This may be a little late, but I'll answer it anyway for anyone else wondering. It refers to the number of foundation stitches (or in this case loops) that you need. So if it's n*2, it means that you need an even number of foundation loops. You might encounter some patterns in yarn crafts that are more complex like n*5+2, which means that you need to work your stitches in lots of 5 (until it's your desired width) and then add an additional 2. Hope that makes sense!

For example (pattern #30): n x 8 + 6 The letter "n" represents the number of times you wish to repeat the pattern. Repeating the pattern only once (a swatch) the beginning loop count would be 1 x 8 + 6 = 14 loops. If you wanted a larger piece, let's say double in size, 2 x 8 = 16 + 6 = 22 loops needed to begin.
