Large, plush SUV motoring suits hybrid technology perfectly, but for a long time, only Lexus was able to bring us a package delivering running costs low enough and a driving experience desirable enough to make the whole concept really worth considering. In the 2012 to 2015-era RX450h model we look at here, the Japanese brand showcased a decade of experience with petrol/electric powerplants. Is it a good secondhand choice?
History
If ever a category of car cried out for a more efficient means of forward motion, it's the luxury SUV. For most of us, such a vehicle is only viable to own when equipped with a diesel powerplant - but even that attracts quite a bottom line running cost penalty. You'd expect then, that by now, hybrid engines would be common in this segment. By 2012 when the facelifted RX450h model we're going to look at here was launched, they still weren't. Which in its 2012 to 2015-era, gave this model an uninterrupted run at buyers who wanted a luxury SUV but weren't prepared to should the BIK taxation that went with rival diesel models.
This was, and still is, the thinking person's luxury SUV and it sold until an all-new model was introduced in early 2016. Let's check this 2012 to 2015-era design out as a used buy.

I love my 2013 Rx 450h. 108K miles. Still looks new, still going strong. Comfortable ride and handles like a dream. I get 30 to 31 mpg in good weather, about 26 mpg in New England winters.
Is that US MPG?
any battery issues ?
@@AWMJoeyjoejoeyes
There used to be no battery issues if the owner according the regular mfc scheduled maintenance is changing the battery compartment filter. Clogging this filter as faulty hybrid vehicle owner did is the main reason for shorter battery life than 150k mileage (CA law).

Excellent review
Thank you!
Very well researched video. I want this car!
Glad you liked it!
The one point not brought up is how these will be stupid reliable well past 200k miles.
Yes, and im in the UK, some good prices for these, ten years old and 70k on clock. Im 54 I dont do many miles so it would last me a long time hopefully.
@@oddities-whatnotif you did 50k miles a year it would still last you a long time.
we have a 2011 rx450h with 100k on the clock… comfortable, reliable and gets about 30mpg overall here in vermont… what’s not to like?
Before owning RX 450h AWD I owned first 15-yrs 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid Ltd, has 110k mileage on it and never had hybrid problem, specifically NiMeH battery problem, regularly followed w/ mfc regular scheduled maintenance, simply changing the battery compartment filter and etc and it was the only Ford brand exceeding reliability and dependability SUV. I traded in only because its getting older battery start ho,ding the charge mote shortly, overnight regardless of outside temp, cold or hot, it started loosing the charge more frequently. But not only this Ford full hybrid, but Toyota/Lexus also will allow to start the hybrid vehicle with minimal battery charge left, it’s given!
Which Ford executives made a wrong decision discontinuing this only successful and extra reliable hybrid SUV (reaching 300,000 miles as 24/7 hard working NYPD & NY/San Francisco yellow taxi). With other words, the point was made by many hybrid vehicle owners long time ago - just take care of your hybrid, follow w/ the regularly scheduled maintenance and you’ll not have anything to worry about.
Great review many thanks
Im 60, been driving 40 years with no convictions and never made a claim, still quoted £1000 to insure
It also depends upon where you live.
@beeryweery I live in a very nice area, with very low crime. Insurance companies are laughable
Hi, thank you for detailed overview of the Lexus SUV. Love my 2012 RX450h. Still going strong after 140,XXX kms on it. Two items I'm not sure of, does the SUV has a timing belt or chain? I get different answers from different people. Also, does the hybrid needs replacement during its life in this SUV? Thanks!
It has a timing chain, normal battery life I've seen so far from the old type of battery is over 20 years. Newer version has had a lot less problems. It's the newer version which is in this generation.
I have 2008 RX400H, on 171K miles... still battery is working ok

@nacefamazigh6280 yes mate, go for it doesn't have any problems and looks good.
I had a 2011 and now I have a 2014 they are great cars.
Just check if it has air suspension maybe it's better to get one without
@radustefan9699 thank you for your comment 🙏 no it doesn't have air suspension
Has spring/ shock and already changed 2 months ago
Looking at a 2nd hand 2012, great review, any tips/things I should be looking out for ?
Look for preferably single previous owner, lower mileage like below 80-90k and regular maintenance record on carfax. Lexus RX are usually a carrying owners, not like the average neglecting their vehicle other owner public.
So chances are much higher buying a Lexus RX that you’re going to get a regularly well-maintained vehicle. The difference is only whether to get 450h hybrid top of the RX line of Lexus or non-hybrid 350, since 450h has combined 30mpg while 350 models consumed much more, combined low 20mpg and even worse.
Is it only me that think the 3rd gen pre-facelift looks nicer and more classic?😅
Is the 13 the 3rd gen? I like the way that looks. I also love the fsport spindle grill
That's the 3rd gen, post face lift
@yangyu67 yeah post face lift with the hourglass grill looks dopest. Only problem for me is, all the face lifted ones with black leather interior I find also have the dark wood trim. The black interior with the red or brown wood is the one I’d like to get.
Yeah only you
The reclining and sliding rear seat are great for car "romantic encounters".
Yeah good call. How is your mum Shane?
❤😂😂🎉🎉
I prefer the 400h with ignition key rather than. Start /stop button about 2009
Get with the times. Why do you want to shove a key in all the time?
Like shoving a dic n a mic i guess? @@FilmScape4K
Why ,have multiple key fobs, because every rx is not fully equipped without remote start installed to really make one lazy ....
Because these cars with push button start and keyless entry are always getting stolen. Actually I don't mind the push button start as long as I can stop villains getting into the car . I would switch of the passive entry and just use the remote unlock like I do with my present car
You are making potentially best car reviews on youtube, but using 2006 video equipment to do it.
Your videos look like they are reuploads form 15 years ago. Please, fix that.
Indeed 👍👍
As always best review 👍🍺
Thank you!
Typical Japanese cars , Will be getting my white one soon , brilliant second car.
6 speed CVT? How does that work?
Seamlessly
It means it can emulate 6 gears, that’s all. Technically will hold revs higher sooner than if you leave it in auto and allows for “downshifts/upshifts” but I’d argue, more that the petrol unit along, there’s no point doing this in a Hybrid.
Wait, 6 speed cvt gearbox?
lol
It simulates 6 speeds
This is not a dig, reminds me of the good old days of top gear with william woolard and chris goffey, before the entertaining idiots took over ...
Not forgetting Quintin Wilson as well.
We Don't care about Co2, Were buying this to Save Money MPG, all im Hearing is Co2, Dirty, etc Every in every Sentence, SMH
If you like bigger one buy toyota alphard or vellfire same engine and better than this car
Sorry but driving an Alphard just signals to the world that you've given up on life.
Estima hybrid is far superior
Hey, I am having issue with my 2013 LexusRDX450h. I recently bought it and noticed it doesn't have green Ready icon and doesn't run, but the dashboard is showing other icons. Do you think it needs a 12v battery to be charged? Or it is something else? It doesn't show any error like check hybrid system. Just shows Brake red icon and Start button has amber color not green.
Sounds like carburetor needs to be changed 🫣
The system is not charging on the ev side . Odds are good whoever had it before didn't program it correctly or your brake charging sensor is messed up ... could also be time to replace the battery pack ...
12v battery need to have a compact lithium jumper they are about 60bucks.
