    By the way, Eli, I LOVE your clarity! You explained Smart Tempo so anyone would get it immediately. Another time, I just walked away from it and re-recorded the tracks so I didn't have to use it. I didn't get what the guy meant -- between the project and the region -- which one was going to change to accommodate the other! LOL!!!

    Thank you so much, I mucked about all day trying to get a tricky piece of guitar to fit the grid. Plus, I watched a ton of tutorial videos etc and just confused the issue. This made it so clear and now I think I can get started in next to no time.

    Wow this is so cool. Spent so much time doing manual flex editing and "adaptive" tempo adjustment to make it not sound too weird on drums. This will be a total game changer for everything.

    Hi Eli. Thanks for this. At about 4:29 you smooth the tempo to one consistent tempo, after already having had Logic map your tempo. I'm trying to do this with 4 audio tracks at the moment. They were all recorded in time with each other in a previous project, but the tempo fluctuates a lot. I've got them into a new project and Logic has successfully mapped the tempo. Now I want to straighten the tempo to a flat 126bpm and record further tracks - however, I can't seem to do what you did here. When I create a new Tempo set and set it to 126, Logic just seems to ignore it and carry on playing the files as they were recorded. Any tips?

    • @cornucopiamusic
      @cornucopiamusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update: Right, to clarify, the 4 tracks are 3 vocal tracks plus a single backing track which was not recorded to a click, but alongside an old original track which had predated recording to click. I've now managed to get the backing track to synchronise with Logic and play at either the variable tempo or the constant one, but the vocal tracks simply don't want to sync up. I had hoped that if I imported them with the project following the b/t tempo, then when I flattened the tempo to a constant speed, they would follow suit, but they don't. They're fine when I use the tempo map created by the backing track, but as soon as I set it to a constant tempo, the backing track is correct but the vocal tracks are out. Frustrating!

    • @elikrantzberg
      @elikrantzberg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure flex time is enabled on all the tracks.

    • @cornucopiamusic
      @cornucopiamusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't work. As soon as I enable any of the Flex Time options (Monophonic, Slicing etc) on any of the vocal tracks, it immediately changes the timing on that track. I haven't yet worked out how it's changing it, but, for example, when I have the vocal tracks lined up with the backing track at the original (dodgy) tempo, if I enable Flex Time on any of those vocal tracks, they're immediately sent out of sync - this is BEFORE I do any tempo-smoothing. I've just signed up to Groove3.com in the hope that there would be something in the videos, but not yet. Any chance you could cover something like that? Bringing several tracks into a project that weren't recorded to a click, then straightening them all out...

  • @nounix
    @nounix 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello! Great video! :) :)
    I need to import old tracks and just "fix" their beat-lines so that the beats don't drift off the beatgrid. And then export the file as a new, "corrected" version of the original track. So, say, i import a disco track (or a live track) whose tempo is, approximately, 126 bpm (as it wasn't made using software, the drummer is never really "on" the beat).
    So I want to do is quickly import the final tracks into the LPX window, have LPX analyze the downbeats (transients?), and then snap them to their "correct" quantize locations (in whatever tempo I choose: maybe also at 126 bpm - exactly - or even to make a whole new version at 110 bpm. Again, exactly, at 110 bpm). And finally export the new, "corrected" track that each beat throughout it sits perfectly at the correct grid positions. :)
    How do I do that?
    Also, after I've corrected all the beats - automatically and/or manually, will it then be possible to just play around with the tempo slider and instantly be able to hear what my "corrected" track sounds like in all the different tempos (while the downbeats remain in their "correct" position for all tempos I try, of course)?
    Can I do the above with LPX (with Smart Tempo or another way)?

    How would this effect a vocal performance? Specifically a rap verse. We never record to a click.

  • @JpDubbed

    4:05 does that mean you can CHANGE the tempo of an audio file to match a solid BPM?
    I just got Logic Pro 10.4.2
    I really just need to know 2 things. 1. Creating a tempo map for the song I wanna cover. 2. Edit the recorded drum tracks using flex time.
    Can I drag in an mp3 file of, say, an ACDC song and have Logic automatically create a tempo map for me using Smart tempo? WIll it be accurate to the song?
    What if the song I'm covering has multiple tempo changes? Like 120 to 130 to 100 to 150, etc.
    Can I actually change the song file so it lines up to 1 bpm instead of having multiple different tempos? 🤔

    • @elikrantzberg
      @elikrantzberg  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The short answer is yes; you should be able to do all of those things. You'll need to switch between Adapt and Keep modes, and change tempo sets, etc. But it should work. As far as how well it will analyze the tempo of the song you drag in (if it is mp3 it will get converted to either aiff or wav), it's dependent on the actual song. If there is a strong rhythmic pulse throughout; it should be very accurate.

    • @JpDubbed
      @JpDubbed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elikrantzberg But I could always adjust the tempo markers in the Smart Tempo editor from what I saw when I played around with it. And that'll change the tempo map I'm guessing.
      I tried it out using a new tempo set like you showed, but it didn't change the tempo of the song to match a solid bpm. Maybe I did it wrong?
      Do you have videos on this?

    • @JpDubbed
      @JpDubbed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elikrantzberg hmm, it worked for one song. So in my project, change to Adapt, import mp3 file, let it create markers, adjust in editor if need be, then create new tempo set to round it to 1 solid bpm...and the song file should change to match that bpm? 🤔
      I tried with a different song and the bpm is just so out of line with the song. It's a rock song. The bass and snare are prominent so idk why it's doing that.

    So why can't we record with a click (or tracks) and have Logic do this same thing as it did with the tambo... only just slightly nudging the beats... working as a super Auto Q for audio? It seems with Flex Time & Smart Tempo technology... this would be a no brainer. The manual says with "Automatic" mode it uses the other 2 options depending on whether a click/track is on. That's the part that makes me think it should work. I can't get it. Thanks!

    • @Locrian1
      @Locrian1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      john busby, if the melodic line is somewhat rhythmic then logic will try to guess it. If not, then you can align using the older beat mapping in the global tracks (this will work as either a project conform to region tempo, or as a region conform to project tempo)

    @rawstarmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It seems to work well but you are using a shaker, very non-specific sounding percussion. I hope it works well with obvious rhythm instrument and melodic instrument, hoping they aren't getting to strange sounding?

    • @Locrian1
      @Locrian1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      rawstarmusic... As long as there is rhythmic content, then you should be able to get a conform if not automatically then using the older beat mapping

      @rawstarmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's the artifacts ghost that is haunting me, good ideas that work but with a cost in sound. Mr Eli is a drummer so he has percussions, that made me suspicious. What happens with drum rolls and such.

    • @Locrian1
      @Locrian1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends, if you opt for Logic to conform to the audio's tempo then you'll get no artifacts; if you choose to conform the audio to Logic's tempo then you'll get exactly the same artifacts as when using Logic's conventional time stretching algorithm (which are pretty good when used correctly)

      davdcl499 funny I think exactly the opposite. To me the adapt mode is the important factor. Unless everything is in the box and quantised, in which case none of this is that useful. But you are right - it is very useful for those who use live instrumentation or sounds to build around.

    Great video. It's like an auto quantize....but actually better results
    according the the manual. You recorded freely at about 87bpm and it
    worked so good at 120! Looks so promising... (since I record loads of
    live guitars etc). BUT!! it seems Apple made it so it will only work...
    "without any other tracks or metronome going"? They could have easily
    made it an AMAZING feature to use all the time throughout our recordings
    (to some extent of course). Why handicap it by requiring no timebased
    anything? I'm doing tests to see if I'm missing something. I just read
    the LPX manual Smart Tempo Overview -
    help.apple.com/logicpro/mac/10.4/#/lgcp9281e70c . It seems they
    are saying in AUTO mode the project tempo is kept when recording "if
    another time source /region is present". Seems to me that would be for
    normal tracking but I can't make it work. Very confusing. I can only
    seem to get it to "conform" my live recordings if I "solo" the track
    during recording (or have NO other regions present). What am I missing?
    Maybe they will make it work that way in the next update?
