The Music Mode would be the main thing with this one! Perfect for that party feeling in the living room when finally being able to meet up with friends after Corona!
Do we have a contender for the coolest HomeKit device of the year?! It'd be more than welcome to finish out my HomeKit bar. 5 meters is a bit overkill, but 2 meters is a great length. Definitely impressed that it has an outdoor rating. I cannot wait to see what I can do with this light strip.
Hmm. I’d put it in the bedroom but If I had the 5M I’d use the addressable feature to mimic those theater and aircraft aisle lights to subtly guide my mate to the bathroom in the wee hours, she bumps into stuff a lot.
So so so cool !!! Glad the scenes are exposed to HK. I like the idea of turning off units so you don't have to cut it. The won't work for every setup but definitely a great options for some.
Thanks. I’m aiming to release videos more often. It just takes a lot of time to do the videos the way I prefer, but I’m getting better at cutting down on the parts that take up more time.
I would use it on the wall of my staircase, at ankle level, automating it to trigger with a motion sensor so whenever my parents have to walk down at night, (maybe to get a glass of water) they don’t have to fumble with the light switch and it’ll also keep them safe making the steps visible. I would prefer a 5 m version, although I can make do with a 2 m version leading up to the light switch.
Hi, You've been tentatively selected as a winner for the 2m Strip, although this is dependent on whether we're able to ship to your destination. Please reply here by end of midnight Sunday (PST) with your general location in the first instance, and we can then contact you directly, to get your full shipping details. If we don't hear back, we'll, unfortunately, have to choose another winner.
Nice review, been waiting to see what this strip is capable of. The 5m version would make for some pretty cool backlighting for my TV. Scenes getting exposed to Homekit is always a nice touch How does this compare to the Cololight strip? That one also has some cool effects and Homekit support
Thanks. I’d say comparing the two, the Cololight is probably brighter as the LEDs are more closely packed together. The Cololight has some nice animations too, but at preset it can’t (easily) do custom static painting on the strip like the Onvis can. It is possible in theory, but there’s no way to save your creations.
Hi Simon, These Onvis light strips have turned out to be the least reliable light strips I've had. I have four sets of these in two separate homes. All four of these have disconnected from wifi multiple times in the last year or so. Whenever this happens it requires removal from the Onvis App, factory defaulting, adding back into the Onvis app and then Apple Home. Then I have to set up the lights all over again. I'm done with these. All four have disconnected for the last time. It took a couple of weeks but the last two disconnected at the same time the other night making all four sets inoperative. I won't be adding them back in.
Sorry to hear that. I don’t use mine since the Aqara T1 came out, but I think mine only disconnected once in the couple of years or so I was using them, and a power cycle was only required to get them running again. If they’re all doing this, it’s unlikely they’re all coincidentally faulty, so it’s very strange they’re acting this way. Did you try contacting Onvis about it?
Yeah, it's strange. Even stranger, after writing this review two of the units reconnected on their own. They never did that before. I always had to default and add back in. Two are still down though. Went through all of the usually trouble shooting multiple times. I recently bought the Aqara T1 myself. So far so good....@@homekitnews
Hi and thank you a good and thorough review. Question: if you unplug the lightstrip while in a preset mode (lighting effects), will the lightstrip remember what preset mode it was in before the power loss ? I'm thinking of controlling on and off with a smartthings wall plug and still have it on a lighting effect.
Hi, in the Onvis app you have two options for when power is restored to the strip - Last State, or Fixed. Last State is the one you would want, and it works with all modes, including Preset. Fixed allows you to set a specific (solid) colour and brightness level on power restoration.
Yes, you can only deactivate units from either end, although you can set individual units to be at zero brightness in a custom preset too if you want, which achieves a similar effect.
ordered the 5m to put above the kitchen cabinets. I am struggling to get it to connect to the app. The button hand controller works, but cannot get homekit or the ONVIS app to see the light strip accessory. Any pointers? I have moved homepod mini to underneath the kitchen cabinets and iphone to lay on top of the hand controller.
@@homekitnews ok, I unplugged the strip and set it next to router and now the app has detected it. Now I will move it back into the kitchen I guess 30 feet from router was too far away for detection. Thanks for the prompt to get closer.
Yes, it’s available via the Onvis app. Be aware that this strip is only really fully useable via The iOS version of the app. Apparently the Android version is very limited.
I don’t use Android, so I had to double check. It seems there’s no Android version of their app, so if you use Google or Amazon, you still need to use their iOS app. I’m just double-checking with Onvis to make sure that’s correct. It would seem that even if you’re able to set it up, whilst you could control it via the Google or Amazon apps on Android, there’s no way to access the multicolour lighting options via these respective apps. UPDATE: I’ve been told there is an app for Android that can control some Onvis devices, called ‘Cloud Intelligence’. It doesn’t give you the same features for the light strip that the iOS Onvis app does, but it allows you to control the strip on a basic level only.
Hi, they’re different products in some ways - the Nanoleaf can only do 1 colour at at time, so the K1 is better if you want multiple colours. The Nanoleaf is a LOT brighter, especially for white light, so if that’s important, then the Nanoleaf is the one to go for. The Nanoleaf also uses Thread, not WiFi, so if you have a HomePod Mini or 2021 Apple TV, you’ll get really fast response times.
There’s was no information on the amount of lumens the strip is capable of, so I couldn’t include it. It’s also not RGBW, only RGB, so colour temperature isn’t something I could reliably measure.
@@homekitnews Oh ok didn't know about the RGBW thing, good point For brightness and colors I just expected comparison to other strips you have, like other big reviewer channels usually do
@@live688 if this was a basic strip, I may have compared it to others, but the two issues there is that I’d have to first have a variety of other strips to hand, which I don’t have, but more importantly, this strip has so many features, it would be a really long video if I included a comparison section. The written review does go into more detail however, if that’s of use.
Is this really ONLY for apple users? Are you kidding me that I've spent so much money on this 5m of ligts and the only thing I can do because I don't own ios is to change colour of the whole thing and brightness?!
It works with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa, but as I only focus on iOS and HomeKit, I am not aware of whether Onvis make an Android app.
@@homekitnews It works but only when you want to change colour of the whole thing or change the brightness, other than that you HAVE TO buy an apple product...

2M to enlighten the darkest space in my Apt. behind the bed. 😱

5m outside my home under the overhang of my second story.... I think it would look amazing for Christmas lights and other decorative occasions.
5M for my kitchen. Would love to add a little color and have the ability to have some dim lights in there for when I’m up late with my baby!
This looks surprisingly good! I would love to use the 5M version in my newly refurbished bedroom.

As far as I’m aware as this only uses WiFi, there’s no potential Thread capability for this device, and no firmware could bring Thread to it.

You can’t extend these strips unfortunately. However, you can get them to sync via HomeKit or the Onvis app.

I don’t see why not. you may have to work out how to hide the wire coming out of one end of the strips, but other than that it should be ok.
