    The cost of commercial icemakers are ridiculous , this is one of the best Ideas I have heard of in a long time. I live here in Central Florida and go through pounds and pounds of ice a week. Fortunately I have a commercial ice machine that sells 20 lbs bags for $2 right down the road from me. But I still run out of ice, taking lbs of it with me to work every day. Been watching this build from the beginning and I don't miss a update. I want one, but the idea of me putting one of these together is just to scary even with your videos to watch.

      TBH, I get it, but I'd encourage you to go for it.
      At the worst, you destroy your supplies and they go in the garbage, right? If that's not going to financially ruin you, I'd say the benefit of the sense of accomplishment you'll get from doing this will outweigh the risk you're taking.
      You could certainly do this cheaper than him though, find a used deep freezer for one, and to avoid destroying it irreparably, you could drill a hole through the lid, where there is nothing critical.
      Worst that happens then, is you patch up the hole and either use it as a regular deep freezer, or give it away to someone.
      Just getting the deep freezer and wiring/plumbing the ice maker ate the "hardest" parts of matching his v1 machine, and the ice maker kit comes with the self piercing saddle valve to make the plumbing trivial.
      Skip the part of messing with the freezer wiring if you're worried about that and buy a separate power supply to wire them in to.

    I have to say, I've never really had a need for an ice maker at home since we don't really use much ice. But this really makes me want to build one and find excuses to use all of that ice! $.44/20lb is insanely cheap. I think the Rutters up the road from our place sells 8lb bags for $3. This might end up being a nice side hustle for me!

    • @donearnhardt6336
      @donearnhardt6336 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One thing that I think was overlooked was that he compared the cost of a bag of ice from a convenience store to his energy cost to make the same amount of ice. He overlooked that the cost at the convenience store also includes some fractional, prorated cost of the equipment used to produce the ice. He did not include the cost of his own equipment in any way. That’s a big problem. He could have used some prorated cost of his own equipment added to the energy costs. For example, he might guess that his equipment might last 10 years, and if he paid $370 for all the equipment, his equipment cost would be $37 per year or about $0.10 per day. So if he makes 10 pounds of ice per day, it would take 2 days to make 20 pounds, at an equipment cost of an additional $0.20. So adding $0.20 equipment costs to the $0.44 energy costs comes to $0.64 for the 20 pounds, still much better than the convenience store. It all depends on the assumptions made for the life of his equipment.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep watching Don, I do include all costs including equipment

    • @weschubb3855
      @weschubb3855 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@donearnhardt6336 He does tell you his cost for all of the equipment. Though he doesn't break the cost of equipment down by hour. But 99% of us aren't going to take a loan out for $370 worth of equipment or try to pay for the equipment by the hour. There's no need to put the cost of equipment into the hourly breakdown. BUT if you want to break it down that way, that's fine and up to you. Either way I think he does a great job with laying all of the relevant info out there. Fridge Ice makers and deep freezers typically last a long time.

    • @donearnhardt6336
      @donearnhardt6336 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weschubb3855 I was not talking about the hourly cost of the equipment. And I know he mentioned the amount of money he spent. But when you compare his cost to make ice verses the price he paid at a convenience store, you can’t just use the cost of the electric energy he paid to make the ice. You have to include the cost of his equipment too. The convenience store includes the cost of their equipment in the price of the ice they sell in addition to the cost of energy (plus their other overhead and profit which I was not suggesting that he calculate). His cost per bag of ice includes the energy expense plus the equipment costs.

    • @donearnhardt6336
      @donearnhardt6336 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weschubb3855 by the way, I’m not trying to distract from what he did to build the ice maker, I think he is very innovative and smart to build this ice maker the way he did.. I didn't see the comment but whom ever thought economically you where going to spent more or the same making ice was not thinking clearly. The ice company has to not only make the ice, deliver the ice and freezers to many retail sites using trucks [fuel,insurance, maintenance, etc.], drivers [and all that comes with employees], and share profits with the retail outlets. That is why it costs $3-4 a bag, most of those costs are not what it takes to make ice but the overhead.

      Your statement is true... this gets misconstrued all over the place. Hot water goes through a faster temperature change (rate of change) to freezing than does cold water, but the overall time for the completed state change to ice is longer for hot water.

    Incoming water temperature will only affect the amount of ice a little, here's why:
    To turn water into ice 2 things need to happen.
    1. The temperature must drop to the freezing point
    2. The material must undergo a phase change (from liquid to solid)
    How much energy is needed for these 2 steps is described by the "Specific Heat Capacity" and the "Specific Latent Heat" of the material.
    1. The Specific Heat Capacity says how much energy is needed to change the temperature by a certain amount of a certain quantity of material.
    2. The Specific Latent heat says how much energy is needed for a state change (liquid to solid for example) of a certain quantity of material.
    For water the numbers are:
    Specific Heat Capacity: 4,200 J/Kg°C
    Specific Latent Heat: 334,000 J/Kg
    This means:
    To drop the temperature by 1 degree celsius of 1 kg of water it takes 4,200 Joules of energy.
    To undergo the state change for 1kg of water/ice it takes 334,000 Joules of energy.
    Converted to more common units:
    Changing the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree fahrenheit takes 0.000294 KWh
    Changing the state of 1 pound of water to ice takes 0.04208 Kwh
    As you can see the majority of the energy goes toward the state change.
    Here's a short calculation to show the difference in 2 examples.
    1. Incoming water temperature is 90°f:
    To cool 10 pounds of water to the freezing point it will take (90-32)*10*0.000294 = 0.17 KWh
    For the water to then change to ice it will take 10*0.04208 = 0.42 KWh
    Or in total 0.42 + 0.17 = 0.59 KWh
    2. Incoming water temperature is 60°f:
    To cool the 10 pounds to freezing point it will take (60-32)*10*0.000294 = 0.08KWh
    The state change will remain the same at 0.42 KWh
    In total it will take 0.42 + 0.08 = 0.50 KWh
    As you can see the difference between 90°f and 60°f water is only 18%.
    So it will be an improvement but don't expect major things out of it.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here is a shocker, I'll give you a sneak peek at the next test series. My incoming water was 99 degrees because the pipe is in the sun. Now factor that in to time to convert per day.

      I'm very interested in seeing which approach you try for pre cooling. To bring the temp below the ambient shop temp would seem to require a complex solution. And it would be less energy efficient than letting the freezer do the cooling as it is now.
      Pipe insulation could limit the amount of heat that the outside pipe absorbs, but the water flows very slowly and sits in the pipe for a long time.
      Have you measured the duty cycle of the freezer? Meaning what percentage of 24 hours does it run? Unless it is more than about 70%, I would add a third ice maker. 50% more ice making hardware should produce way more than prechilling and is probably the most energy efficient. It has significant upfront cost, but you have installing these down to a science. Who knows how many makers could be installed before the freezer will max out?
