Leonard Strong was pitch perfect in that role. Listen closely to how he pronounced it the first time, and how he pronounced it the second time. The second time is just slightly different where you probably won't notice it the first time you hear it. So well done!

Yep, couldn't wait for the show to start, loved Max and the poor Chief. But 99 was lonely, she was so smart about dealing with Max. She'd have the solution and Max would take the credit. I immediately found out that she was the type of female that I admire. Smart and practical and very supportive. ❤

The Caan and appearances were in the same 1969 episode. I waited for Caan's billing back then, I had no idea how he was. He was billed "Rupert of Rathskeller as Himself". I learned about five years ago he had been reluctant to be on television as his movie career was just beginning.

@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc Many times when people try to resurrect shows they fail. I can't say as I remember any sequels or remakes, but I'm not surprised they didn't work. Sometimes it's just the combination of writers, actors, directors, etc, that makes a show, and it is difficult to re-create. However, I'll stand by my statement that this was one of the best on tv. It introduced all sorts of memes into popular culture. The shoe phone, the cone of silence, "missed it by that much!", and many more. But after it was over, probably should have let it be.

Most posters, deservedly, comment about the genius of Buck Henry and Mel Brooks in creating "Get Smart". Because both men are famous, it's easy to not realize that Leonard Stern was not only head writer but the producer of "Get Smart" for all of it's run. He was a comedy legend in his own right, having written for "The Jackie Gleason Show", helping Jackie Gleason to develop "The Honeymooners", writing some of the most memorable episodes. He also developed and wrote for "The Steve Allen Show". He did the same work AND executive produced "MacMillan and Wife", "The Governor and J.J", and the cult classic, "He and She". It was Leonard Stern, along with Don Adams that maintained and added to the Borscht-Belt type satire that Mel Brooks and Buck Henry created for "Get Smart". It would be a disservice not to acknowledge the enormous influence of Leonard Stern had on the form, nature, and hilarity of "Get Smart".

It's interesting though, to try and tell which ones were actual celebrity cameos, and which ones were probably just working actors. Obviously, Bob Hope, Carson, Milton Berle, etc. were all cameos done for effect, but I'm pretty sure many others, like Jamie Farr, Fred Willard, Tom Bosley, even James Caan were more just working actors at that time. This show ended in 1970, before any of the big roles of them and many others that were shown.

Campy is the hardest form of comedy because it has to maintain a structure and the timing has to be so precise. The 1960's were the golden age of comedy. Of course we never see all the flops anymore. The Caveman family time travel show My Mother the Car, Red Buttons spy show, Captain Nice, Mr. Terrific... .
