  • Many doctors mistakenly rely on serum B12 levels in the blood to test for vitamin B12 deficiency.
Now if you do get your homocysteine tested and despite both B12 supplementation and eating beans and greens it’s still too high (meaning double digits), I have a suggestion: Should Vegetarians Take Creatine to Normalize Homocysteine? Thank you SO much for this!!!! I have macrocytic anemia, but my B12 is off the charts HIGH. I keep telling them to test my CELLS rather than my blood. This video helped me so much- I am going to ask my doctors to test me for FUNCTIONAL metabolic B12 deficiency!!!! You are a godsend.
I never know how and what specifically to ask for from them ❤

Unfortunately, there’s no such test. That’s why it’s so difficult to diagnose and supplements give a false normal or high reading

I’m afraid to ask a question that may have an obvious response, but here I go. If I regularly consume B12 fortified nutritional yeast (nooch), could that be considered sufficient supplementation? Or am I supposed to be taking some kind of B12 pill?

  • @GregMeadMaker

This is a perfect example as to why I need to keep in touch on a regular basis with Dr Greger's website. I am a strict vegetarian. I knew I should be on B12 supplements. I ran out. Wanted to clarify which type of B12... Then I forgot about it. .. until my blood test in November. MCV 101.2. and TPO 580 down from screaming high 1146.
My primary doc is not concerned and told me to stop being a worrier and stop drinking. I reminded her that I hardly drink at all-- about a glass or 2 of honey wine a month, and that I'm on a wfpb diet, but I mistakenly neglected taking my B12 for much too long. She said then take B12 and recheck in 3 months.

@@lordofthestrings86 Thanks for the suggestion, but I took a look and they don't have USP or NSF certification that the contents are as described. Dr. Gregor has talked about how important that is as the vitamin industry can be very shady and vitamins can contain anything whatsoever, but I haven't seen him recommend a (vegan) brand that actually has one of these certifications. Frustrating.

It might have been nice to emphasize this 3 years ago before I had a blood clot. The fact of the matter is most B12 supplements are crap and don't work. Standard process has a bovine liver pill that's excellent. Now I take that and I eat fish twice a week mainly sardines. This just goes to prove that being strictly vegan is not the healthiest diet.

I’m sorry to hear about your health woes. How long had you been on a whole-foods plant-based diet before you had your blood clot?
My B12 supplement works extremely well. I had my level tested two weeks ago it is above 900! I just drop a tablet into the blender every time I make a vegan cheese sauce, a broth, a smoothie, or hummus.
      Best wishes to you!

Bummer. I had a DVT blood clot after the pandemic kicked off. I was going thru a divorce at the time also. Good times indeed. I was cycling about 75 miles every day so I could sleep. If I didn't I would lay awake all night. I was not eating or hydrating properly as a result of the understandable stress and depression I was experiencing and missing my kids. I never got treated for the DVT because they basically closed all hospitals. I've had to figure out on my own what happened to me and I'm pretty sure it's exactly like you say. My cycling caused high homocysteine levels and I had low vitamin b12 which caused my DVT. I was a smoker. I quit after the DVT. Been pretty healthy since. I do have some palor in my hands and feet like my circulation is off.
I wonder what else I have to look forward to. You're a little further along in your journey... anything I should be worried about?

The death cult diet is so deficient its followers have to supplement. In many cases, the body doesn't absorb the crappy B12 supplements because it's doesn't come in natural form, same with iron and zinc. But it's OK, let the sh**head learned the hard way.

Nothing less than 1000 mcg daily will be effective.
Better if sublingual (keep the tablets under the tongue for a while)
To work well, B12 also needs other B vitamins - take a B Complex with a good dosage and then a specific B12 supplement

This response isn't directed at the original commenter, who is just a troll who didn't bother to watch the video anyway. This is for any non-vegetarians out there that may be genuinely curious.
Note that up to 40% of the general non-vegetarian American population are also deficient in B12! Further, B12 doesn't come from plants OR meat. It comes from bacteria. At the dawn of humanity, when soil bacteria was more prevalent in our diet, humans got their B12. Today's meat-eaters "benefit" from the fact that animals still eat bacteria-laden food. But today even that is no longer strictly true. In modern western farming practice, livestock are often intentionally fed B12 supplements specifically to address this deficiency.
