KTM Heated Grips

- Fitting KTM Powerparts heated grips to Moose. The manual was pretty easy to follow apart from the pictures being in black and white and not stating which colour wires to connect at one point. Other than that I was only held up by a stripped torque locking screw on original left side grip which took a bit of force to remove.
I was under the impression that these were dealer fit only, but it turns out that the guys on the front desk were assuming this to be the case because that's what is required on the 1290 Super Duke.
Thanks for the Video, I installed mine today. Your note about the wire colours solved my troubleshooting issue. It took me longer than I expected. lol
Electrics are voodoo to me. I'm totally clueless. So KTM throwing different colours into the mix than everyone else uses threw me a curveball too.
Glad that it was useful Paul 👍🏼
@@CampbellZeroOne I hear you with the electrics. I even got ballsy and made a Y splitter so I could connect the USB charger and the heated grips on the ACC2. Simple for many but new territory for me! lol
@@paultaylorduke Good effort 👌🏼
Never done so much to a bike before. Been a real steep learning curve. Still, there's lots that I'll never attempt. Some things are best left to the pros.
@@CampbellZeroOne this is my first bike, I’m planning on doing a tire change and sprockets/chain this summer. It gets pretty pricey having the dealer do everything. (Fingers crossed it goes well.)
@@paultaylorduke Yeah? Great choice of first bike in that case. I was daft and went for supesports bikes initially, and they are a different beast. Especially my R6s. They needed to be ridden high up in the rev range to work properly. Built for racing so did not really suit the roads around here at more sensible speeds.
The 790/890 are really versatile bikes and tick lots of boxes but are still very sporty and nimble. Not one trick ponies for sure.
Great video, just fitted heated grips on my KTM 790 Duke. Your video was a great help, as you point out the instruction for the final connections are unclear and if you get then the wrong way round the grips will work but the neon lights on the control unit won't work.
Thanks for the feedback John. That's exactly what I use TH-cam for as well. If you don't know how to approach something it's probably on here somewhere!
As usual, an excellent vid. So glad I found your channel. Whilst I have the 890, I am sure the procedure is the same. I'll probably go with the Koso grips and attach to the stock connectors. I would rather have the integrated look that they provide rather than have a big temp controller hanging off the handlebar. Even living in a warm area of the US, I still find its nice to have heated grips.
Thanks Wavshrdr Agreed, you can't go wrong with heated grips on an early morning run👍🏼
Fantastic, thorough video. Saved me at 2 critical points! Thanks!
Good job explaining how to fit. Looks straightforward, I'd rather do it than let the dealer so this is helpful, thanks.
More than welcome. Only reason that I did it was because my Power Parts have all arrived so late and doing it myself saved a six hour round trip. As with most things though, it'll be less of a thought the next time that I have to do it.
Rob Campbell Just watching another video off yours and you came from a triple, which one?
@@HeadhunterUK007 I had a Triumph Street Triple R then an MV Agusta Dragster (which I just sold yesterday 😥) It's in a couple of older videos if you go back far enough. Did an exhaust comparison on it too.
Thanks for adding this video, I'm sure it's going to help me fit a secondhand pair of grips I've just bought.
Keep on riding👍🌞
You're welcome Harvey. Check A.D's comment below first as he has added a link for the official instructions pdf which I didn't have at the time. It'll help avoid any issues with throttle play.
Thanks for watching 😉👍🏼
Oh man, thank you so much for this!! Also that go pro mount on the old mirror spot is an incredible idea, I am going to have to steal that. Let me know if you had to buy any specific parts to make that work.
Just a bolt I had laying around and black paint. Bored out the holes on a GoPro mount. Job done.
KTM _and_ a proper MINI... same as me :) thanks for the instructions, it cut down the installation time a bit for me...
Great video! I just bought one of these and plan to install it when Spring comes about. I am wondering though, I also have a USB Power port that I want to attach to the front. Are there 2 x Accessory 2 connectors behind the light?
I also read that when the heat selector is flashing, the grips are on rapid heat for 4 minutes, then it turns to normal heat when the light is steady. If you hit the select button when it flashes, it turns off rapid heating.
Thanks for the vids. Really enjoying them.
Hey there Normand. Thanks for watching. Yes, it was ages ago that I made this video. But if I remember correctly there are two behind the headlight. Think there's one that is always live and one that goes live once the ignition is on.
My USB is connected under my seat though. It was done by the dealer during a service as the USB was put on back order from when I ordered the bike. It's always live, although given the choice I'd have preferred to have had it work only when the ignition is on but wasn't asked. Never had any issues with that setup, but it only needs me to be careless once and I'm stranded!
Rob - great video and job almost complete. I had no instructions so one quick question if you can recall ? Does it matter which connector mates up to the Left Hand grip connector ? Thanks in advance and once again really helpful videos.
Pretty sure that there's not a right or wrong way to connect those Jeremy, as they are either off/on and not controlled individually.
A.D. commented below a few weeks back and copied in the official KTM pdf for download (which I didn't have either) and your issue is on Page 11. Just plugs in with no mention of anything to avoid. He also pointed out why there's a zip tie in the pack for the cable on the throttle side (also page 11) So I'll be sorting that myself over the winter.
The pdf is much clearer than the photocopied paperwork that came with my kit, so easier to make out any detail.
Have fun 😉👍🏼
Thanks rob - correct, works either way. All the best 👍
I fitted Oxford heated grips to my Kawasaki Versys and used an epoxy glue mixture to trigger the properties. Rock solid adhesive. The Kwaka was not throttle-by-wire though.
I've seen epoxy glues being used. Powerful stuff isn't it. Super permanent solution though. I may put Moose back to standard if I ever upgrade to an 'R' so being able to reuse stuff is essential. Thanks for watching and commenting 😉👍🏼
@@CampbellZeroOne I agree with your re-use ability as long as the glue used will not slip at the most inconvenient time. In hot weather, when your bike has been soaking in the sun, grips expand and the contact to the handle bar can fail. You can slice off the grips in the future with a Stanley blade if you want to upgrade.
@@ScragNath Absolutely no chance of that happening here in Scotland 😉😂😂😂🌧💦❄
Just about to fit these so your vid has come in very handy thanks! I will fit the usb socket too, Im guessing the socket for that is in the same place. Thanks again
Yep, the USB on my bike is also connected behind the headlight Billy. If you look below at the comments A.D. pointed out a small mistake on the throttle side of things. Keeps you safe. I had a basic photocopy at the time so was having to figure things out myself.
Hope the vid helps, and thanks for watching 👍🏼
@@CampbellZeroOne Excellent. thanks.
Hi great Video could you answer one question re the actual controller. it has the 2 small wires and a white plug as well . do you plug in the white plug to AC2 plug as well as the main plug on the grips as well? bit confused basically you have to plug into bike with 2 white plugs and small wires as well,
Nigel, do you have an email address that I can send a pdf to? It was a couple of years ago that I put these on so I'm a bit foggy. The new pdf is quite clear compared to the photocopy that I got. If it's of no help, just get back to me and I'll see what I can do.
Campbell Zero One thanks nnspoljaric@gmail.com
@@nigelspoljaric8363 On its way! Thanks for watching 😉👍🏼
Thanks for the great video!
Hi mate, I fitted an akrapovic slip on and a k&n filter but my 790 wasn't happy at all, coughing and spluttering, I've put back to standard and fitted the booster plug, can't really see a difference if I'm honest, somebody mentioned software upgrade, what do you think? Cheers in advance
Hi David. A couple of folks have said that they got a dud Booster first time around. Have you just sent it back?
Been speaking to a lad called Liam. He's just had his bike remapped and says it's transformed the low down throttle response. He got a bit of a scare to start with as his bike was fuelling completely differently from all of the other 790s that the guy had done before. His was a used bike but with very low mileage so he suspects it's never been to a dealership for any software updates. Seems to be the only explanation.
I'll send you the link to the guys Facebook page. He does a postal one size fits all version for people that can't make it to his shop. An individual tune is obviously the best way to go. The bike seems to be set up very lean as stock.

@@DavidWilliams-pm4zc Least I can do. Don't like to hear of anyone not getting the same results as me after recommending a product.
Thanks for this video
I bought the KTM OEM heated grips for my 2020 690 Enduro R
The leads off the controller are yellow and black
the instructions make no mention of polarity
for me, the leads off ACC 2 are Black/Red and Brown, with the black/red being "hot" and the Brown being "ground"
From your video, it looks to me that you connected the controller Yellow to ACC2 Black/Red "hot"
And the controller Black to ACC 2 Brown "ground"
Is that correct?
thanks
Same colors on my 790 Duke 2018...
Hi rob great vid, if I have heated grips fitted does this mean I can no longer have a usb up front as the wiring is going to the accessories port for both the grips and usb?
That's a point... I'll ask about that. Think it must be okay as they would have flagged that up when I configured the bike I'd hope.
There's still a free set of connectors next to the ACC2 loom so I think that will be for the USB charger.
Heated grips are ace, and even better when your mate doesn't have any on a cold day! 😂😂😂
I’m not sure about acc2 it may be constant live, I know there is another accessories port under the seat somewhere so it’s not the end of the work may have to extend some wires somewhere along the line... my usb is on delay 😭
@@swang1664 Yeh. So's my one. End of October now. I'll have that done when I'm down the roads for Moose' service. Not in a desperate hurry now. Some loooooong waits for Power Parts just now, so imagine what it'll be like once North America is putting in orders too!
@@swang1664 Been thinking about it and you may be right. I have a vague recollection of a conversation with one of the mechanics the day that I picked my bike up. I'm sure that he said something about routing it through the bike and under the seat.
@@swang1664 ACC 2 ar linked to the ignition. ACC 1 are constant current for alarms :-)
Just for anyone like me who's following this. My connection to the ACC2 wasn't yellow to brown. Mine was yellow to black/red. Worth testing before you assemble everything like me then realise its not working haha
My 2019 smcr was the same. Yellow to Black/Red. You saved me a lot of time and frustration. Thank you.
To remove the left grip is it a torx bolt, Philips head screw or Allen head bolt? Also what size is same bolt?
Hi Reddevil007 I'm at my work tonight, but when I get a chance I'll have a look and let you know. My memory isn't so good these days 😉
Campbell Zero One thanks
Just had a look for you. Difficult little bolt/screw to get to that one, but it's a small torx. You are looking for a size '10'
Hope that helps you Reddevil007
Campbell Zero One thanks for that. Just removed it and put grip back on with bolt position further round so easier to take off next time
Which model should i buy for my 125 ?
Is there more than one? This is the official KTM Powerparts unit so I expect it'll fit the whole Duke range unless the bars are a different diameter? If in any doubt just give your local dealership a call and talk to someone in the Servicing department 🙂
do you disconnect battery beefore all this?
Hi Zero. I didn't because you're using the ACC plug which is only live while the ignition is on.
@@CampbellZeroOne ok, thanks ;) I am asking because I will be disassembling the heated grips after the previous owner. Useful video !
What camera mount is that on the wing mirror hole sir?
It's a home made effort Ripper. I had a few bolts laying around my garage and tried them to see which fit. (think it was M10) Bastardised a GoPro mount to allow the bolt to pass through the holes. Used a dremel for that. Put a nut above and below the GoPro mount and some washers in between to allow me to tighten before spraying it black. Cost nothing as they were all parts I had anyway.
Campbell Zero One pretty standard size hole on mirrors, and lots of people fit bar ends. Would have thought someone makes one but ive looked everywhere to no avail!!
@@flosh2walkthrough672 It would be handy wouldn't it. Pretty simple and not a lot to go wrong. Manufacturers seem to be more interested in selling you clamps for some reason though.
To bad the heated grips aren't from the factory and completely integrated in the bike.
Yep. Be much better if it was a factory option like BMW do. Would look much neater.
That Aston Martin Looks Sexy 👍
What is the music please? 😃
