Pencil Sharpener Restoration

- In today's video I would like to show you the renovation of an antique pencil sharpener from GUHL and HARBECK Hamburg which dates from 1870.
The renovation was quite complicated because it was a problem to find a printer that would be willing to print gold.
The font technique was used the same as making the decal on the mugs.
But they must be baked in an oven at a temperature of 170 ° C and there is a problem. I had to do the renovation three times because even at lower temperatures my color rose and it was bad.
In the end, the decals only had to be painted.

Outstanding restoration. Never knew such a tool existed for such a “simple” function! Thanks!
Than you live too short
Thanks :)
The German engineer thought to himself, "I don't want to invade Russia, but how can I make a simple device as complicated and over-engineered as possible?" Great resto and the graphics are killer!
You Know . . . Cause he didn't have a knife
Bellísimo
I love it. Over engineered but beautiful. That was the day when every thing was highly decorative. Great job and honest enough to show us mistakes. Thank you both for another classy restoration. John
Thank you John :)
Over 150 years old and with care should last for centuries. A lovely antique piece for a study and it hasn't looked as new as this for all that time. Well done, Veronika and to you, Radek.
Thank you so much :)
I was thinking 'screen printing pleeease!' Perfect! 🧡
Thanks Deena :)
Very careful work. It is a precious tool. I love the look they gave to the old machines. Thanks for your videos Radek.
I thank you my friend :)
That’s the thing with the Germans. If they want a sharp pencil, they are going to get a sharp pencil and it’s going to stay a sharp pencil....or else!
Yea... drawing a blade angled over the tip while rotating was not hard enough
Or else ... there will be war.
@@tommypetraglia4688 Would you achieve excellent results? No
@@43painter Sad. True. My family came from Germany around 1870 and I'd gladly die before I set foot there.
Birds 🐦 calls in the background providing a sweet soundtrack to this absolutely 💯 👌🏾 amazing 👏🏾 restoration video 📹.
Thank you :)
Definitely a beautiful little machine! As always, excellent work!
Thank you Kerri :)
I swear watching your videos is very calming.
So I'm pleased :) Thank you, Radek
A magnificent restoration! I can't get my head around all that engineering just to sharpen a pencil! (I wonder what they would have come up with for a sewing machine).
Thanks John :)))
This is a rare old style pencil sharpener getting restored as new excellent keep up the good work.
Thanks David :) Radek
Wow, you find such interesting and neat stuff to restore, thanks for sharing
You are an artist. Cant say I enjoy watching people work that often. It's a true pleasure watching you bring old iron back to life. Masterful.
Thank you so much John :) Radek
I was so anxious when you stripped off the paint, I said to me "I hope he gonna do the same paint job as the original" and you did... a big thank to you and a lot of other "restorer" would take example on you.
Nice job!!!
Thank you for the beautiful and encouraging comment William.

Работа класс!!!
И аппарат очень интересный.
Спасибо Михаил :)
Really the highest level. No discount for Eastern Europe. You can be proud, you have risen up.
Thank you :)
I didn't realize early pencil sharpeners were so complicated. As usual though the Victorians did thier grandest to make these tools artistic as well as functional. Well done.
Thanks Denise :)
Very cool. I’m so glad you kept the gold lettering!
Thanks :)
You must have been so frustrated when you had to repaint it after it burned. Nice restore!!!
Oh yes, thank you :)
@@VeradonaRestoration I don't understand, why did you put it in the oven?
@@eduardolarrymarinsilva76 Gold decals are intended for printing cups and it must be placed in an oven at a temperature of 170 ° C for 20 minutes, otherwise it is not abrasion resistant.
@@VeradonaRestoration Ok, so did you put the heat on too high? Did you try again with a lower temperature?
Beautiful!! This was obviously made when things were made to last and not break 6 months after you buy them, causing you to have to go out and buy another one. We have turned into such a disposable society. In more ways than one.🥲
So glad that you put the transfers on. Great job!
Thank you :)
Thank you so much in the name of all the historic instruments you restore👏This little machine is very high-quality and of course made in Germany🇩🇪!
I than you Wolfgang :)
When you soaked it to remove paint, I was aghast. Then I saw you making replacement decals. Whew! How did you manage to copy them?
Clock drawing on a computer...
The person who originally designed this pencil sharpener was a genius, a true artist. Your work ranks you as an equal artisan, renewing what once was to what it is again. That you showed the reason to start over says much to the axiom, try, try again. Good on you to show you're human, that craftspeople err. Love the concluding music.
Thank you Tony for a beautiful comment :) Radek
A thing of beauty, but ever so slightly ’over engineered’ 😂
Pencils were obviously not taken for granted in those times. A what a nice long point it produces.
So many intricate parts on this restoration. Beautiful job as always even with the decal accident. I love that you left that in the film too. It's nice to see other people make mistakes and can overcome them too. 💛
Thank you Latasha for a nice comment :) Have a nice day from the Czech Republic Radek and Veronika
Really happy birds in the background!
😄☺️😀
am discovering many of your older restorations / they maybe some of your best !!
🤗😉
Congratulations, it has been one of the most incredible pieces I have seen restored, Thank you for sharing such wonderful work for the senses.
Thank you very much Nesdel :)
Удивительный агрегат! Реставрация выше всяких похвал! Молодцы!
Спасибо Nina :)
From the opening scene, I could not wait to see the sharpener work. Was not disappointed. Fantastic restoration. Thanks...
Thank you so much Joe. I hope you weren't disappointed ?! Radek
Wonderful restoration of a tool that must be very rare. Thank you for putting on new decals that identify the manufacturer. This preserves the sharpeners provenance. I wonder how many pencils this sharpener has sharpened in 150 years? You made it as good as new. Thank you and best wishes from the USA.
Thank you very much Pat. Have a nice day Radek.
Can't think of a classroom anywhere today that would not love to have that machine, including Georgia Tech.
It brought back remembrances of my dad and pen knife too.
Thank you for your story Joe. Radek
I had never seen anything like it. Beautiful this machine after its recovery. Hugs to all.
Thank you very much Mario. Have a nice day Radek and Veronika
I have several pencil sharpeners with dimensions of about 1 x 1.5 x 2.5 cm and I've no idea why someone in the past would want to invent a machine like this but that is beside the point. As usual, an excellent video about a project that has been done with love and devotion. I imagine this sharpener was at some big important office of a big important company, at the end of the 19th century. Great video!
Yes I agree Marc. Thanks
after seeing it in action?...beautiful!...a perfect point every time!...(definetly for a draftsman!)
And I thought restoring a classic Saab 900 was complicated... This pencil sharpener puts the whole a car to shame lol. Absolutely love this one, awesome restoration dude👍
Thank you for the humorous comment :) Radek
Never even knew that existed! Badass work!!!Badass tool!!
Thanks Craig :) Radek
This video is beautiful. People are saying over engineered and over complicated..... I see gears meshing, blade cutting, levers actuating something and turning a handle that makes it all work together. At one time this was a marvel of the modern world. I would rather have this on my desk than a pencil I click. You see electronics die and get dumped in a landfill. Mine I clean and sharpen.
Thanks
Beautiful restoration. The most unnecessarily complex pencil sharpener I can imagine.
Yes, thanks Zeke :)
Great restortaton. I've never seen a pencil sharpener like this one.
Thanks Tommy :)
Fabulous! I want one! I love your attention to detail while staying with the basics. My list of recipes from your videos is growing. You do a wonderful job!
Thank you, I really appreciate it. Have a nice day Veronika
What an unbelievably complicated device... for sharpening pencils! But, I love how it works! Nice job on the transfers, too!
Thank you Vickie :)
Beautiful restoration 👍👍👍 and what a complicated and ingenious machine just for sharpening a pencil - I absolutely love it! 😍
Thank you very much :) Radek
Серьезно с точилкой заморочились, целый станок получился... Удивительно, сколько приспособлений было изобретено человеком. Спасибо за вашу работу, интересно увидеть что-то совершенно новое в своей жизни)
Спасибо Максим.

Wow that's great antique pencil sharpener.
Thanks :)
Beautifully Done. Google says 1870's. Would only work well if the pencil Carbon isn't broke inside. I hate that when it happens. 2020 Furloughed pencil pusher.
What a beautiful, complicated pencil sharpener. Very nice restoration. Thanks!
Thank you Ben :)
Very nice machine, which I had never seen, very complex and excellent restoration!👌
Thank you very much Ronald :)
Your very brave to show your mistakes! Though it's big, it is gorgeous! The gold makes me think that this was for the rich, as they probably were the only ones who could afford such a luxury!
Yes, I think so too Annette. Thank you for the comment. Have a nice day Radek.
I liked it before the restoration but now I love it another great job you too
I have not got to the end of the video but I know it is going to be good. Well done VR!
Engineering imitating art or art imitating engineering? I think this is a perfect combination of both. I was happy to see you kept in the problems you had with the painting. A very nice restoration
Thank you Trevor :)
Amazing piece of history, great restoration.
Thank you Larry :)
Beautiful job of restoration.
Thank you Nena :)
Oh my gosh! This is a giant! But it is glorious, would love to have it for my pencils... :-)!
That's the fanciest pencil sharpener I've ever seen. Not the the ones i had in mt classrooms growing up. Good work 👌
Thanks Rick :)
