To add a sample chapter as a style guide in Novelcrafter, you can usually find an option to upload or input text samples in the settings or customization section. Here’s a general approach: -Navigate to Settings/Customization: Look for options like "Style Guide," "Samples," or "Customization" in the tool. -Upload or Input Text: There should be an option to upload a document or copy-paste a sample chapter directly. -Specify Usage: Indicate that this sample is to be used as a style guide for tone, pacing, and writing style.
I recently got Novelcrafter. In Codex, there is opportunity to add Story Genre. What level of detail should be added here? What I’m mostly thinking is whether I should just strictly add the genre only or should I possibly e.g. add the main trope that I want to come through the story. For example, let’s say I’m writing a fantasy, with heist trope. Would it be a good idea to add the heist trope in the Story genre? I don’t want to overwhelm the AI by giving too much information, but at the same time, I want my chosen trope to come across, and I don’t want AI to forget this aspect of the story.
It's a good idea to specify both the genre and main trope in Novelcrafter's Codex. Adding the trope, like "heist," along with the genre, "fantasy," helps the AI focus on the specific elements you want. This ensures your chosen trope comes through without overwhelming the AI. For example: Story Genre: Fantasy Main Trope: Heist This approach provides clear guidance for the AI to craft your story effectively.
Is there a recommended source for the very basics? While I can tell you did a great job explaining this, there are a lot of specific lingos and concepts that are things and ideas I have never come across. This seems to have its own language, and I don't yet speak it.
I prefer Mistral Large, I can't speak on the price, but Mistral Models are not moderated, plus I prefer Llama style prose, as its not too far from my own style so its easier to rewrite a scene. Also because my story is R-rated.
I may be incorrect, but as I understand it Openrouter charges the same as Open AI per use. Openrouter charges more for credits. Example if you pay 20.00 for credits, you get a little less, like 17.00 in credits. But that is the only difference.
I'm befuddled by the AI costs myself. I'm happy to pay pennies, even up to $20 per month in total for AI usage, so can anyone confirm that this is not in addition to flat monthly charges. In other words, is it the case that you only pay for what you use? If you never use a particular AI program that month, it costs you nothing?
@@phnompenhandy I only use OpenRouter with NovelCrafter. After I linked my OpenRouter account I was able to add $10 to my account. I was immediately deducted $1 from my total credits, which is OpenRouter's commission. I then had $9 dolars credit on my account which can be used for my AI use. Each AI instruction from NovelCrafter is itemized in OpenRouter under the usage menu and I believe you have up to 12 months to use those AI credits in your account. Hope that helps.
@@phnompenhandy Openrouter and OpenAI is pay what you use. There aren't any other costs, so if you don't use it, you don't pay for it. There are subscription chat subscriptions like ChatGPT and Claude Pro that charge $20 per month whether you use it or not; however you can't connect those to NC.
@@phnompenhandy Novelcrafter itself is a monthly flat fee, and any AI actions are getting charged through OpenRouter (or other connections you set up), which will be on-top. That's because some people only use cheap/free models, run local ones on their own hardware, or don't use any AI at all.
Yes, NovelCrafter typically has a help desk or support team that you can contact for assistance. You can usually find their contact information on the NovelCrafter website under sections like "Support," "Help," or "Contact Us." They may offer support via email, live chat, or a ticketing system. Additionally, you can check if they have a user community or forum where you can ask questions and get help from other users.

I love this software. Thanks! I am finally making progress on my novel I have been working on for a couple of years now. I got going pretty good and was using scrivener which I thought was great. I was basically manually doing the same thing by going into chatGPT and Claude and copying back into scrivener . I am having a problem exporting though. The chapter summaries are doing fine but if I try to export prose, it puts short paragraphs on each page. I am exporting to Docx, and my Mac opens it up in pages. I can place it into InDesign fine. But i have a different workflow before putting into InDesign for final formatting. Any tips?
Hey there, that's a known issue with people using Pages. Right now, you can open the word file in Google Docs and re-export. We don't have an idea why it only happens with Pages yet, but we're working on a fix!
@@novelcrafter one issue that I have in InDesign using the Book module is solved by not using .docx files only exporting to the older .doc word files instead. That’s how I have to export my scrivener files. Novelcrafter doesn’t give that as an option. Just in case that helps?

I can't get Novel crafter to import my Vella episodes as chapters. It refuses, as it apparently only lets you import entire novels with chapters already marked. You cannot import a file that is a single chapter. This seems like an oversight but feels like a bug. I have a question regarding your prompts, can they be set up to limit the difficulty of the words to a specific grade level? For example, if your novel is targeting young readers rather than let's say middle age readers with a college degree ? This could be helpful too if you're writing a children's book or inversely, writing a complicated SyFy novel like Dune.
Yes, you can set up prompts to limit word difficulty to a specific grade level. Specify the desired reading level in your prompt, use readability tools like Flesch-Kincaid, and provide examples to guide the AI. This helps tailor the language for your target audience, whether it's young readers or advanced readers.
