Here in the US at least, they said back in the 1990s that floor multi-effect units will make pedals obsolete. In the '80s it was rack mount effect units. Here we are in 2021 and the pedal business is probably the biggest I've ever seen in my 25 years of playing. 🤣

There's a physical novelty to pedals that multi effects will never replace. It's the same reason people still buy books.

Bought a Line 6 Pod Go from Music Bliss last year and it's been my all-in-one guitar processing unit for all my productions. I think another big factor is the amp simulation. As someone on a relatively tight budget, this worked out for me very well as this is now the only unit I use whether I'm recording in the bedroom, or playing gigs (realistically, I only ever got one jam session since past year haha).
If you're after the absolute best of the best in terms of tones, the conversation can be endless with debates about analog vs. digital, which pedals you're using, but something I remind a lot of people nowadays is that we're also coming to the point of diminishing returns with digital sounds. At least for my use as a bedroom producer/casual gigging musician, I feel like any improvement in tone beyond my Pod Go is trivial at best. I honestly feel it's getting harder and harder to find anything that DOESN'T pull its own weight.

Great documentary, lots of relevant information, point-of-view clearly stated. Stompboxes will never go out of style, no matter how far multi-effects units advance. For short-sighted people like me, that is. The fewer and larger the knobs, the better; on a dark stage. Even better still, the old MXR pedals with knobs you can turn with the side of your boot, hehehe

I have build my pedalboard last year and it was fun but I always wanter more effects or scenarios when i push one button and 2 or 3 pedals switches. This become very expensive and no practical at all. Month ago i bought HX Stomp XL and connected to my Revv G20 become something amazing. I can do everything I always wanted! So I am selling all my pedals right now.

It’s actually a great way of learning and the tones are close enough to test out and see what you like. The zoom multi effects pedal is great for beginners and you’ll save money knowing that you don’t like X effect or X amp tone

If the choices is multi or analogue, i choose multi, but if multi or real amp, i choose real amp . As long as i have the budget. Analogue is expensive but the tone are not to good, modern multi is not bad. But real amp always better

Hi there. Very good and helpful video, thanks. :) How would you say the "responsiveness" of a multiboard is, compared to an amp and three-four pedals? Years ago, I tried different multi-boards, and they actually sounded just fine. But it was like there was a certain "lag" between my fingers and the sound from the speakers. For instance, it was much harder to get the guitar to go into feedback (the good kind) than with an amp-pedal setup. But that was perhaps 4-5 years ago. Would you say the multiboards are past that now?

If Metallica are using Axe Fx live, then the change is inevitable. It might take many years, but eventually more people will switch to digital.

"They've" been saying that stomp boxes were going out of style since the late 1980's and early 1990's when effects processors were on the rise then too. Here we are 30 years later and pedals have never been more popular.

Its easy, if you're on tight budget go for Multi FX if got big budget then buy analog. But nowadays many multi fx got good sound quality like analog. Even the cheep Chinese multi fx sounds good tho. Well we all need to accept equipment Revolution sooner or later. But its individual preference choice.

For saying"out of date" is an opinion based statement. I'll say plug ins is replacing hardware especially during pandemic where everybody stay at home. At the end of the day, nothing's gonna change. People like stompboxes for simplicity and hands on, like multi-effects for portability, like plugins for studio conveniency. All opinion based. One thing I can say for sure is stompboxes sounds better (ONLY IF YOU AB-ed IT)

but the one flavored stomp box does not guarantee a good tone, you have to do buy n sell to create a pedalboard of your taste, while the multi effects can produce a good tone/patch in just an hour

I've never ever played a multi effects unit that was in the same league as a quality single purpose stompbox. Single effect QUALITY stompboxes arent going anywhere anytime soon. Multi effects are good for a month then you'll want the next big thing. But with classic analog stompboxes you'll have an effect that will always sound good and not effect your core tone negatively like digital multi effects. I personally build all my effects myself these days and I couldn't possibly be more turned off when i see a multi effects unit.

I agree. Analog stompbox will always have its irreplaceable place in my heart. Yellow Comp> bd2 > sd1 > ge7 > JoyoAmerican and for practicality a bt100 zoom single box multi for modulations
