I just wanted to say how thankful I am for these videos, I recently got a server running unraid and your videos have been a godsend, keep it up, VERY Much appreciated.
This is such a handy feature. Ive been using Dynamix's S3 Sleep plugin for a while now. My main server has a user script on a schedule to send an etherwake command to my backup server once a week, the Backup server which also runs unraid runs a user script on array startup which backs up important files and zfs snapshots from up my main server. The S3 Sleep plugin is set to stay awake for a couple of hours after wake via the schedule then to shutdown after that provided the network traffic has stopped. This way i can have backups on another machine without having to run it all the time. The main server also has daily backups in a separate zfs pool as well as duplicati running daily encrypted backups to a remote site.
Love your videos. They have been my go to guide for getting my new Unraid server build off the ground. It's safe to say I'm not sure I could have done it without your very thorough videos. :)
Just an observation about the Wake On Lan plugin shown @ 22:38 - it apparently is now deprecated and no longer appears in the APPS page. A workaround is needed to ensure the ETHERWAKE command is available for scripts.
Hi. I'm using dell t620 server as a host to unraid server. Device is located in the basement so s3 sleep is no option for me, long way to go to turn it on. I'm using "expext" script on my router to gracefully shut down server and power it with idrac. Maybe there are better options but it works flawlessly and allows me to save power. (Server works 8 hours in working days and 24/7 at weekends) FYI dell t620 with two e5 low power xeon processors and 6 drives consumes near 120 Wats per hour. I'm planning to replace dell t620 with n100 device and put in in 24/7 working schedule again. Ps: your videos are great. They guide me for years. Thank you for your work. All the best for you.
It's interesting, I have just recently switched over to using my unraid server as a hypervisor and using GPU pass-through as my soul personal computer / gaming PC. So I've run into quite a few hitches with the way unraid implements the VM manager and I wholeheartedly agree with every recommendation you have given so far. I can just imagine how awesome it would be to run an arm CPU virtual machine running Android and being able to use that as perhaps, a set-top box for running Plex Kodi or jelly fin. I'm still very new to using Linux for 100% of my computing so I know there are ways to do it, I'm just not comfortable manually setting that stuff up right now. I currently already have two gpus in my machine, one is the igpu built into my 7950x and the other one is a 3070 TI that I use past through to a Manjaro virtual machine explicitly for gaming and to be used as my normal day-to-day pc. I do have a 1060 that's going to be going in there, I was originally going to use it for transcoding but frankly, this CPU has so many cores and is so fast it's actually faster and better quality to just use the software transcoder anyway. I can easily handle 3 or 4K streams with it so if I'm not going to be using that GPU for transcoding, I have it available for yet another virtual machine and I sure wouldn't mind being able to use it for a little bit more of an off-label use case if you will. As always, love your videos buddy, please keep up the good work. You're the reason why I got into unraid and unraid is the reason why I got into Linux in general and I couldn't be more thankful. ❤
Thank you for the amazing videos! I do have a question though. When changing the settings for the s3 sleep plugin, does it mean that the plugin will automatically sleep the system and not wake it back up? I assuming that's the case because you provided your userscript that wakes at a set time. I'd love to hear your answer. Thank you! Edit: I forgot to ask, since you can put a custom command in the settings, would using your script or rtcwake still activate that command?
Love the video. I thought i had everything set up right, but i was in my windows VM when it triggered. When i turned it back on it gets stuck on the boot... Its and ASUS motherboard and i was checking for the ACPI, but I don't see it. I would hate to have to reflash the USB drive just to get it back up. Any help would be great. (Thankfully this is my testing rig)
Hi Ed, I'd love to see how you set up your n100 as your always on server and how you get all your media is synced/setup with your main servers. I too have a main server, backup server and n100 and would like to do the same.
Yes I love my N100. Video will be very soon and I will share my script which sync only the newest Media and remove old media so drives dont become full. (My media goes from main server to backup server and new media to n100)
My PC won't turn back on after running RTC wake command or when I have the RTC alarm setup it requires a manual press on the power button to come back on from sleep. Does ErP need to be disabled? Or is there something else that may be causing this?
Hi, I use plex for my family on my unraid server. Is there a way to set the server to s3 Sleep but wake on plex activity / requests..... Just a thought ?
I haven't tried this myself, I use Emby whose client doesn't support sending a wol packet but I believe the Plex client doesn't support this either. I dont know why Plex/Emby clients on a local network don't send Wake-on-LAN packets if it cant detect the server?? But you could try, and set your nic to respond to unicast packets using ethtool. The command would be ethtool -s eth0 wol u, assuming your nic is named eth0. This might enable your Plex server to wake up when a client attempts to connect. However, it would probably get false wakeups too :(
Great Video! I was wondering how you incorporate the WOL in your custom tabs? also is it possible to somehow use the link through Unraid connect? (So far I haven't been successful)
I am experiencing a an odd issue, i have a smartplug that's disconnect when the unraid server is not responding ping so i can save more energy. You mentioned you did the same. It basically powerroff screens and two extra powered usb hubs. The server turns to sleep mode fine but when the smartplug is powered off it also awake the server...
Hi sir, first of all thank you for the video. Just that as a non-english person living in Asia, it's hard to understand a bit what's that robots are saying. I need to be extra focus just to understand what it is saying. Hope you can fine tune it or remove it. I enjoy all of your video and it helps me a lot. Thanks!
Having a problem with the Dynamix S3 plugin, server sleeps, but upon waking it states my flash drive is corrupted, key file missing, and now it states that its blacklisted… i have literally only bought a key three days ago….
On my system (and plenty of others on the forum), the plugin's HDD activity detection was completely busted on unRAID 6.12.X. I quit putting the system to sleep because of it. I guess it's still working for some people? The plugin hasn't been updated since March.
so, once again, top tutorial. did it all and it's working just fine with waking it from my phone. The thing is, if i'm out of home, and that happens, how can i reach the ip of the server if it's the serve that gives me connection to home, with Wireguard? To make my quastion clear, if the server sleeps, and next morning i'm out of home, i can't wake it because i have no way to connect to the lan ... Any sollution? Thank you! ps: i have my pc disconnected when i'm not at home so i can't use it to wake the server.
Set up another low power machine and install wireguard on it, maybe utilize your router's VPN? How about call your wifi and ask her to turn it on for ya
Hi Ed, great video as always! Following your video, I got the sleep part to work but cannot wake it from my Mac (using miniWOL or WakeOnCommand). I am using an HPE microserver Gen8 and the latest unRAID OS, I remember you had a bunch of these servers in your power consumption video - have you tried this on those servers? WOL is turned on in BIOS but I can't see anything related to PCIE Power as you mentioned. I am using eth0 and with the ethtool eth0 command, the option is set to "g". I also found out that by default my built-in NICs are "bonded" (not sure if this makes a difference?); but I have tried "un-bond" them in SETTINGS > Network Settings, restarted the machine and still can't WOL. Can you (or anyone) help please? Cheers!
Amazing video! My Unraid machine wouldn't sleep on schedule for some reason until I removed both Nvidia Shield IP addresses from the 'wait for host inactivity' section. Both devices are off/standby mode, but for some reason it just wouldn't sleep. I checked their network activity in Unifi, and it's very low but never 0 up and down - any ideas?
Not 100% sure, but could be related to the shield just staying on the entire time. Maybe you need to enable the CEC settings on the TV to tell the shield to turn off. I dont own a shield TV anymore but considering that he said that the plug in pings the devices, you could try using the ping command in the unraid console to see if it still sees the devices until you finally get the right configuration where when it turns off, it's actually off. or at the very least, not responding to pings.
I got my WOL working and also scheduled sleep S3. But after like 50mins or so, i cant WOL unraid anymore and have to physically press the power button. I cant find any ErP settings or similar in BIOS. I got a n100 mini pc from Cwwl which has actually a ton of settings available in bios but my assumption is, that the NIC is going to a sort of sleep mode still even when in S3. Anyone experiencing the same? I could use RTC for a daily wake up before my backup is running but i also use smb shares which i want to access during the day sometimes, so waking up when needed is essential basically... Been looking for a solution for days now but have a feeling that i will have manually wake up :-/
@SpaceinvaderOne hey ed your Videos are amazing!!! They helped me a lot With my unraid Server. When i follow your Guide all works Fine but 1 Problem is there. I have installed a mellanox x3 Card. When i wake up the Server eth0 Shows up but the Mellanox Card the Port is After wake up is down. What can i do After Wake up that the port is up?
So the rtc wake command will first put the server to sleep when the script is run and than wake it up at the set time ? Can we configure it like this wol ( s3 sleep plugin) will put the server to sleep and than rtc wake does the job of only waking up the server ?
hi. i've enable wake on lan through the terminal ethtool -s eth0 wol g. it work. but after it boots it went back to Wake-on: d ( disable ) and i had to enable it again . how do i keep it enable after reboot?
Thank you for all your videos. I have enabled wake on lan in bios, installed s3 plugin. Checked eth0 and is on ''g''. Tested sleep, by pressing sleep, then used app on phone to send magic packetand it works. However after an hour or more being in sleep , i'm unable to wake with magic packet?
Um that is strange. One thing that jumps to mind is your network switch. Some have energy efficient Ethernet features that reduce power or even disable ports that appear inactive. This maybe happening in your case so the packet then doesnt reach the servers nic due to the switch port being inactive?
@@SpaceinvaderOne thank you for your reply. I managed to get it working. I setup WOL on my opnsense router and has woken server 2 days in a row. Also I did set the RTC clock for 5 mins later than my opnsense WOL cron, as a backup of waking it up. Thank you again. Have a nice Christmas 🎄
What do you do if you have a 10GB nic as eth0 and you have eth1 as a on board 1GB nic that supports WOL? Do you assign an UP or just use a WOL cmd in terminal to point to the 1GB nic mac id? Obviously you wouldn't want bonding on?
I have both connected, assign static IP's and send the WOL to the 1GB nic (the one that supports WOL). However, I also needed to set static IP and the 'metric' in settings-network (the lower the metric, the higher the priority). If I don't do this, my system will assign a lower metric to the 1GB port and traffic will be routed via that nic.
Your vids are amazing ty. Do you know if there are any ways to trigger S3 via command line or script? Or any solution that can be automated in an external script? Thanks 🤘
Rtc wake script require server to be active/ not asleep , so if s3 sleep plugin puts the server to sleep will rtc wake script if scheduled will wake the asleep server which is put to sleep by s3 plugin?
No rtc wake has to be the thing that puts the server to sleep. So if you want the server to goto sleep at a certain time such as mignight, you would use a userscript to run rtc wake at this time. The rtc wake would then wake the server after however long it was set for eg 8 hours
No you would not use sleep in that case on a virtualized system. Just set your disk setting in Unraid /settings/disk settings set the "Default spin down delay" to 15 mins or however long you want there to be in activity before the drives are spun down. I assume on your proxmox you are passing through an hba which the disks are connected to so this should work fine saving power when disks are inactive.
What to do if i can put to Sleep my Unraid server perfectly normal and when i send Magic Packet, it wakes up but nothing more happens, i can hear that everything like fans, hard disks are spinning and starting but nothing more. On my router I cant see that my server wakes up. I thought that was my sound card that i bought, that makes that problem, but when i physicaly disconnect it from motherboard, problem still exists, earlier everything was normal. Please help because i dont know what to do :(
If server was in sleep mode and power went out server would stay on until battery run down on UPS. But the server should only be using a few watts when in sleep so battery should last a while. But when UPS battery was fully flat server would just go off (unclean shutdown)
I will have a video soon on my n100. But i bought it as mini PC designed for pfSense from Aliexpress. It has four 2.5gb intel nics. 32 gig ddr5 ram and one nvme drive. Cost me about $250
Samba is preventing the sleep. Got an idea on how to resolve that? Dec 17 11:04:54 Server kernel: Freezing of tasks failed after 20.004 seconds (1 tasks refusing to freeze, wq_busy=0): Dec 17 11:04:54 Server kernel: task:smbd state:D stack:0 pid:18120 ppid:12668 flags:0x00004006
Um thats strange it cant freeze the system due to samba. Heres what you can try. Before sleep restart the samba service this may then allow for the system to go into sleep correctly. In the s3 sleep plugin you can run command before sleep so use this line /etc/rc.d/rc.samba restart that will restart the server before sleep. You could even stop the service before sleep with /etc/rc.d/rc.samba stop then use the command for when it wakes /etc/rc.d/rc.samba start to start when it comes out of sleep. However this will only work from the s3 sleep plugin. if not using this to sleep the server you would have to manually put these commands in or script it. Hope this helps
Ah didnt know that. Personally my TV, shield and Amp all power off as they are integrated into Home Assistant. I have zigbee buttons which when toggled turns all the power on/off for those devices usingTasmota smart plugs. I have these buttons for main audio video and the bedroom audio video I find very convenient.
Hello ed sir , hope you and your family doing well , sir it's my request to make a unraid video on Private GPT ( on GitHub) or any Open LLM model with nvidia GPU support on unraid so we unraiders can use chat gpt like features on unraid on docker in apps tab . Thanks

thank you! please consider doing a video on how to set up unraid to ensure clean shut-downs and reboots
Unraid should shutdown and restart okay. If you are having issues with unclean shutdowns try installing the Dynamix Stop Shell plugin. This may help

No rtc wake has to be the thing that puts the server to sleep. So if you want the server to goto sleep at a certain time such as mignight, you would use a userscript to run rtc wake at this time. The rtc wake would then wake the server after however long it was set for eg 8 hours
@@SpaceinvaderOne but how can I wake up the server from the s3 sleep plugin? I tried "rtcwake -m no -n -t $time_to_wakeup" but it does not wake up.
If the Unraid server is a virtual server hosted into Proxmox, would it be possible to make the Unraid server and its disks get into sleep mode?
Please help because i dont know what to do :(
Thats weird. Maybe the server isnt setting a dhcp lease when it wakes. maybe set the ip as static for the server in the Unraid GUI if it isnt already?
Hi Ed. How does It integrate with the UPS? 🤔 if power goes out.
If server was in sleep mode and power went out server would stay on until battery run down on UPS. But the server should only be using a few watts when in sleep so battery should last a while. But when UPS battery was fully flat server would just go off (unclean shutdown)
Could you elaborate on what your 12w N100 machine is please?....Is it a pre-built or DIY? Thanks
I will have a video soon on my n100. But i bought it as mini PC designed for pfSense from Aliexpress. It has four 2.5gb intel nics. 32 gig ddr5 ram and one nvme drive. Cost me about $250
@@SpaceinvaderOneany chance you can share the ali express link Ed?
Samba is preventing the sleep. Got an idea on how to resolve that?
Dec 17 11:04:54 Server kernel: Freezing of tasks failed after 20.004 seconds (1 tasks refusing to freeze, wq_busy=0):
Dec 17 11:04:54 Server kernel: task:smbd state:D stack:0 pid:18120 ppid:12668 flags:0x00004006
Um thats strange it cant freeze the system due to samba. Heres what you can try. Before sleep restart the samba service this may then allow for the system to go into sleep correctly. In the s3 sleep plugin you can run command before sleep so use this line /etc/rc.d/rc.samba restart
that will restart the server before sleep.
Well that sucks, just realized my Epyc doesn't support S3. Time for a new build lol
look at the studies.. your equipment will last alot longer if you keep it running :( I can only assume its do to materials thermal properties
13:50 Nvidia Shield dont turn off, they go into standby, in standby you can ping them and get a responce.
Thanks
Yes i think some AI videos would be fun to make and get working on Unraid. I'll see what i can do in the New Year :)
New nextcloud guide please
Nextcloud All In One guide will be soon :)
@@SpaceinvaderOne amazing, linkstation on the way
1:25 so it doesn't get hacked. Can't hack a server if it's turned off!
Hey thats true :)
Great topic but really not liking the inclusion of generative AI content in your videos lately. Enough of that on trash social media pages, don't need it creeping in here too. Makes the videos feel tacky IMO
