    i feel like most of these definitions didn't do justice to the thoughts and ideas behind each concept. it's a good video to be introduced to these concepts but it's way more complex than just a paragraph. i'd love to see deep dives into each concept!

      I like your thinking there. I too found myself resonating with many of the mentioned beliefs and thought that finding balance between them all, similar to what you said, is the key to observe paths of life and choose which one to pursue. Perhaps not all philosophies, but a good handful of them.

    It is a misunderstanding of Stoicism to say that they put emotions to the side and choose to live their lives by reason.
    Desire and Fear, for example, were identified as emotions that cause harm, they were likewise tied to people having unwarranted expectations. Unwarranted expectations are, expectations from things outside of your control, meaning expectations from life, and people. The classical Stoic says the only thing one can have reasonable expectations from and of, are from yourself.
    It is 100 percent within the human experience to feel emotions, and thus you can expect to feel things, these feelings can inform, but should not guide your actions. The classical stoics let emotions come and go and do not let them guide their choices in the day to day. A classical stoic would tell you that you're being unreasonable by denying your emotions in their entirety and that it isn't rational to expect an experience without them, rather it would be rational to identify why you feel a certain way, and to weigh your feelings via practice and meditations. ((literally just like what Marcus Aurelius did)).
    Classical Stoicism is more about limiting expectations from others and life, so one can more easily achieve Eudaimonia ((the good life)) one free-ish from desires, fear, and the like.

    • @galenburnett9791
      @galenburnett9791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      desire isn’t a pair with fear, hope is. repulsion or hatred is the pair of desire. you can never eradicate, nor even diminish really, hope and fear, because they are like precursors of, and are married to, joy and pain: you cannot experience joy without then feeling hopeful afterwards of repeating that feeling; you cannot experience pain without feeling fearful afterwards of repeating that unpleasant feeling; buddhists etc THINK that it is possible to do so, and I hate to burst their bubble, but it just isn’t.
      What DOES happen though is through confronting one’s fears and pains one becomes stronger and immune to them, and then climbs higher to a new plane; however, only new pains and joys await such a person upon that higher plane, ad infinitum.

      It's basically like a type of Buddhism

    • @Phamtomdark
      @Phamtomdark ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rickwrites2612 Buddha wouldn't give two shits about a strong Kataleptic ascent of phantasiai; so no. Similar thoughts but the end goals are different.
      Buddha believes in both a metaphysical and material suffering and are actively trying to avoid reincarnation of the soul, Stoics are materialists that deal with the comprehension (katalepsis) of impressions (Phantasiai) through a lens moral responsibility (often enforced through some kind of metaphysical argument, like respect for ancestors whom brought you to this point.)
      Eudaimonia, and Apatheia are two goals though similar to Nirvana, are not such. The stoic sage can become these things through practice within a person's lifetime, while many forms of becoming a recognized Buddha seem to only be achievable when you give samsara (life as we know it on the wheel); my point Nirvana isn't achievable until you're not in Samsara (so you got to be one with the universe, not a person by any normal measure of a person, they seem to be mostly dead is what I'm getting at.)
      tldr; Stoics believe in comprehending the suffering and growing from it to live a life in accordance to what they thought was 'human nature' (measured expectations, responsibility and honor; Material things of this world help them live in it.)
      Buddhism believes that in comprehending the suffering, one gains the understanding to reach spiritual unity with nature so that they can no longer suffer now and also never be reincarnated again (because if you're Buddhist you believe in reincarnation, it is literally key for the concept of Samsara and Nirvana; both very metaphysical ideas. Maybe not samsara because that is all of THIS going on here, but I digress.)
      They're similar but, only when squinting your eyes together.

      You seem as confused as the creator, who has conflated politics and philosophy and meaning of life. Also liberalism means something much broader than that and includes most western political thought of past few hundred yrs it's a philosophy including capitalism and individual rights and pluralistic society. Basically all western politics today exists within it, it has nothing to do with the word Americans use for their moderates (who they think are left, 😂).

    I feel Lewis C.K had the best "meaning of life" philosophy. God is the most important person (logically speaking), so we therefore must make Him the most important one for us, or else we are doomed to worship idols that will not and cannot sustain us or itself. Only God is eternal, so if we truly commit ourselves to Him fully, then we can be free from the slavery, which is pride.
    I believe God made humans in "his image" by making us value "feeling important" as the most important human motivator, because God values being praised and worshipped the most. He becomes jealous when people worship idols, and requires us to worship Him alone, because He is the most important One. God is the only one who truly exists if you think about it, because He exists without needing to "exist", unlike everything else that needs to begin to exist.
    The meaning of Life is to fully surrender to God. Only then can we have Life. True Life. It's hard, since we want to be important, but if we humble ourselves, we can be made important by demoting ourselves to last place. Just like what Jesus says, "If you want to be first, make yourself last".

    nihilism is not pessimism. while I’m not a nihilist myself, this is a common myth. nihilists do not see inherent meaning to life, yes. however, they often do believe in creating your own meaning. they don’t all believe in doing as you wish either, as nihilism is an existentialist viewpoint, not an ethical one. you can be a nihilist who holds consequentialist ethical philosophies, for example.
    more research into it was probably needed

    People say they just want to be happy. I've been happy. Ive lived happy moments. Happiness perfumes the soul rot of an unsatisfactory life, for a while.
    Pain is unavoidable. Chaos, inevitable. Happiness is ever-fleeting. You must affirm your existence. Do something worth being proud of, despite the suffering you endured. That's all there is. It could just be making your coffee shop the best in town. It could be performing in theatre in front of a thousand people. It could be raising kids with a loving spouse. As long as you did it because it matters to you, and not just because it makes you feel good in the moment.
    That's my meaning. I fail too often, but that's the standard for me.

    I might have misinterpreted, but humanism isn’t about prioritizing humans over non humans because humans are the caretakers of the world. The “human” in humanism isn’t in contradiction to non human living things but rather in contradiction to ideologies, religions and other abstract concepts. Humanism says that the locus of moral concern is the individual human being, not nation states, gods, political parties, etc.

    Love the videos… just wanted to mention that nihilism isn’t necessarily a pessimist thing but more relies on the idea that nothing matters in a “greater” way - ex the universe is unknowable and meaningless. However, optimistic nihilism furthers this idea by saying that as the most intelligent and conscious beings in the universe (that we know of), human beings are here to MAKE meaning out of the universe. Which IMO is very different than what most people think of when they think of nihilism

    • @hopelesslyoptimistic8231
      @hopelesslyoptimistic8231 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Then that’s just existentialism. Real nihilist aren’t pessimistic; they simply do not care about what others think is important and that universe doesn’t care. I’m not a nihilist but any other description would just be contradictory.

      @@hopelesslyoptimistic8231 I thought absurdism and existentialism are both variations of nihilism. existentialism meaning that everyone makes meaning out of their own lives and absurdism meaning that their is no such thing as meaning and will never exist yet meaning that one can find happyness without meaning

    • @hopelesslyoptimistic8231
      @hopelesslyoptimistic8231 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@revengance4149 Nihilism is just the belief that nothing has meaning and any meaning we give anything is meaningless because ultimately it doesn’t matter. This is opposite to existentialism and absurdism because they believe in a meaning. Existentialism is the belief that we have to find our own meaning while absurdism is the belief that the struggle to find a meaning is the meaning of life itself. Nihilism is just nihilism; there isn’t any versions of it that wouldn’t just be something else because it’s impossible to give meaning to an idea that believes in no meaning. Nihilism just objects the idea of meaning in the first place.
      Nihilism isn’t inherently bad, but existentialism and absurdism are just (unironically) more meaningful.

    I feel like most if not all of these are true just in connection with each other, This is why I think we find it hard to name a meaning of life, its not that its not there, its just not easily described, its the synergy of multiple meanings and the balance between them, there is no singular meaning, us as humans i guess just want a simple end goal but the truth is there isn't a single one, there are multiple qualifications for meaning and over indulging in one or the other is normally not very good.

      That's what I was thinking, for one, posing such question is kind of absurd, as it is a very complex question and not easy to answer. Also I do believe since nature seems to move in a very counter-intuitive and moral-less, way, it would make sense to think that life has no concrete meaning and it's mostly just the consequence of conscience and biology, stoicism can be compatible with this logic, posing the idea that since life has no concrete meaning, it's best to leave life be and accept the things life throws at us, good or bad, and in enjoying the good things in life, you can find the hedonistic philosophies, and in accepting the bad things that happen in life, we can find philosophical pessimisism, posing the idea that it's best to not expect good things to happen and not expect to be happy in life. All of these sentences, thoughts, ideas and philosophies can be compatible and be sinergical one with the other, or so I believe.

      @@darianmerley8985 i think i see now, you were mocking the idea of there being a ‘meaning of life’ in the first place, right?
      so i would say there is no super-objective inherent in being alive beyond suffering and enjoying. in my opinion the soul is immortal and continues to suffer and enjoy in equal measure through eternity. the motivation or incentive or objective of every living soul is always to flee from, or seek to diminish or eliminate, their suffering, while chasing their joy; and they have no ‘obligation’ to do this, they just do it automatically and can’t actually help but do it; but that is as close as we can get to a ‘purpose’ or to finding a ‘meaning’ in life.

    Legalisim remembers me of Thomas Hobbes' political theory. It establishes that the government/state must be strong and heavy-handed in order for the citizens to respect laws and society. It also states that *man is evil by nature* and, therefore, it can only respect social contracts if it sees any kind of risk in breaking them.

    My take: most of them are true, but in a different way. For example absurdism is true in the sense, that we cant understand our meaning with our tools and the state that our species is RIGHT NOW. Humanism is true in the sense, that we are the highest form of intelligence that we can interact with, so its only useful to at least pretend that its all on us. Stoicism is th path to evolve into more than human. Live that way for long enough, and evolution will do the best (think of "fake it till you make it" for us as a species)

      One thing that conscious beings do since birth til their ends is learning.
      I really like to believe that we are existence learning about the existence of existence itself, as if the history of the universe was the journey of self-discovery of existence by existence itself, so, as long as you are learning new things about existence, your existence is worth for existence, so you will probably keep on existing.
