When she revealed she had cancer I felt pure rage on her behalf for how she’s been bullied into making this announcement. People have a right to privacy for their health. This woman has children and she’s probably been suffering for at least months before the surgery. And now she’s scared and has to explain things to her children and people are out here having fun speculating that she’s secretly dead or leaving her husband over an affair. It’s cruel and why I don’t go near most social media. I’m just too disgusted by people’s behavior.
I laughed when I heard that the Palace is looking for a new communications manager. Good! Kate deserves better. I am on the side of respecting a sick persons privacy. All I needed to know what she is recovering from major surgery. I assumed a procedure went wrong or they found something. She should've been taken better care of by her communications team. Throwing the cancer patient under the bus is not a good look. I am not a monarchist, but I am a human that has assisted family members with recovering from major surgery. The royal family needs her more than she needs them. She is the most popular royal.

I don't think everyone on her team knew. There were several article about senior members of their team not knowing where she was at, not knowing about the surgery, hadn't seen her. It makes sense now.

After watching her statement I understood all the mystery and secrecy behind… cancer is a HUGE shock in any family, even more in someone so young, I’m sure it took the palace by storm therefore they didn’t know and ofc didn’t have a plan on how to handle the situation. It’s really sad and I hope people just let her alone. It must be really hard to handle it around your young children, now imagine having to handle it in front of the entire world…

Great video! Very thoughtful! I wish you’d touched on the adversarial relationship that William has with the press and vice versa a little more. William very much never wants to play ball with the press (for good reason given the nature of his mother’s life and death), and I doubt that even the most accomplished PR expert could truly sway him if he wanted to follow a certain strategy. He is after all the future king and their employer. Also think it’s interesting that the British press grumbled about Kate being the primary photographer for a lot of their early family photos. Only very recently did they start bringing in outside photographers to capture official family pictures. For her to take AND share a highly coveted family picture via Instagram rather than official press channels probably rankled some feathers alongside slower sales during her medical leave. Pictures of Kate are one of their biggest moneymakers, and I think they would have loved to have that highly-coveted picture taken by an outside photographer rather than Kate.

@@theswiftologist oh definitely! They’re two halves of the same whole when it comes to the press. William just has the pressure of being the future king and doesn’t have as much wiggle room when it comes to telling the press that he hates them. They have to like him when he ascends to the throne because they do have a LOT of influence on public perception. Harry can tell them to shove it because it’s unlikely he will ever become king. It’s an interesting little game of chess they play with the British press. Thanks for another great video!
i think what made this worse was the statement beforehand that the abdominal surgery was for someone “not cancerous”, which I think was clarified by official sources after the king’s cancer announcements. i think if they hadn’t said that, more average people would have ASSUMED it was cancer or something very similarly serious, but because they had publicly ruled that possibility out prematurely, the average person thinking about why she hadn’t been seen or what they were hiding then was kind if like, “well, what ELSE could it be?” and ran wild with it
Two weeks in the hospital is a long stay. It stood out in my mind. As a nurse, my mind went to hysterectomy or female issues. I'm sad she was forced to issue a message 😢

Guilty as sin of having been too amused by this but in the back of my mind there was always something nagging me that this could be worse than we thought however positive and optimistic me was always hopeful that this just was a poorly handled situation by her press people and that she was fine. They just didn't want to give two bad news at a time and this just went bonkers.

The Palace PR team owe Kate, her famil and friends an apology for bungling this whole thing so badly. And no one else. No one is entitled to anyone's medical information, even if they are a royal in service to their nation.
That being said, they realy should have just disclosed it as soon as the medical information was complete, after Kate had told her own friends and family personally. When people are bored and feel like they're being lied to, they will resort to conspiracy.
And also, this is the value the Royal Family ostensibly still exists for in the 21st century: to be objects generating public discourse and revenue. It is dehumanizing for Kate personally, but that is also literally the job description. All the accumulated wealth and privilege is the payment. They decide whether they sign up. (Unless they are born to it, of course)

Most of the theories though, were started from the US, and the likes of TMZ. I completely understand that the photoshop, and videos showing appearances at a different time etc.
The one thing I will say, is that NOBODY IS ENTITLED TO KNOW ANYONE ELSE'S MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS. IT IS LIKE HIPA IN THE US. From a UK citizen, who is pretty much not bothered about the RF, in terms of gossip and news. But in this case, I am taking consideration of a woman a human being, with children and above all, as a previous healthcare worker, consent and confidentiality.

Incredible and thorough investigation/essay on how the monarchy has been operating for the past 4 decades to cling to its image.
It just goes to show the length the royal presse corps - and the overall monarchy - are willing to go to protect the men who are born in the family vs the women who marry into it.
I have many issues with Kate but I can’t believe how cruel they were to throw her under the bus for the photoshop fail given 1) how rampant conspiracy theories were, but 2) most importantly that she’s undergoing chemotherapy. Like isn’t there a royal aide or pr intern who could have taken the fall for this? I can hardly believe that Kate has the passwords to her social media accounts on an everyday basis, let alone has time to edit pictures while undergoing chemo.

Re:the right to privacy vs. the obligation to be transparent as public figures, I feel differently about how much Kate should be expected to divulge of her condition than I do for Charles. Not just because of Charles’s position as the head of state, but I think the ages of Kate’s children plays a big part here. Public figure or not, I think any parent should be given the time and space to explain a very serious medical condition to their children and give them the space to come to terms with that before it’s announced and becomes a topic of national conversation. I think that’s doubly true in a family that is still haunted by the trauma of a mother dying too young (albeit under VERY different circumstances). Now it sounds like Kate’s cancer was caught early and is treatable, but I doubt any elementary school age child hears the word cancer and doesn’t associated it with terminal illness. So I don’t begrudge their decision to wait until the kids were out of school on extended break to release this information into the world. To me that’s good parenting even if it wasn’t great PR.
That said, KP definitely could have handled this better. Letting Kate stay basically in hiding for three months was a ridiculous choice if they wanted to delay speculation on what might be wrong with her. The bigger the secret you’re hiding, the more important it is to make it look like everything is normal! And while I don’t think Kate should have been forced to do public events while she’s recovering from surgery, a few well chosen Zoom calls to charities Kate’s active in probably would have been enough to stave off the worst of this frenzy of speculation. With the way she stayed out of sight and then only appeared in a photoshopped image, I was honestly expecting that there was something wrong with her face. Like maybe she had taken advantage of the downtime she would need from her abdominal surgery to get some cosmetic work done at the same time (not that she needs it! I just know that’s how my grandmother tried to get away with getting her eyes done without anyone noticing😂).
The interconnection of mistrust with the media, conspiracy theories, and AI manipulation seem to be leading us to a life along the lines of the simulacra by Baudrillard
I do think KP screwed this up, I can see it from Kate and William's point of view. My daughter was 9 when both her father and grandfather we diagnosed with cancer. The cancer announcement regarding King Charles needed to be told to C&W kids and if the timing is correct they may or may not have known about Kate's diagnoses. Even if they did they most likely didn't have all the information regarding treatment and even what kind and stage. So telling the kids about their grandfather and letting that sink in before telling their kids makes complete sense to me. We didn't tell my daughter what was exactly wrong with her Dad until we knew what kind, stage and treatment plans. So timing and just dealing with the aftermath of Kate's diagnoses plus the Kings one can see how the timing makes some sense. That said it does not absolve the PR at KP of their screwups or rather malpractice. They do really need a social media expert!

I think what some people don't get is that Kate and Wills ARE Kensington Palace. Yes they have a press team but ultimately I think their press release /prior/ to the conspiracy theories was adequate. There never should have been a "where's kate" movement because we knew where she was. She was at home recovering from surgery and from the recovery time provided we can safely guess it was a pretty major surgery. Social media and news outlets blew it out of proportion. As for her cancer diagnosis, I understand why they wanted to hide that until their kids were on Easter break and I do think it's a bit different to King Charles' diagnosis.
King Charles' is the Monarch - he has to be transparent with his health, yes Kate is a senior royal but at the end of the day she is NOT an heir to the throne. Another notable difference is KC doesn't have three young kids who attend school. I think the reason KP were trying so hard to squash the conspiracy theory rumours is 1. it is stressful for Kate who is supposed to be focusing on her recovery and 2. their kids were most likely hearing about it at school from their peers and friends and at their ages kids can be cruel and brutal. Having a sick mother is scary enough without seeing headlines speculating that your mother is in a coma or is on her death bed. I don't fault Kate and Wills for wanting to wait for the media storm about her diagnosis to happen whilst they could somewhat protect their kids whilst they were on break from school.
Given the conspiracy theories at the time, I do think the Mother's Day photo should have been checked more closely before release but mistakes happen and Kate & Wills are not the first nor the last to post an obviously photoshopped photo. I think knowing that Kate had had surgery (and now knowing her diagnosis) I think it is safe to say Kate might have been concerned about her appearance and over corrected. It was not their first family photographed to be accused of having been photoshopped so again, I think even this was blown out of proportion.
In all I would be very surprised if their press team even knew about Kate's diagnosis until a few days before the video announcement. I think Kate's diagnosis was a tightly held secret that only select family members knew about whilst the staff remained in the dark until Kate and Wills were ready to announce because as we all know, loose lips sinks ships and this was NOT something they wanted leaked.

She edited the photo and didn't inform her staff. She held her hands up and apologised, didn't want anyone else to take the fall. I believe she edited it because it was edited at their home in Windsor at 9pm 8th March and early Saturday morning. They don't have staff at their home, it's usually just the 5 of them unlike at Kensington palace were there are offices and meeting rooms. Now their is another photo that Kate took that was edited. I believe it.

This whole social media saga surrounding Kate over the past weeks has been unbelievable, even by todays standards. Kate literally said weeks ago that she had had major abdominal surgery and that still wasn’t enough for people to leave her alone. I can’t imagine having to record a video telling the world you have cancer so that people will leave you and your children alone, when you’ve barely processed it yourself. I hope people learn a lesson from this.

i'm so mad at the palace cause all of their decisions were so dump and counter productive and like poor kate having to be like"oopsies graphic design is my hobby and i made a very obvious error, silly ole me!" (as if they don't have the acces to the best retouchers?). Like the woman had surgery so yes maybe the image is touched up or from last year but they waned to post their little card. Ridiculous, embarrasing, on top of having to deal with her condition she had to take the fall for that? yikes. If they can get Kate in and out without being seen, I'm sure they can get William and her parents in and out. Also, that pic/video of William driving to the hospital was probably an agreement between the palace and the press, here's one pic/video now leave me alone.

Can’t agree more and even the photoshopped family phoso , I think, wasn’t her fault! How come the firm’s PR team didn’t review it before allowing it to be published? She apologized for something that wasn’t her fault… 😢❤
