I have read about articles on how DID can change body's chemistry, sometimes if one owns a pet, the pet can tell the difference. Your dog's behavior changed around you after your switch (Waving tail to not at all). Clearly this is one of the most realistic video I have ever seen. I salute you for your courage to sharing this with all of us.

This also happens to me during switching. I find that my dog behaves differently around me. My switches haven't been caught on camera that I know of, but I've bee. Caught on tape. I have an alter who has a speech impediment and is a child. When I first heard her speak, it scared me. My other alter sounds much like me but is a very defensive and protective alter. My fiancee and my dog can tell the instant the switch happens. Thankfully they understand and try to comfort me during those times.

As a zoologist, and animal behaviorist, it was interesting for me to see your furkid react to the switch afterwards.
He can physically smell a difference between you and Jamie.
I also think you were 100% right on the jokey bit of him not wanting you to switch, because he really was enjoying time with you, and he really appeared to be trying to ground you.
I've not seen an animal (other than animal alters) in any of the switching videos I've seen. It was really intriguing to watch your pup react from loving snugglebunny to hey friend, thanks for popping around for a visit (as seen when he is sniffing Jamie's hand first, instead of just hopping on the couch beside him as he had with you).
Animals are really good at sensing chemical changes in people, and it seems (based on the behavior I saw) as though your entire chemical scent composition switches with your alters.

Hannah's Simple Thoughts Are you able to say what's the difference between the DID that you see in your daughter and borderline dissociation? (If you know anything about borderlines or dissociation)
I am borderline myself and my mom often says that I am a different person, sometimes I forget what harm I cause her. And that's true, at some moments I love her and I forget the bad things in our relationship, and sometimes I forget the good things and I'm super aggressive.
I think this is a defense mechanism called splitting. how do I know is that is not splitting but D.I.D. switching?
How do you know your daughter has multiple personalities and not just simple dissociation and splitting with BPD? (Sometimes people are misdiagnosed) What do you notice in her behavior? Are there times when she changes and you notice that well she can't?
It would be super helpful if you answered.

    • @pauaolson
      @pauaolson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +85

@@user-wf2tv4jl6h I honestly don't know much about borderline dissociation. I will say that when my daughter switches each of her alters have a name, age, and their own disposition. I'm assuming that is the difference between the two.

As stomach issues are usually present in those with issues like BPD dissociation and several other illnesses like Asperger's, OCD and schizophrenia it really helped me to get on a candida diet for a month and kept my food habits clean and I'm not kidding, it's freaking helped so much. My OCD and Asperger's is so much better now and it was so quick its not even funny. Hope you can try it and keep yourself safe ❤️

Half the time I am aware its happening but don't really think about it enough to stop it, the other half of the time it happens and its only until later that I am like that was definitely a different ride...but don't get me wrong about this car image thing going on because the driver of my vehicle is going to always be me when I get into trouble its not going to matter what I call myself, this gets me back to my point; accountability and if you don't have that then you should be hospitalized because your risking everybody else. Call it what you want mental illness is real and it is a lack of being healthy mentally so being mentally ill isn't something you should be aiming for and publicizing as a need for acceptance. What people need is not to understand mental illness because I believe they far too much understand it as being crazy; but what people need is to be aware of what mental illness is. Just like anything you get diagnosed with there is treatment for or you are forever changed and scarred in some form or another that is persistent in nature because if it isn't then it is in remission. A person with an illness that is in remission is no longer ill but must be mindful of whatever it is that is either helping this depreciate or to symptoms that might be a sign of resubmission or relapse of the illness itself. Those whom chose to fight their illness through awareness, drugs, and constant cognitive and psychological treatment are in for a real fight for their lives but at least they are living and have hope to ascertain some resemblance of their true free spirited nature or imprint of whom they are. Erik Erickson is a theorist who talks about Identity verses Identity Crisis as being on of the critical stages of human development. Those that are stuck in identity crisis will not be able to sustain healthy and viable relationships without impairment and will have even further trouble down the road in future critical stages of human development like Intimacy verse isolation amongst others. We can talk about all the theorist in psychology and sociology and explain multiple personalities until we are blue in the face fighting over this and that, but what is without debate is that a person having to deal with this disorder is plain and simply sick. I don't mean it in a bad way, people get sick all of the time some people get colds, some people get infections and some people get high, while others may start to think they are talking to others; but for whatever reason they ventured to get diagnosed was that these symptoms became so severe that they needed help to alleviate them. This is what sickness means as far as severity and meaningful depth of the illness because nobody really cares about the particular strand of the common cold they just know they are sick with a cold. When the symptoms get more severe they may learn it by another name of another type of organism such as bacteria or a worm. Meningitis becomes real in its phenomenon of being deadly, but not all forms of meningitis is deadly and not all people show the same symptoms. DID (multiple personality) is a broad description of a mental illness that a person needs to fit into a certain amount of behaviors or symptoms to become diagnosed. Some of the details that make each and every case different are left out or they would have a book that would be thousands of pages long because each strand of multiple personality is remarkably different in structure than another. Therefore the diagnosis is very broad in the conditions that must be met and I remind you that it is only a certain amount that warrants a type II diagnostic. It is there plain and in writing in the DSMV books and has changed in its indications over the editions but the initial idea of the diagnosis hasn't changed. Some may say it is highly argumentative but that does not comply with the fact that it is written and permeated by scientific research and data. The real question Is why would someone want to fake having this disorder? Although we do have five other disorders to name a few that accommodate such actions like Hypochondria, Bi-Polar, Schitzo-effective, Borderline Personality, and ADHD (unfamiliar behaviors that are attached with attention seeking behaviors)...in this Doctors are skeptics when its the patients who must be the skeptics of themselves not vice versa. Doctor's should believe what the patient is telling them and access not truth or fiction but what is before them in the manner in which it is being presented. The idea that the patient is convinced of the disorder does not permeate the illness upon itself if the symptoms don't match the criteria or if the symptoms are a better match for something else. The patient may think and fully believe that they have alters when in reality they have Severe Depression with On-going Psychosis, I have seen this before where a patient had what appeared to be 5 different alters but in reality they were in such a deepened depressed state they were acting out a fantasy that had become a reality to distort and manufacture a blind spot for the true feelings of grief and loss. This altered state of awareness is nothing more than a state of being in a self hypnotic trance. These patients given the correct drugs within days stop displaying the altered states and begin to retort to a more stable mental state of awareness. This in itself should scare anyone from wanting or believing that they are dealing with Multiple Personalities because if its misdiagnosed and you could be treated and be well, then why would you want to stay sick? Again, manufactured illnesses are common because of the same resources that Doctor's use and wrongfully assume a diagnosis under false pretenses, screening for physical needs must first be done before a viable diagnosis mentally can be submitted. A person must feel safe and secure in their environment as much as so many get sent to hospitals for careful observation under settings designed to abstract the obstacles of the outside world. The art of diagnosis is much like the tedious stroke of a painter in that all else must be discounted before any one can become the culprit. Such is the insane world of untreated and overly treated depression. Depression is overly treated by those who claim anything to be abnormally negative while those whom don't claim anything at all would be untreated and be given a false negative. The fact is that most of this world fits within the guidelines of depression. You could say we are one depressed world! So what have you here? Doctors trying to treat the world or is it that Doctors are more comfortable setting the rules for just how sad and manufactured we are allowed to be? Be careful what you wish for because in the art of psychology there is no justice or rewards given out for unusual punishment such as having schitzophrenia and other psychotic disorders where once that stigma is placed upon you it becomes your shadow, a reflection of who you are...in every facet, your ability to drive, your ability to get and hold a job, your ability to make progress. The script is very real in the darkened shadows of today's society where breadcrumbs are fed to the psychotics. Just look at the homeless and you may see with your own eyes what true Dissociative Disorder stems from...just remember you never saw them before I just told you to look.

I missed the switch, but when you went back to explain it it made much more sense. However, what really got my attention was the dog. It seemed to act differently to you afterwards. At the beginning the dog was on the couch cuddling you and getting your attention but after the switch the dog came towards you differently and sniffed, then licked your hand. I’m not sure if this is accurate or not because I don’t have DID and I’m not incredibly educated on the matter but it almost seemed, from my perspective, that the dog knew you switched. Again I don’t know if this is accurate and I don’t mean to assume or over analyze but I found it very interesting to see.

Ally Cat Suprosingly dogs are able to recognise this, there’s this police man with DID in TH-cam and his dog isn’t allowed in the room and he changes to a child, when he becomes the child the dog comes in the room, when he changes back the dog leaves. Some dogs can pick it up over long periods of time and recognise you fully, if you see a dog time to time or lengthy it might not recognise you. This is my case with my dogs and after a literal week away from home and coming back my dogs barked at me and didn’t recognise me.

Saw it. I have mirror touch synesthesia, which basically means if you stub your toe my toe hurts too. When I meet new people, I never remember faces. What I remember is what a person feels like to me. I can amplify this experience by doubling in-meaning I imagine I’m inside you, seeing what you see, smelling what you smell. Etc. So what I felt as you dropped out was a sense of disengagement. Then you felt like someone else-the way you held your head, the way your accent flattened. The reason I’m watching vids like this is I think my Mom has DID. Having seen you switch, I’m convinced-because that is exactly how it feels with my mom. It’s too bad DID is so sensationalized-because it’s actually the subtleties of dissociation that make it so disruptive Thank you for sharing.

That said, we're only newly aware of each other, so I can't help but wonder if that will change for us as time goes on (& acceptance + communication improves).
Many thanks for showing this less obvious switch, I know it's very personal. 💜👏

We tend to be coconscious constantly and switches are generally quite subtle unless someone specifically wants to fully front.
“Messy switches” tend to happen if it’s a new Alter, or someone who only fully fronts occasionally.
Definitely yes to the eyes thing!
That is a big indication that someone is coming forward for us to.
We blink a lot, rub our eyes, get a bit glazed over, etc.
Also depending on who switches will depend on the impact it has on our body.
Some Alters have a bigger impact because of how they function which can result in headaches, sensory overwhelm, etc.
But a forced takeover is the absolute worst!

This was really interesting and educational, thank you for covering this topic!
The switch was a little more subtle than I had expected, but it was actually a clear transition. It went from Jess' body language of "I'm a little uncomfortable", where the arms and legs were sort of tucked in and hands were fidgeting, to Jamie's more relaxed and confident body language. When you see the hair flick, the posture changes and shows that Jamie is fronting.
I've seen a switch on tape before, and it was similar in that the body language and/or facial expressions change. I saw the host switch to the little alter, so the change in body language was very clear as it went from "adult woman" to "somewhat shy four year-old".
Also congratulations on having a healthy baby girl ❤ I certainly don't doubt that all of you will be wonderful parents ❤

Just to share from what I’ve noticed from my boyfriend and his alters as well as my good friend who actually switches on a daily basis, there are a couple things I’ve noticed that I can hopefully share so you know. I myself don’t have DID but have theories and ideas about switching and at least have an outside point of view for multiple people.
    So:
The rubbing of eyes and such is something that I see EVERY switch. (Not including “confronting” I believe you called it, as I’m not sure of much terminology) and more often than not, if it’s a controlled switch, they will lay down and get comfortable while they basically tell the other one to come out. For example, my boyfriend will switch every so often just so we can basically just check on the alters and be like “hey you wanna play some games?” Or something, I’ve taken them shopping for their own personal stuff. Basically I personally give them validation for existing in a scary confusing world, where I’m their only constant at this point.
(I feel like I’m rambling here so I apologize.)
But basically main thing. I’ve noticed is: every switch shows the same signs as having just woken up, 9/10 yawn and stretch included. Which makes sense considering the body has physically used the energy that they feel they had before.. idk if my wording makes sense. Basically it’s the same as waking up tired and in a different place than you were before, so there’s usually some orientation for a bit.
I’m kinda happy to see how it works for other people considering I have noticed a few constants in it all.

So I just watched a video on body language (to tell if people are lying) and apparently rapid or slow blinking is a sign of lying because it means the brain is tired and needs a rest. You're so good at explaining DID.
The subtleties of switches or "fronting" are why people can live with us for years and not even realize that's what's going on.
I haven't lost serious time from a switch in a decade or so. My symptoms seem to have gotten better the older I get. I'm 47 now and feel more like a whole person than ever. At first I thought there was another personality coming forward after all these years but realized it was just us as a whole. Wasn't familiar with this "whole person." But I feel really good like this and am starting to mourn more than ever the years lost as a fragmented soul. But we'll grieve those years and move on with "our" life. You're doing a good thing here. Don't doubt it.

I’ve seen other videos and I KNOW other people are faking this. If those people who are faking it only knew that this is a mentally draining thing, exhausting sometimes .. confusing thing to understand about ourselves. But Once we can accept that this is part of us and that we’ve had it for years .. it actually makes me feel more relief! Surprisingly.

Oh my! This video brought up a lot of thoughts-- ideas, issues, memories... In the interest of brevity, I will try to focus a bit. First, Jess, thank you for this video. You are very brave to calmly teach folks about DID. Regarding switches, I think people forget this is not television or the movies. There's no sparkles or sound cues to let other people know a switch has occurred. And often, as you illustrated, it doesn't really look like anything. I seem to have been 'born co-conscious' and these days switching is fast, easy and there can be a lot of 'co-fronting' as you call it.
In the early '90's, it was very common for people with DID to show up on talk shows. The audiences were often very skeptical and not very supportive. I remember someone wanting to see what a switch looked like. This brave woman took on the challenge. She looked away, coughed and voila there was an alter! But some folks in the audience did not buy this. It was frustrating to watch.
Fortunately, I have had a very supportive family. My kids could often just look at my eyes and know who was out. My son can probably still do that. Again, thanks for making this video.
