I just wanted to thank you for going to this graveyard in Dumfries Scotland. It just so happens that some of my ancestors are buried there, you did show two of them.. a William Grierson and Robert Burns. I also have ancestors at Ruthwell Churchyard (Graveyard), Dumfries/Annan. I have been a fan and subscriber of yours for awhile and to see St. Michael's in Dumfries come up just blew my mind, so thank you. I hope to see it for myself one day, it is beautiful.
To dust we turn, we must, Leave my skull, take the rust, My head don't take, Lest your fine hat break, 'pon my voluminous pate, Out!! and close the gate, Think not to return, Or face the ghost of 'Rabbie' Burns.
Wow....I wouldn't even know where to start and where to end...here in Germany everything is in a row...you can just walk it down...and there it looks like it's randomly parked there...Absolutely impressive...I love this...😍
love these vids i love sitting here with a nice Yorkshire tea brew and chilling and watching the diffrent designs of graves and there history and people who belong to the graves
This is an excellent channel this is. Definition of contemporary "living or occurring at the same period of time." So those people lived at the same period of time a Burns and may have or may have not known him.
My great uncle fought with 1st battalion 5th regiment Dumfries and galloway outfit. Sgt George Thomson. Hamilton near Glasgow have erected a memorial for him in their town center.
Hi there, I just subscribed to your channel. I've been watching it for the last few days. I love walking through cemeteries and wondering what the people were like and the stories they could tell us of their lives
In essence, contemporaries are peers or equals existing or occurring in the same period of time Yes, the skull and crossbones symbol on an old gravestone does have significant meaning. It is a symbol consisting of a human skull and two long bones crossed together under or behind the skull. The design originated in the Late Middle Ages as a symbol of death and especially as a memento mori on tombstones. “Memento mori” is a Latin phrase that translates to “remember you must die”, serving as a reminder of our own mortality and the inevitability of death. The skull and crossbones are probably the oldest mortality symbols found on Scottish graveyards. Often an hourglass is combined with the skull and crossbones to signify time running out, or a winged death’s head also indicating that life is fleeting.
Thanks for this, we just spent a couple of nights near Dumfries, did the JM Barrie house and walked down the Main Street and saw the refurbished water fountain but sadly had to get back up to the other side just before Burns Street with his house then onto this cemetery as my MS was being a bugger with the old legs! 🤦🏻♀️☠️👌🏻
Thank you, Dan. Such a relaxing tour as usual. Please try and carry a small snack like nut-seed protein bars that'll do in a pinch. I'm from Bengal 😅 my ancestors, rather. James Hills's gravestone was very cleverly edited if you notice the word 'unwearied.'
Thank you for showing us around another interesting cemetery. I didnt know anything about Burns Mausoleum being broken into for his skull. Its certainly jam packed. Good walk!
Great video! Unusual grave stones…with 6 plinths, I guess they may have been the fashion at that time for graves. Some well known local people buried there what an interesting place! Love the inscriptions on the grave stones….old English terminology! Thank you for sharing this!
Beautiful graveyard here. So sad that people break into places. Lovely walk though and seems peaceful. I love Robert Burns for my wedding I sang a poem of his.
Wow! That is the most amazing cemetery I’ve ever seen. And the oldest looking one too. I could spend all day there. It makes me think of my Father and Mother and brother. I’m going to cast this video onto my 65” TV. That place is going to be really crowded at the 2nd resurrection, when everyone comes up from their graves!
Great video Dan and enjoyed the walk. So while you were in Scotland did you get any Walker cookies? That are those butter cookies there. Just to get the tin from there would be nice. Thank you again for sharing take care Dan .
Hey there you might not make a lot of money but what a interesting job you do it’s fantastic and enjoyable I know it’s morbid to lots of people but it’s history it’s what really happened thank you for sharing ❤
What a wonderfully atmospheric cemetery. I realise everyone is supposed to worship Robert Burns and therefore the cemetery has to revolve around him, but I think it a very great pity that some graves have those garish vivid blue plaques added. It diminishes their lives, turning them into mere contemporaries of RB when they are so much more than that. The plaques spoil the appearance of the graves and highlight RB instead of the person who is buried there. If you don’t think so, don’t hang me for having a different opinion. 18:00
Hello from Texas. What are the short tables throughout the cemetery? I’m assuming either benches for visitors or part of the gravesite. Thanks for another interesting walkthrough!🪦👻
Hey there, a great day for a walk!! Not 2 B insulting or anything but why do so many stone structures in UK have either black mold, mosses or green lichens covering them? Don’t you guys use pressure washers & cleaning compounds to refresh public buildings, Churches, Stone walls, etc.. seems like you just want to keep everything old, ancient, crumbly & dirty looking. Maybe to keep from possibly damaging them I don’t know but I’ve been cleaning my great grandparents stones with mild soap, hard plastic scraper, a brass brush & portable sprayer that keeps them clean, mold & lichen free & doesn’t damage the stone. By the way, your Churches are magnificent. Always envied your history.
You may have to get permission to do so from living descendants….can be a bit involved tracking them down…all depends on the church rules, as I imagine if “any” damage was done by use of abrasive liquids or brushes, then the church may be legally viable….I don’t know, but lately down south where stones have been leaning, they have removed them to one side after trying to locate family to do something about it. The church fears the stones falling on a child or someone, and being taken to court. It’s all got very silly in Gt Britain to my mind…lawyers are making a pile! They take chestnut trees that have been standing 100’s years down, which line the roads school children walk alongside, “just in case a child gets injured by falling conkers!! Absolutely b….y ridiculous! When I was a child we would climb these lovely trees to shake the branches for the conkers to fall! Great fun threading onto string for conker matches…but I have no doubt even that very old, pleasurably past time is disallowed these days….when I think of how long these trees have stood quietly growing, how many generations have enjoyed the conkers…and now it’s a crazy place to live…no hopscotch even, in case a child falls!I had a fantastic childhood…great fun, going out to play until dusk with friends,,it’s so sad that times have changed so much..freedom curtailed. My generation were the lucky ones! Thankyou Dan….that was fascinating! Hope your leg recovers soon! Best wishes! 🙋♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I guess if you wanna be the head stone cleaner a pressure washer and a stone cleaner and pave cleaner stuff should clean them back to it's original look, to me i rather clean where their names are so everyone can read who, why and when.
It's a shomaker's convention in there...lol. They must have needed a lot of shoes in that town. I'll admit, I had to look up what a 'nith' was and I assume it refers to a river?
I don't know why, but I think all those tall bulky monuments are ugly? Really enjoyed the rest of your maze like walkabout, and thanks for reading a few for us. Deb of Oz.
May be l missed it... But did you find the mass grave from the 1833 cholera epidemic, which claimed the lives of 420 from Dumfries? They are all interred within St Micheals kirkyard.

Great walk-about Dan. Sorry I got in late. Beautiful cemetery for Scotland. Thank you for bringing it to us!
No worries Janet. Glad you made it

Ive had a few different occupations but have been a machinist for the past 20 years. Probably what I will do for the rest of my life

What a beautiful old cemetery 😊😊

Wow the way they packed the stones in reminds me of puzzles or some such. Thanks for another great walk.
Another beautiful walk. I enjoy your channel so much.
Enjoyed the vid. Contemporary does not mean friend. A persons friend is a contempotary but all contemporaries are not friends.
Apparently Burns wrote an ode to a Haggis which you read to the haggis before you eat it.
My great uncle fought with 1st battalion 5th regiment Dumfries and galloway outfit. Sgt George Thomson. Hamilton near Glasgow have erected a memorial for him in their town center.

Hi, that’s how I feel too. Hope life will be blissfully happy for you. God bless.
Dude, You take your scull for a walk every time you go out 😂
😂😂☠️
Somebody is taking very good care of the cemetery grounds. 👍
Fascinating! I love your work and walks!
You find the most interesting cemetery’s! This is one of your best! Thanks for the walk!
Cheers from Indiana USA
I don't know how I missed this video. I went to your channel to see if I had missed any. This graveyard is so unique. Loved the walk
TH-cam is so annoying sometimes, I'm glad you caught up Bee

I really enjoy your videos, thank you so much!
Thank you Cynthia
Find a Grave says. Eleanor Miller from Bengal who died June 9th 1783 aged 7 years
Awesome video!❤️
I think contemporary just means someone who lived at the same time
I worked the same job for 42 years before retirement this summer.
oh wow. Hope you're enjoying it so far
Oh yes, I worked in a nursing home so mental as well as physical stress.
Contemporaries is like peers.
So great that you always come up here to Scotland as well - welcome 😊

What a beautiful place! You're right and it does remind me of Greyfriars Kirkyard a bit!
Your videos are SO fascinating!!!
Even though beautiful grave yards are wasting spaces.
Coool mate will watch this one later
lovely place. growing up , had a friend that lived next to the cemetery in town....she hated it, I would have loved it!
Can you also give your focus on locks and padlocks on graveyards? There in some cases has to be at least an old Chubb padlock or something antique.
Hey there you might not make a lot of money but what a interesting job you do it’s fantastic and enjoyable I know it’s morbid to lots of people but it’s history it’s what really happened thank you for sharing ❤
Don’t put yourself down ❤
A contemporary is someone who was alive around the same time
What a wonderfully atmospheric cemetery.

Thank you for another great video! Hope your leg is better, don’t trip over the tombstones!
If a monument in the cemetary falls down, do the inhabitants hear it? 😂
Hello from Texas. What are the short tables throughout the cemetery? I’m assuming either benches for visitors or part of the gravesite.
Thanks for another interesting walkthrough!🪦👻
Spot on videos
I love your walks. They really are interesting. 😊
Apparently the same sort of thing happened to the skull of the great Austrian composer Josef Haydn?
"They grew up to be women" probably refers to the fact that they reached adulthood rather than dying young like their brothers did.
Beautiful. What a beautiful mausoleum of Robert Burns, but a scary story. Thanks for the walk. Martha
Glad you enjoyed it Martha
16:31 I'm definitely naming my New Romantic band, The Baguette Cherubs 😂
Cherishes your time... and explore the history mysteries.
Absolutely !
You only live once. As far as I known. But I am a stroke survivor.
Hey 👋 Dan and chat and Cathy
St.Michael' s now,,, but for many hundreds of years the area was a grave site ...It is estimated there are over 80, thousand bodies in there ..
You should be packing a lunch for your walks!
Always unprepared :(
I have ancestors in the graveyard 🐨😃
If I ever could see a video of you on time to the house 🏡 would shake 😂😂❤❤ Thankyou
Bedankt
Bedankt! Your continued support really helps Martha x
You’re welcome I enjoy doing it. Martha

Hi Dan
Why are there benches all over?
Oh my gosh… “It’s not that cold, it’s about 12 degrees” 😳 That’s a cold winters day in QLD 🥴🤣 Tess
For those of us in Canada, 12 degrees in the winter would be lovely 😉
I would LOVE to visit Canada, the scenery looks absolutely outstanding! I would totally just suck up being cold!! 🥰
It's a shomaker's convention in there...lol. They must have needed a lot of shoes in that town. I'll admit, I had to look up what a 'nith' was and I assume it refers to a river?
Can’t you spray wash the grease off the cement from the highway. Time to clean stone no cemetery too expensive to bury grease and freeway dirt!!!!😢
Impressive
I don't know why, but I think all those tall bulky monuments are ugly? Really enjoyed the rest of your maze like walkabout, and thanks for reading a few for us. Deb of Oz.

Nope
