    84 Charing Cross Road, I read it this year, too, , loved it so much. I'm going to check out Why We Sleep, it sounds really interesting.

    Olive, your succinct, articulate and compelling videos are exceptional! What a joy to learn more about the world from your fascinating recommendations. I hadn't heard of most of these books and just requested six from the library as I feel they really, really need to be read. I'm so glad you are highlighting non fiction! Much appreciated.

    Thankyou so much Olive. What a great list. I only found Booktube and your channel in October this year and I have fallen down the rabbit hole. I do enjoy non fiction but I have been waiting for your top 10. I already had Rough Magic and Hammer Head on my list. Why we Sleep and The Good Neighbour are already on my audiobook player. I have read 84 Charing Cross Road and Just Mercy and completely agree with your take on both. So now I'm adding the rest of this list to my TBR. Thanks
    In the vein of Saving Jemoma and how to Catch a Mole, I read The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elizabeth Tova Bailey and it was quiet and wonderful.
    Thanks for being so generous with your time and understanding. You have a new fan here.

    I just discovered you! Alice from The Book Castle recommended you because I said that I wished there were more Booktubers who talked about nonfiction books. WELL. You were a great recommendation! I LOVE nonfiction and I'm loving your recommendations after just this video! I, too, am a bird lover (birder!) and so already put Saving Jemima in my cart. And I absolutely LOVED 84 Charing Cross Road- both the old movie and the book. I'm looking forward to watching you more and getting more recommendations! Yay!

    Maybe You Should Talk To Someone is in my top ten of non fiction this year. I’m currently listening to my number one
    Say Nothing
    I know all the story surrounding the kidnapping of Jean McConville. I grew up in the “Troubles”. It’s an important story as to how violence permeates the lives of the innocents in the midst of conflict.
    I still want to read Just Mercy. I was moving house during the read along.

    As a therapist can I suggest the author Irvin Yalom, who writes stories about working with clients. He is so honest and compassionate, whilst being profound and fiercely intelligent. I believe his first and most popular collection is “Loves Executioner” and you may love it 😊

    Currently reading 84 Charing Cross road so I agree on your assessment. I own Why We Sleep and Rough Magic but now must add Strapless, Saving Jemima, and Maybe You Should Talk to my list of books you inspired me to buy. I suffer clinical depression and having undergone many years of therapy, I think I will enjoy that last book mentioned very much. Thank you so much for sharing.

    Why We Sleep and You Should Talk to Someone are still on my list, must get to them in 2020. I reread 84 charing cross road last summer...I agree, the one letter at the end: heartbreaking. Favorite nonfiction I read in 2019: Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe and Growing Up, by Russell Baker. Happy New Year!

    Great list! I have read 84 Charing Cross Road and absolutely love it. I’ve also seen the movie with Anne Bancroft and love it as well. I am planning to reread it soon. It’s one of my favorite books ever. Listened to Just Mercy for your read along. It was terrific because Brian Stephenson was reading. I then went to library and got it out for my husband to read. I am planning to recommend it to my book group. I also read Rough Magic and loved it! A friend has it now and she’s enjoying it. My next nonfiction purchase will be Strapless. I’m all in for books about art. So, now, how about a video on those other 10 books?

    Thanks for the comments on, "The Good Neighbor". I grew up watching Mr. Rogers. I was afraid this book (as well as the Tom Hanks movie) would paint him in a negative light. I'm a grown woman of 51 and I don't think I could handle that. Call me sentimental and naive, but that's how I felt!
    My sappy Mr. Rogers story: I don't remember the specifics, but I was an adult going through some hard time or another. My nieces were young at the time and had the show on. I happened to catch a bit. I don't remember what he said, but it was something about being loved or whatever. I cried like a baby. It was just what I needed at that moment.

    I tried reading Why We Sleep by audiobook, and I don't recommend that. Fascinating information, but frustrating when he refers often to charts and such I didn't have access to. I absolutely loved Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. It's tied for my favourite read of the year along with The Lady from the Black Lagoon.

  • @Nataliecj
    @Nataliecj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just Mercy was my favourite non-fiction read of the year, it was heartbreaking but so good. Some other favourites are All That Remains by Sue Black, Maybe You Need to Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb, Kicking Off by Sarah Shephard and Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas.
    I ordered 84 Charing Cross Road and want to read it soon! So excited for all the non-fiction reading in 2020.

    So many great books! 10 probably.... You have me totally sold on Strapless. One of my friends had a print of that picture, he died suddenly this year. I think i'll get a copy of the book for me, and for his wife. I've been thinking about getting my own copy of the print. I tried to read Maybe You Should Talk to Someone a few times (ie I borrowed it from the library, but then never got to it), but am still keen. And who could resist the Mole book - although why anyone needs to be a mole catcher I don't know (mole biologist I guess?), and the Jemima book sounds great too.

    • @abookolive
      @abookolive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what he said in the book, people hire him to get moles off their property because they're creating molehills all over the place. He gets rid of them, knowing all the while they're just going to come back...I can see why he got very tired of the job.

    I really liked Just Mercy, but found Maybe You Should Talk to Someone to be just okay; that is, interesting while I was reading it, but rather unmemorable. 84 Charing Cross Road sounds interesting. I think I'll check it out!
