"Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara) was the legendary leader of the Uchiha clan. He founded Konohagakure alongside his childhood friend and rival, Hashirama Senju, with the intention of beginning an era of peace. When the two couldn't agree on how to achieve that peace, they fought for control of the village, a conflict which ended in Madara's death. Madara, however, rewrote his death and went into hiding to work on his own plans. I feel people don't appreciate Madara enough, they like him for the broken character he was or hate him without understanding his ideas.
Madara was no hero but he also was no villain, he didn't pursue immortality, he didn't want to conquer the world or anything.
When Young, Madara wanted to create a safe home for his brother, just like Hashirama. When Izuna died, he fought Hashirama and lost.
He accepted the hand Hashirama gave him, a path to peace between their clans. Both of them created the hidden leaf TOGETHER.
Madara was the one who named the village.
Madara invited Hashirama into the Naka Shrine (Stone tablet) and showed him the tablet, Hashirama was the only person who wasn't an Uchiha but actually saw the tablet. (Kabuto and Orochimaru are not included).
Madara was asked to become the first Hokage by Hashirama, but Tobirama (Motherfucker) and then maybe others voted for Hashirama.
He EQUALLY contributed to the village but his demeanour automatically scarred people away.
Other villages were also created as they followed hidden leaf.
Everything went well until Madara felt the sudden shift in power. He knew that after Hashirama retires, Tobirama would be selected as the next Hokage by the council, he foresaw Tobirama isolating the Uchiha clan and tried to warn his clan, unfortunately, they didn't head his words as they were busy enjoying the temporary happiness of being in the village.
The tensions between villages started to grow as the different villages started competing for resources.
Madara could envision the future, wars between villages to compete for resources.
He understood the fact the rather than fighting each other as a clan, they were just going to fight as villages, the cycle of pain and death would not stop and will continue on.
The safe future he envisioned, the peace he envisioned was all temporary, what would happen with he and Hashirama died? What will stop the other villages to wage wars after their deaths?
He knew that this would go back to the Warring States period, the peace would once again be devoured by war and greed of humans.
Black Zetsu utilized the seed of doubt within Madara's mind and manipulated him using the stone tablet.
Madara's envisioning was indeed right! Other than the war he himself waged, the different villages did fight 4-wars? (It's been some time since I last watched Naruto after the series ended.)
Knowing he was right, he left the village to pursue his ideals, the true peace, unfortunately, his ideas were already infected by the wrong Tablet, making his vision twisted.
Thus he did what he did, he wanted peace, true FUCKING peace. Something which can only be achieved in a dream. Ask yourself this, when Naruto series ended, and Baruto series started, was it all peaceful? Was there no more suffering? Were people not killed?
What Hashirama envisioned could never bring true peace cause an ideal world doesn't exist.
"In this world, wherever there is light - there are also shadows. As long as the concept of winners exists, there must also be losers. The selfish desire of wanting to maintain peace causes wars and hatred is born to protect love." -Uchiha Madara
Was Madara wrong to dream for peace? Sure it would have come at a price but who is innocent? Did Hashirama didn't kill? Did Jiraiya didn't kill? Or does killing one person and killing more than one person different things?
Put yourself in his shoes, what he faced and went through and tell me you want to live in the accursed world?
For a moment forget that Otosuki is a thing and think yourself.
For me, Madara was an Idealist and Extremist, what he wanted to achieve was "good" but how he achieved it was "bad".
For example -At Shaolin temple, small children are trained with such training that it can be regarded as "bad" but when they grow up into master of their art, they are regarded as "good".
People often say that Madara used Nine-tails to fight against Hashirama that's why he was able to match him, Let me ask you a question.
If Naruto wasn't a Jinchuriki, would he become who he is now?
If Hashirama didn't have Sage-Mode, are you certain he would have defeated Madara?
If Sasuke didn't have curse-mark power then Sage-of-Six path power, would he be who he is?
Madara captured Nine-tails through his own effort and power, Madara was stronger than Hashirama in Chakra-count, the number of techniques, taijutsu, brain, his EMS power (Time-Rewind probably), Izanagi and Izanami.
He did lose to Hashirama when he fought him the first time he awakened his EMS, given he wasn't used to its powers or plot crap.
Now I am not saying who is stronger or who is weak but STOP being a hypocrite, I like both Madara and Hashirama, I don't hate any of them, I don't think that one of them is a saint while other is a devil.
You say Madara stole Hashirama gene for power then let me tell you this, Rinnegan can only be unlocked by both of their chakras, I personally don't think that Madara needs Hashirama's gene to win against others in a fight.
You say he has Sage-mode, does he need it? I don't think so, but to become a true sage, he NEED to have all these powers.
I like Madara as a person with strong ideals and someone who is willing to understand the reason behind his philosophy.
Madara was just a man with a dream.

Edit:-I forgot to add the fact that it was Kabuto who added Hashirama cells into Mandara, not Madara himself, he only took the flesh to awaken Rinnegan, he couldn't use Wood-style or fast regeneration.

The issue is the way he went about making that goal reality.

No a lot of what he does makes sense when you go back and look at everything he was never insane he put all of that on as an act to keep naruto and Sakura away so they didn’t follow him down his path of vengeance and because he didn’t want to hold a relationship with anyone and the only times he really changes his mind is when he’s given a lot or very world changing information like that his brother who he considered the literally walking embodiment of evil was actually an amazing person and always acted for the greater good of the leaf and of sasuke
