and take pride in our heritage. This can only happen when we stand up for ourselves.

Here’s the thing though. I feel like Americans, even Indian- Americans don’t understand that, there is no one particular Indian accent. Ther accent changes according to which state that person is from, &what languages they speak as well as what their economic background is. South Indians speak English with a different accent, punjabis have a different accent, theres a Gujarati accent, there’s a posh South Bombay/Delhi accent both of which are different…then there’s so much more. To stereotype Indians in a single block is kind of annoying, because to Americans we’re all the same. Everyone does the Appu accent which is so derogatory.

    • @akp51v-content
      @akp51v-content ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@rachellotus5137The first part "Pa" (प) is actually like the p (p+uh) in "Stop". It is quick and it is not "aaaa" or "pyaa"
The second part "te" (टे) is also a fast like the "take", not like "tail" or "teyyyyal". She stretched it too far for too long.
The last part of the surname is an L or "l" (ल) and it is also moderately fast like the "tell" i.e., it does not linger around once the word ends.
      So,
Patel (पटेल) has a fast and crispy pronunciation. While some regional people will add extra emphasis on the "t" part, the word still remains a quick one.
Again, I am writing this because my surname is Patil (पाटील), and some of my non-native contacts have pronounced the "pat" part like "p + yaaa", they thought it rhymes with the English word "hat."
But, my surname has a vertical line that we call "Kaanaa" (काना) in Marathi (मराठी) language. It represents a prolonged "aa". Still, we do not stretch it.
And the "til" part is simply "till" in English, but without that extra L.
      Now, here it gets tricky.
Patil is my surname that has the following pronunciation:
      "Paa (पा) + Till"
But converting Indian words into Latin script should have been: "Pateel" if the classic rules were followed. But it is an established family / position name.
So, most Patil (पाटील) use "Patil" as the spelling.
Also, it is very easy for voice typing keyboards and unfamiliar people to get confused between Patil (पाटील) and Patel (पटेल).
I actually chuckle when that happens, because Patil is generally a surname in Maharashtra (महाराष्ट्र) state, while Patel is associated with our immediate neighbour, Gujrat (गुजरात). It is also nostalgic because three of my close friends from college were Patels.
