This game is always a oldie but goodie match up. Both teams will play hard.. I don't Duke is giving much attention to Malauch... at times he looks lost or not sure what to do on offense since it's a 5 out motion offense. He's probably use to and accustomed to be in the lane somewhere or down low.. I would hope at some point they implement some low post or highly options for him, or some screen and rolls foe him diving to the basket foe a lop or backdoor..u cant teach 7 '2 he's got skills and is a good passer . We have great perimeter shooters. I would hope we would implement and in and out offense as well.. here's hoping..🤞🙏
Jon Scheyer blows another big time game against a ranked non conference opponent. Make no mistake, Duke is the better team. Injuries unquestionably derailed this team in the 2nd half. Yet Scheyer still had the chance to win the game. This is why there are levels to coaching. And what is most concerning: Jon lost close games last year because of lack of end game preparation. To see that spill over to this year again tells me those losses didn’t resonate. Those loses should have been unforgettable learning lessons to grow from and build on. It should have given us an advantage in this game. Yet here we are again with similar results. You don’t just throw the ball to Cooper Flagg and hold your breath…. First of all, he’s only 17. Of course he’s bound to turn the ball over!!! Why couldn’t Jon make it easier for him to make a play???? Get the ball thrown to him on the block. Set screens and mis-direction for mis-matches. CALL A PLAY!!!! 8 Million Dollars a year and this is the best you have to offer???? I agree a lot with Jay Williams before and after the game. Particularly: This is an old school type Duke team, vintage Coach K 1990’s and early 2000’s team (as I’ve stated weeks ago). I also agree in regard to the end of the game - Proctor should have been orchestrating the offense. It doesn’t mean he takes the shot, but create a scenario that helps your players more, put them in a more favorable situation. And finally, what have I said about Foster….???? Why is he talked up as a sure fire starter???? What expectations has he unquestionably exceeded this past year while also being injured to garner him the starting PG role given this roster???? PLEASE TELL ME. He will bounce back from this game. But he’s still only a sophomore…. It doesn’t make any sense that a healthy, GR Transfer Veteran Sion James sits behind him. How am I the only smart guy in the room to understand this????? His first half performance wasn’t statistically outstanding or without flaws, but I thought he did excellent. How about you show us you can do it for 40 minutes of every game, then come talk to me about leading this team as one of our starters. This game was also another example of bringing Isaiah Evans off the bench in the 2nd half when Kon Knueppel isn’t providing that offensive spark and guys are walking with their heads down with poor body language to the bench. There is a lot I could say but we will just leave it at that.
@ It is and isn’t about talent. Yes, Duke has more talented players, but Duke is just better regardless. And I’m not trying to take anything away from Kentucky. They were improperly valued in the rankings preseason. Should have been closer to Top 15 +/- 2. This game is vindication of that. But realistically even as a Kentucky fan I would be objective enough to know they aren’t really title contenders. The Elite 8/Final 4 is the ceiling for them. Just as I can be objective on Duke reaching the Elite 8 last year. They had no business beating Houston (shamefully Jon Scheyer’s best win as a coach). The moment Jamal Shead rolled his ankle it was over for them. Everything Kelvin Sampson said post game was accurate. Duke is better because they are bigger and more physical. The best adjustment Jon Scheyer made all game was early in the first half when he forced more ball pressure on the perimeter. For me, this should have been a no brainer coming into the game because like many teams, they will live and die by the 3. But especially Kentucky. Scoring over 100+ points in their early games should have been the easiest clue. But again, when your lineup starts to spread thin and becomes small with Maluach and James on the bench due to injury, you lose your ability to clog the perimeter because you can’t safely protect the paint (and rebound for that matter). Losing the vitality of a 7’2” with a 7’9” wingspan center changes everything. Offensively and defensively. Go ask Kansas how their exhibition game went with Arkansas with Dickinson on the bench. Duke beat Arizona State by more than 55 points, yet Gonzaga barely held on against them. I’m sure Mark Few would emphasize it’s hard to win when your front court staple (Graham Ike) rots away for most of the game on the bench due to foul trouble. Couple that with losing your biggest perimeter defender (Sion James) and your advantages now drastically disappear. Sure Maluach came back in the game but he was clearly not the same player. And Duke’s title hopes this year are glued to Maluach’s health not Cooper Flagg’s.
Great job Guys! Very informative.

Scheyer got out coached. And Duke got out beat up physically!

Duke is the more talented team, not arguable.
It is equivocal as to the better team.
