After 55 yeas, or so, on this earth, I just discovered that I love chickpeas! I was just wondering about growing them in my small garden and after watching your video, I'm going to give it a try this season! Thank you!
I’m so excited to try this. I’ve already grown. Jalapeños tomatoes green peppers cucumbers sunflowers 🌻 and morning glories all from seed. Mother Nature is so amazing! Thanks for making this video.
Mexican grocery stores usually have fresh garbanzos beans! Very hard to otherwise, this is definitely the first plant I’m going to try growing in my home.
Absolutely beautiful!! I didn't realize they were single pea pods. I grow tons of beans but never garbanzo beans. Those really are compact and beautiful! I may try next year. In my victory garden. I have my main garden and my experimental garden off to the side. It's where I test different types of plants and how they'll do in my extreme weather and if you can just grow a hearty garden just by throwing stuff out on the ground. Turns out...you can!!
I love Chickpea and they are So nutritious! It’s good to know that they also can be grown in the fall as I live in Texas and we have long growing seasons ❤😊. I appreciate your information. Thank you so very much
Great video! I’m growing Garbanzo beans for the first time and didn’t know what to expect. I was surprised by the beautiful foliage. I’m glad you showed the flowering process. I would’ve been surprised also by the tiny blooms. Thanks for the info. 💚
Love this video thank you for showing the complete timeline all in one video, it makes such a difference. Makes me want to grow chickpeas down here in SD! ~Amy
Here i am, after eating chickpeas masala curry, I am wondering how chickpeas were made??? Thanks for this video. The way you explain everything is understandable and inspiring. ❤❤❤
Thanks for this video, my first batch came out like mush after 3 days, then I found out that they were GMO chick peas so started a new set different brand🙏🤗
Excellent video. I am trying garbanzo bean growing for the first time this year and they are just starting to produce pods now. Hope it will ne successful
Thank you so much, California garden. This is a great and new idea to bring to my fall garden. Will start it today to see whether I will get a harvest.
My son loves hummus and wanted to know if he could grow chickpeas, this video was sent to him so maybe he might be motivated to try it. We also live in the socal area so a lot of this applies to us. thanks
Also, I have eaten chickpeas, my whole life, mostly in a dish called pasta faziole , and hummus, of course and I just learned that you can eat them. Green had no idea.
Great video. I’ve only ever seen fresh chickpeas at one of the Cash’n’Carry Indian grocery stores near Cupertino. But hey looked like a lot of work to prep for cooking
Very good information. All of your videos are done so well. I appreciate your knowledge sharing about our area specifically. I'm in North Orange County.
I loved this video. When you roast the chickpeas whole, do you eat the roasted shell? Or would you take the chickpeas out of the shell like a roasted peanut? Have you grown sesame seeds? I would like to see how they are grown.
Thanks! Good question, I roast the chickpeas with their shell on but only eat the chickpeas inside and throw away the skin. The chickpeas get cooked nicely inside the pods when roasted and you get that roasted aroma when eating as well, as you remove them from the pods. Delicious!
Beautiful video. Everything was so well explained. Thank you! Maybe I missed it, but what was the duration of your crop from when you first planted them?
Subscribed liked and sharing your good TH-cam video information on growing chickpeas organically shared to my x account for my followers to learn as well and thank you for your time and good experience to share with us . Holistic Chef Barry Anderson of Phuket Thailand writing in .
Do you inoculate the seeds? We cut the plant down to the ground but leave the roots in place. The earthworms appreciate it and because we inoculate, the remaining roots are providing nitrogen back to the soil. I enjoyed your video very much. Black garbanzos make for the best hummus!
What PH would you suggest for the soil? I have had huge issues with other crops as I didn’t realise how important for certain things it is to have the correct PH.
So what happens after the plant reaches maturity and you uproot it? You have to plant their peas (with pods) again next spring? I assume that means keeping some peas/pods over the winter?
this is the best video! I've been following it and my chickpea plants are currently flowering! I need to ask though, some of the leaves are yellowing (probably due to too much sun) -- how much light do you grow your chickpeas in? Mine get about 5hrs of afternoon sun -- is this too much? Thank you!
Great info! I'm in CA 9b and have a greenhouse; could I start from seeds now(Sept) then transplant to greenhouse, or should I wait until Jan to start from seeds? Or just do it now and see for myself.
The water helps the seed coat soften. The paper towel acts as a medium for the seeds to grow roots. The plastic bag traps moisture and increases humidity, which creates the perfect environment for germination
One time I soaked chickpeas to cook the next day but forgot them for 2 months. When I got them out the water completely disappeared and they sprouted long shoots both ends. I didn't plant them tho😢
I keep them moist at all times, so water as soon as the top surface dries out. Seedlings have shallow roots, so any dryness and they will suffer. Remember to drain out the excess water from the bottom.
@@CaliforniaGardening One hundred square feet or 10 feet by 10 feet of garbanzo plants will produce about 5.5 pounds of beans. Using this figure you would need about 2,700 square feet to produce 150 pounds of beans, enough for one person for one year.
Chickpeas are one of those foods I would have never thought to grow my own. But look how easy and how pretty they are. Question... Do they require daily watering? I would like to try these in my community garden plot at UCI (same zone as you) but I'm only there 2-3 times per week..
chickpeas, lentils, and peas are drought tolerant since they are from the middle east and grew naturally in the deserts and scrublands over there before being domesticated by the Mesopotamians. the roman armies often harvested wild legumes growing in northern Africa and the levant to supplement their rations.
After 55 yeas, or so, on this earth, I just discovered that I love chickpeas! I was just wondering about growing them in my small garden and after watching your video, I'm going to give it a try this season! Thank you!
You can do it!
@@CaliforniaGardening what chickpeas are perennial and what are the other crops you have in the video? Thanks!
I love the step by step explanation. You are a good teacher.
Glad it was helpful!
Now that there's a pending chickpea shortage, it's a good time to grow your own. A good crop to grow as part of your survival food garden.
Plus they can be blended with lemon juice, cumin, salt, pepper, cooking oil, and water to make hummus.
Im here because i soaked my chickpeas rinsed and kept in fridge for a week only to find them germinated 😂 will be planting them
I’m so excited to try this. I’ve already grown. Jalapeños tomatoes green peppers cucumbers sunflowers 🌻 and morning glories all from seed. Mother Nature is so amazing! Thanks for making this video.
Excellent video, very informative but you didn’t waste anyone’s time. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, I am trying this in Georgia. I have about 12 seedlings in trays now that sprouted from an ordinary bag of Goya chickpeas.
Sounds great!

The foliage is delicious too x
This technic would be good for survival time!. I'll have to try planting chickpeas!
I tried brown chicks peas that I buy from the store, the other day! It was so yummy! Its so nutty in taste too!
Love this video thank you for showing the complete timeline all in one video, it makes such a difference. Makes me want to grow chickpeas down here in SD! ~Amy

CiaoAmyC, you can grow them in South Dakota. The ones I buy are grown in North Dakota.
Excellent job on explaining. You are a great teacher.

Thanks for this video, my first batch came out like mush after 3 days, then I found out that they were GMO chick peas so started a new set different brand🙏🤗
Ouch!
I HAVE ALSO planted brown chickpea sprouts and they just germinated 2 days ago!
This is an excellent tutorial!
Thanks for sharing how to get more leaves vs more pods.
Thank you for the video. I'm in central California 9a. I'm going to try this in my Fall garden. Soaking the beans right now. Wish me luck. 🙂
Thank you for such a detailed and direct video! You answered all the equations I had. Time to go soak some beans.
Glad you found it useful
I'm definitely going to plant some in the spring...thanks 😊
I'm sure you'll be happy growing it!

Thank you so much, California garden. This is a great and new idea to bring to my fall garden. Will start it today to see whether I will get a harvest.
I have grown long time ago for my in laws. They used call the green gorbanzo “ hurra” . It was fun to grow .
What brand of potting soil do you use? Thanks for the great video!

excellent video--- short and sweet ----and everything I need to know----thank you
Wonderful clip. Thank you so much! I will also try it. Between chickpeas and Tor Dahl, I will be a happy man!
That was an awesome video! You covered everything needed! THANK YOU!!

This was really helpful. I live in Pennsylvania, so I’ll be starting them a little later as it’s chillier here, my first time growing very excited.
Thank You for the video. Your camera view helped a lot!

Really interesting. I want to try this. 😋 Hope you are well.
Try it
That’s cool bro I was always told we couldn’t grow them in California because it isn’t hot enough. Looks like I’m gonna try growing chickpeas.
Yes you can easily grow them in SoCal!
I live in central California but we get real hot summers. Most years
Thank again
Thank you for sharing the process, this will be my first time. Do they prefer full sun or partial? Thank you I love your channel 💚💫
Part sun (4 hrs) or full sun (8)
Thank you! Im starting mine tonight ❤

It did not work for me! My beans spoiled before sprouting. Bummer! I will try another method next season 😄

Beautiful video. Everything was so well explained. Thank you! Maybe I missed it, but what was the duration of your crop from when you first planted them?
Glad it was helpful. You can start harvesting in about 60 days but up to 90 or even 120 days since sowing. Planting was done 4 weeks after sowing.
@@CaliforniaGardening Thanks again.
Will try growing them next June when it is our cold season
Only thing is that monkeys will probably come and eat them
Very beneficial thank you 😊

Nice job and thank you
I'm doing it. I got the space.

Thanks for visiting, chef and glad you liked the video!
Very informative. Thank you! Do chic peas need full sun? How can you tell they are ready for harvesting?
Yes they do need full sun. I usually harvest one or two to check before harvesting more
Thank u for sharing your idea, i am interested for that, where can i buy some seeds, i am from phillipines
Excellent video!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you
thank you for the amazing video!
Glad you liked it!
Interesting! I ate some green chickpeas from my garden today, they are so sweet, kind of like a pea. How do you prepare the leaves to eat?
You can cook the leaves with lentils (just like spinach)!
Thank you for your guidance .
Do you inoculate the seeds? We cut the plant down to the ground but leave the roots in place. The earthworms appreciate it and because we inoculate, the remaining roots are providing nitrogen back to the soil. I enjoyed your video very much. Black garbanzos make for the best hummus!

5 hours of afternoon sun is OK. Chickpeas dont like too much heat though so the leaves get yellow when the heat is excessive
hello...... I live in california & looking for bel Patra/ Vilva Plant. Please suggest a good source. Thanks for amazing videos that you make.
Bel Patra is a tropical plant, very difficult to grow in California!
Awesome 😎 Thanks
Great info! I'm in CA 9b and have a greenhouse; could I start from seeds now(Sept) then transplant to greenhouse, or should I wait until Jan to start from seeds? Or just do it now and see for myself.
September is too early. Wait till Jan to start!
Great vid!!! Thank you!!! 😄👍👍👍
I tried growing chickpeas this year, because I want to eat a raw chickpea, but I had such a low heeled, only like five chickpeas per plant
Yes you'll need a lot of plants
How long it takes from seed to harvest? 1 month or?
Around 3 months
Well done!❤️
Thank you very much my bro , i like your video 💚💚.
Glad it was helpful! Make sure you watch our other videos too! And don't forget to Like and Subscribe!
If you sprout them in water is it the same as germinating (them in paper towels?
The water helps the seed coat soften. The paper towel acts as a medium for the seeds to grow roots. The plastic bag traps moisture and increases humidity, which creates the perfect environment for germination
Wow thank you
One time I soaked chickpeas to cook the next day but forgot them for 2 months. When I got them out the water completely disappeared and they sprouted long shoots both ends. I didn't plant them tho😢
How often did you water in the first step when you planted the beans in the small cells?
I keep them moist at all times, so water as soon as the top surface dries out. Seedlings have shallow roots, so any dryness and they will suffer. Remember to drain out the excess water from the bottom.
Thamk you
How did you get the holes in the red cups?
I used a soldering iron to melt holes in it
Can I grow chickpea direct on filed after soaking?
Yes!
What is your guess on how many ounces of chickpeas will one plant produce? Thank you
Not a lot. 6 plants produce enough for eating 2 times, for 2 people
@@CaliforniaGardening
One hundred square feet or 10 feet by 10 feet of garbanzo plants will produce about 5.5 pounds of beans. Using this figure you would need about 2,700 square feet to produce 150 pounds of beans, enough for one person for one year.
Would they grow in tropical areas and would they grow in pots?
Yes and Yes!
@@CaliforniaGardening thanks. The articles I've read said they are a cool season crop so I thought they won't grow in the Philippines.
Thank you educational
Glad you liked it!
What time of the year did you grown in your area?
See my monthly gardening series
Nice.
How do you roast the chickpeas; do you have a recipe?
I just roast them on the pan till they are slightly brown
Chickpeas are one of those foods I would have never thought to grow my own. But look how easy and how pretty they are.
Question... Do they require daily watering? I would like to try these in my community garden plot at UCI (same zone as you) but I'm only there 2-3 times per week..
Regarding watering, I water them as I do my other veggies like tomatoes. They are on micro drip sprinklers for 7 minutes a day
chickpeas, lentils, and peas are drought tolerant since they are from the middle east and grew naturally in the deserts and scrublands over there before being domesticated by the Mesopotamians. the roman armies often harvested wild legumes growing in northern Africa and the levant to supplement their rations.
Thank you!
So they’re green then if you roast they change?
They remain green if roasted in the pods
Will it grow in winter season?
No, in spring and fall
Great👍👍
How do you prevent pests
