Hey everyone! Commissioner here! This is my first ever track commission, and boy did Therewolf give me a good first impression!
Paper Mario’s always been one of my most wanted combatants for Death Battle, but I’ve never been a fan of his matchups - most of them just boil down to “Both are made of/live in a world made of arts and crafts.”, like Maxwell or Sackboy, or “Both are alternate versions of a popular character”, like Yarn Kirby or LEGO Sonic (Though Epic Mickey is an okay alt).
Then I saw this MU grow in popularity on the DBM subreddit and…goddamnit, it’s now tied with Morgana VS Daorach for my most wanted MU of all time.
For those who don’t know, Yuu is the protagonist of The Cruel King and The Great Hero. She’s the young human daughter of a deceased hero who lives with her adoptive monster father, The Dragon King. She goes on quests around the world of monsters to help anyone she can, making new friends along the way, all in an effort to defeat the evil Demon King to truly be recognized as a hero like her father was. However, unbeknownst to her, The Dragon King assists Yuu in the shadows, grappling with a secret that Yuu is completely unaware of, which may completely change how she views the final hurdle of her quest.
The connections between the two are lengthy but to simplify it, both are innocent and carefree protagonists of storybook RPGs who wield blunt weapons (Hammers and Swords, which are not sharp, despite their name), both have similar allies; a yellow coward who can dig underground (Professor Toad and Rocky), a reformed bad guy whom they once fought (Vivian and Cybat), and a parasol-wielding princess in pink (Peach and Flora), and both have countless side quests with people around their world (Troubles and Acts Of Kindness). Both are also canonically inside a storybook, and have left their book worlds in crossovers, going to the worlds of other series under the publisher's umbrella (Mario & Luigi and The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince).
Both have saved and have been granted the assistance of spirits from a world above theirs (Star Haven’s Star Spirits granting moves to Mario, and the Fountain World’s Fountain Spirit fusing with Yuu’s father’s sword), and both of their closest royal allies were once used by a third party to reawaken demonic forces that once almost destroyed the entire world (Grodus using Princess Peach as a vessel for the Shadow Queen to take a physical form, and Arthur the spider reattaching The Dragon King’s severed horn to reawaken The Demon King within him). Both heroes defeated this third party before reluctantly fighting their possessed friend, who returned to normal, after the evil was defeated.
Also one is a very vocal and emotional character and the other solely communicates through “👍”.
I figure this fight would take place at the Glitz Pit - the Great Gonzales against Yuu, with Peach and the Dragon King watching, plus a bunch of other folks from both series to allow for fun banter or reactions. (Plus you could do some cool things with Paper Mario doing Stylish Commands to appease the actual crowd to gain SP)
It would start off very goofy, with Yuu’s more basic fighting style bouncing off of all of Paper Mario's crazy badges and Things, but as the fight progresses, Mario and Yuu would see the heroism each other possess through their kindness and the crowds cheering them on, and end the fight by summoning the Star Spirits and Fountain Spirit for a clash between Star Beam and Great Flame Slash, the only thing remaining of the loser being their burnt headwear.
If Mario wins, he lowers his hat and mourns over Yuu’s burnt pot, similar to his reaction after Bobby's death. And if Yuu wins, she’ll burst into tears, getting on her knees and tightly hugging Mario's hat, apologizing to it over and over again.
I think this matchup is the best for both because it can really bring out the emotion of both series, while stuff like Yuu VS Lucas or Paper Mario VS Archie Sonic really only have spectacle and minimal moments that can really connect the opponents on an emotional level, which is what I mostly look for in fights - a dynamic that brings out the best in each opponent.
But, yeah, I really like this matchup! And I'm glad Therewolf made such a great track for it. Great work!
Bro, words cannot describe how thankful I am for you commissioning this. This matchup is so peak 🥲
THANK YOU FOR COMMISIONING IT! THIS MATCHUP IS AMAZING!
Yo thanks so much Nate LMFAOOOOO this is like an early birthday gift for me, track slaps so hard. Luv u man, mu is peak.
@@sacredstars2618 Your blog about this MU was a big inspiration for me to commission, actually, so I'm glad you like it!
I don’t really know who wins but I really like paper Mario so I’m happy. Although him vs epic Mickey is also pretty good
Paper Mario has to fight me, you say?
Goodluck
Love how well it fits the PM battle theme while still carrying the intensity of the other series well, making it sound like a sick boss theme. Absolute Banger
Paper Mario solos with *G I A N T F A N*
Yuu is so close to winning, Paper Mario and lying on the ground, an arm ripped off with red ink coming out, but he just stands up, pulls out an Ultra Shroom Shake and heals up, then a giant fan just comes over the planet
I refuse to be defeated by a loose leaf plumber man!
Wait, is Paper Mario fighting you, or me?
It's yuu
I don’t no personally I’d win
Yooooooo I'm excited for this one mainly cause I have recently got an interest in this matchup
Oh hey, it’s Paper Mario’s best MU. Only wish I knew who Yuu is & what their story is about. But I welcome this MU with open arms. I just wanna see Paper Mario on Death Battle! someday. We’ve gotten Archie Sonic & Silver, Fleetway Sonic in TOC, Xeno/Heroes Trunks, Heroes, Xeno, Capsule Corp & GT Goku so why not Paper Mario? Let’s-a-go!
Basically, you know how every RPG has a hero that wants to defeat the demon king? Yuu is the hero, but the demon king's their dad, and it's actually an adorable relationship. Hijinks and a surprising amount of drama happens.
@@trollman_2345 that’s very interesting ngl
Damn, i sure hope i have some dimensional feats to be up against Paper Mario.
Now that I’ve started playing paper Mario I’m very interested to hear this
I'm loving the jazz music in this track
I’m sure this track will be a PAPER CUT above the rest of your tracks!
Puns aside, always appreciate the work you do! 👍
Ngl, probably one of my favourite lesser known matchups yet, awesome track too!👌
This is going on my top 10 🗿
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOO
MY FAVORITE MATCHUP
Just recently saw your video on the matchup dude! I hope you enjoyed it!
2:12 Damn the juxtaposition between the usual peppy Paper Mario battle music and the music from what I assume to be Cruel King and the Great Hero. I never played the game but I remember seeing a trailer of it for the Switch and I just know that that game has a tragic/sad ending.
It's like that crying Peter Griffin in his car/garage while listening to the radio before the music gets upbeat again and he dances to it.
This is Awesome!
Well Done Therewolf Media :D
Will be a fun death battle
This is great ,a vs match that has one of my favorite characters of all time that includes referencial notes from both origami king and ttyd, nice ,great, excellent and PERFECT
Bro, how is this track THIS fire?!?!?!!
I mean, anything Therewolf makes is pretty fire tbh
I was surprised too! It's too pretty opposite musical styles so I was wondering how Therewolf would find a way to connect them together, but he did such a great job!
some nice heroic battle music!
These heroes are great on paper and looks like a good matchup to witness
I’ve even reacted to this battle music
A match with Paper Mario huh. Yuu better make sure you don't fold the paper too much, that would be tearable Therewolf.
How did you make this sound exactly like an Origami King track? This is so good!
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOO!!!
This right here is the best Paper Mario matchup and it gives Yuu some spotlight, I heard her game is genuenly amazing. I'm still thinking PM wins but it's an absolutely debatable matchup. Great job Therewolf!
How many Paper Mario’s does it take to beat me? About 30 billion.
You guys just refuse to stop putting out bangers, huh? Alright then.
Great job as Always Aaron😁😊👏 i can’t wait for your death battle tracks of either Joker vs Giorno or Bowser vs eggman😁😊

The Outer Haven Mercenaries from the Metal Gear series
Yuu'd think that with a name like that I'd make a joke about pronouns but I'll admit those aren't very funny because they usually only work on paper.
I have no regrets.
I'll admit, upon seeing that matchup my first reaction was to say "who the hell are you ?" out loud at my phone upon reading that second character and franchise. And after listening to the song... Well I still don't have an ounce of an idea who Yuu is or what The Cruel King and the Great Hero is *but* one thing I do know is that this song is really good and that's something I can definitely get behind.
It's pretty standard on paper in the way it's written as a lighthearted heroic song that goes from upbeat to more serious and grand but the way it's done is nonetheless commendable for sure, not to mention that such a way of going about it is more than fitting giving one of the characters is Mario (even if it's Paper Mario specifically) who's basically the poster child for "classic but good" anyways.
And like I said, the way the song's done is more than appreciable either way. Its progression is standard as said before with it beginning very light-heartedly with a Mario-focused segment that then switches into a just-as-upbeat segment that here is actually orchestral to fit what I can only assume is the other character as the song then mixes and matches those two segment types while slowly progressing into something more grand scale and serious as it goes to reflect both characters getting more into the fight and using their more powerful abilities. But before talking about those parts of the song I must give an honorable mention to, as said above, what I assume to be the segments focusing on Yuu (IE: 0:26-0:55) because they're a really well-done mix of standard heroic music mixed in a subtle upbeat theme that makes them sound distinctly, well, heroic but without losing that feeling of joy and adventure which is quite respectable. It sounds like the type of music you'd hear at the start of a Zelda game or something to that extent.
This done I must now cover what essentially amounts to almost the entire second half of the track starting at 2:04 and that's, as said, the more serious and grand scale part of the song which I like even more than the already appreciable first half. It keeps in theme of having a standard heroic yet lighthearted dynamic but the way it goes about doing it is really well done in my opinion. I sounds very "simple", almost like the type of song you'd hear in a children's game but it is very distinctly epic and grandiose, Mario Galaxy type stuff if I were to compare it to something. It's hard to describe exactly when I don't have musical theory knowledge but the way it sounds is so distinct that I'm sure anyone who's had a childhood in the 90s or the 2000s and played video games then will likely get what I mean.
And perhaps even better is the way the song ends too, instead of ending on a perhaps bittersweet tragically heroic note it instead switches back to its very happy and upbeat feeling at 3:10 but this time in a much more over the top way to still convey the scale of the end of this battle but also fit this "childish" (not saying this pejoratively) theming the song has because of course kids watching this theoretical fight wouldn't want their favorite characters to end up dying so I can easily see this ending befitting a finale where both characters don't end up, y'know, killing one another but instead just have one of them accept defeat as they go about their day as friends instead of enemies after having fought. Of course in an actual Death Battle this wouldn't work (unless you're Scooby-Doo VS Courage but don't act like that's usually what happens) but hey, that's the good thing about commissions: you don't have to stick to only one narrative and in this case I think one where neither character dies makes for a cooler and better-fitting scenario.
Overall this track is a nice surprise. Not revolutionary neither in concept nor in execution but still a really solid song that fits the theme of the matchup and the characters (or, well, at least the one that I know somewhat) while just generally sounding really cool with good variations, catchy melodies and a satisfying progression and ending. Pretty much proof that sometimes simplicity is the way to go because it allows for its execution to excel and end up standing out despite its classic idea. Amazing job as always with this.

(The Cruel King And The Great Hero vs Pokèmon)
Oh hey, I am the creator of that matchup!
I would rather it not be advertised in this fashion (mostly because I don’t believe Therewolf Media doesn’t do requests, they do commissions [I am not opposed to commissioning said matchup tho!] But it is cool seeing it here! Even if there is a better track name that reflects both character.
First off, pleasure to meet you
Second, It’s not a request, most people just like to post a few ideas in the comments sometimes for fun
@@triplestarplushtheplushana6840 Ah, understandable! Sorry for the confusion.

Im a "Big Fan" of this ost
Honestly just the best matchup for PM compared to Paper Mario vs Archie Sonic. As for who wins? Idk much about Yuu and there are arguments for and against regarding Multi Paper Mario
Paper Mario sweep? Or does he get put in a shredder
It's debatable but I do think Paper Mario wins
A blog had Yuu win
Yo this matchup is so good. And people still want Archie sonic. I’m sorry but paper Mario vs archie sonic doesn’t bring much to the table other than animation, plus it doesn’t fit archie sonic’s character. There’s adventure Freddy but I would rather have a mu that fits the horror Element of FNAF Like Springtrap Vs Chucky, and epic mickey while interesting isn’t my cup of tea. Yuu however fits paper Mario very well. From connections, to Debate, And Animation, Not to mention this music Slaps! Thanks for a banger Therewolf.
Wonder if mario will be 2-1 or 1-2
The latter
I'm gonna destroy Mario here
Well, this is interesting.
Even though yuu vs skul, and paper mario vs archie sonic are more... interesting, this still vibes, to be honest.
