John Calipari bolts for Arkansas after 15 seasons with Kentucky, Bronny to NBA? | CBB | THE HERD

  • John Calipari agreed to a five-year contract with Arkansas after spending 15 seasons with Kentucky. He led the Wildcats to the National Championship in 2012 and went to four Final Fours in his first six seasons in Lexington. They went to the Elite Eight in 2017 and 2019 but only had one NCAA tournament win since their last run. Colin Cowherd reacts to the move and then discusses whether Arkansas will thrive under Calipari. Bronny James declared for the 2024 NBA Draft last week while keeping his name in the transfer portal. LeBron James has recently hinted at playing for only another season or two and expressed interest in playing with Bronny in the NBA. Colin reacts to Bronny's announcement.

let me know how Russell Westbrook, Jimmy Butler, Fred VanVleet, Alex Caruso, Austin Reaves, Draymond Green, Kyle Kuzma, Mikal Bridges did their freshman year of college, then maybe you’ll start thinking twice about your NBA prospect knowledge. Maybe then you’ll also consider guys like Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum and Steph Curry (among others) who had to go to lower level schools because the larger schools didn’t want them.
The point is not that Bronny will necessarily be able to accomplish what any of those guys have - the point is that even experts make huge mistakes on who will make it in the NBA, and they do this for a living. So you of all people should absolutely start questioning whether you know as much as you think you do. End of story

Tier 1: Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M. All of those are elite in all 3 categories
Tier 2: Kentucky, Florida, Mississippi State, Auburn, Oklahoma

After that is about 6 schools in tier 3 (Louisville, Michigan state, Indiana, Syracuse, Arizona, Villanova). Arkansas is in the next tier with schools like Texas, Tennessee, lsu, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio state, Oregon, Maryland, florida, notredame, baylor, auburn, (big budget football schools schools with some history of basketball success). If you're talking Top, middle and bottom tier than I would say Colin is way off on Arkansas's college basketball program status. How many hoopers who went 16-60 from three have had so many water carriers telling the public he is a good shooter? Without his father's name and influence, he probably isn't a top 30 guard in the transfer portal, much less a draftable player at this point. Boogie Ellis is not going to get drafted, but is about the same size and is unquestionably player at this point. You can do that for another 20-30 guards in this (by all accounts relatively weak) draft. Devin Carter, Eric Gaines, Bub Carrington, both Connecticut guards, Jamal Shead, both Kentucky guards, his teammate Collier, Trey Alexander, Mark Sears, Tyler Kolek, Wooga Poplar, Boo Buie, Tyson Walker, Reece Beekman, etc are about the same size and better than him. Not all of them are getting drafted. Would it be the end of the world if the Lakers hand him a roster spot to keep his dad around for another year or two? No, but that doesn't mean you have to pretend he is good enough to think those who oppose that kind of nepotism are being ridiculous. It also means the other 29 teams won't be bothered if they do it. If one of the other teams draft Bronny, and LeBron stays in LA, then they look like fools.

let me know how Russell Westbrook, Jimmy Butler, Fred VanVleet, Alex Caruso, Austin Reaves, Draymond Green, Kyle Kuzma, Mikal Bridges did their freshman year of college, then maybe you’ll start thinking twice about your NBA prospect knowledge.

That’s one reason why a freshman averaging 10 ppg can be a top 10 draft pick and a senior averaging 25 might not get drafted. The point, I reiterate, is you don’t have the skill or knowledge (or future-predicting skills) to tell how good Bronny will be. Even the experts don’t, and you’re certainly not that.
