  • Social Security Benefits rules and countries listed for non-US citizens can be found here : www.ssa.gov/in... (and PDF page 7 within). Besides a note of caution that local SSA office representatives may not have complete information on the benefits to non-citizens. Also note that the SSA.gov specifies everywhere on their site that the information is subject to change so please do your own research at the time of viewing this video. :) My intension in this video is to make you aware of this benefit so you can avail it if you qualify to receive it. But if there is any incorrect information do reference it for the benefit of all. Best!

Maximum Social security benefit is at age 70. it will not grow after that. The age 67 milestone means that there is no penalty if you are still working and getting Social Security. Also if your spouse is deceased, you can collect Social Security at age 60 on his/her benefit.

40 count is not 10 years but 10 calendar year, even if you earn 5k amount in a year it is count as 4 credits. I had 40 count in less months because I worked in multiple break in USA

As per my understanding non US citizens when they go back to India may not get SSN benefits since USA govt has not yet signed "totalisation" agreement with India.

For US to give Social security the country in which we are living(rather we hold citizenship) should have a similar program. Since India don't have such program, Indians don't get Social security benefits. As far as i remember India have been trying to negotiate on this saying provident fund is same as social security but US never accepted that. If we are going to live in EU , Canada, Australia etc yes by becoming their citizen we can get social security benefits if we work atleast 10 years in US.

Mandar. I necessary do not agree with you that non citizens are eligible for SS benefits unless the rules changed. I was also under the impression for the last decade that if I didn’t receive my GC and return back to India I would be eligible for SS benefits when I turn 65. However when I did receive my GC and went to SSN office, I was told that I am now legally eligible for SSN. Upon further investigation on SSN I found it was true. Also there is no treaty between India and USA where SSN benefits can be provided for non citizens. The same case is true for Canadians and Mexicans too. 😊

From your video, you are indicating that 401K gets taxed. However, the video does not cover the scenario as to when 401K gets taxed. For 401K, taxes have to be paid at the time of withdrawal, not when the fund is in the invested state, plus penalties come into play and age gets factored in as well. I understand you start with a disclaimer that you cannot cover all details, but I felt this was a case of over-simplification. Regardless, great presentation, keep the good work.

Social Security Benefits rules and countries listed for non-US citizens can be found here : www.ssa.gov/international/countrylist4.htm (and PDF page 7 within). Best!

Practically Indian citizens don't get SSN benefit even if you have 40 point, due to India is not part of the SSN beneficial country list.. except you have GC and you are going India frequently. But that's also not a good option to carry as GC can be revoked if you are not spending much time in USA in a year

Wrong. Please go through these links. India is part of those countries- "Your payments will continue even if you have been outside the U.S. for more than six full calendar months, if you are a citizen of one of the countries listed below, and the worker on whose record your benefits are based lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years or earned at least 40 credits under the U.S. Social Security system."
