    At the final chapter of the Unfinished Swan the king, aka Milton, describes how he was disgusted by the vines in his castle, so he decided to build a new one. Later he mentions that he was surrounded by dark waters, slowly awaiting his death. However, he then speaks of how nobody came to his funeral, except for the protagonist of the Unfinished Swan.
    So my interpretation of the story is that Milton was motivated to go down by the shore to build a sand castle, likely at night, only to be taken away by a wave which pulled him into the sea. This ended in him drowning, some place where he will probably never be found.
    I am not sure if my assumption is correct, but either way I am sure that he drowned.
    (Yes I am aware that this comment is awfully late)...

      I agree with you. While every Finch family member that died had a plausible and realistic cause of death, it's not difficult to assume that Milton simply dissapeared while exploring the area surrounding the house.
      It's a shame that they never got to really confirm what happened to him, but most of the family cases are open ended... He simply must got lost in the wilderness or dragged out by the tide just like his castle.

      You got a pretty good point there. It makes sense he got delusional like Lewis, but earlier than him. He being dragged by the sea is much more plausible reason why the body was never found.

    There is definitely something wrong with the Finches in their mental quarters: What kind of idea is that when Odin just decides to take his house on a journey across the sea? How could that family got a building permit to raise their house skywards in a rather diagonal axis ignoring all concerns for safety? How could parents have their son work on his personal record of skyswinging on a cliff, his leg in a cast? What kind of grandmother depicts the deaths of her children in her wallpaintings (train on one side, whales on the other, representing the final scenarios for Walter and Molly, respectively) ...

      It's heavily implied that Walter grew up already loving trains, given that when his room is shown in the Barbara cutscene, he has a train aesthetic to his room, and even in his bunker he has model trains and things of that nature. The train aesthetic in his room isn't Edie going in after the fact and repainting it, it's what it was to begin with. It's irony, not psychopathy.

    Well, some things to point out I wouldn't discredit your theory just yet:
    I actually have an adopted uncle who was diagnosed schizophrenic when he was 12. It may not be the norm, but it does happen. It ruined his future playing the piano. he was really, really good, but it hit him hard and relatively fast. Maybe it wasn't that specific illness, but there definitely was a lot of delusions/hallucinations going on.
    If one wants to talk triggers for Milton...I mean, his family was dying left and right, and grandma was probably glorifying their ends...thaaaatd prolly trigger a number of folks.
    (yeah, I still think grandma was also responsible for having a hand in a number of their deaths)

    As a psychotherapist, I would agree with the essence of this video. I think you have really good instincts. I definitely reflected on each Finch's mental state(s) while playing the game through. There's almost definitely aspects of mental health problems, in some members more than others. I didn't, however, think that you got it right with Milton and schizophrenia - at least not based on the evidence. Nor would I extend it to Edie without some blatant hint or concrete evidence. (A much likelier candidate for schizophrenia, or at least major depressive disorder, would be Lewis, in my opinion.) But as far as mental illness and disrupted mental wellness across the board, your instincts really seem to be spot-on.

    I think the curse IS the mental health. There's rampant disorders in my family(schizophrenia, autism, ptsd, addictions, etc) and honestly, if I had to put a word to it, curse wouldn't be far off. The way things are set up, with the curse following the family for such a long time, it could have been before mental health was treated as a real issue and not something superstitious or religious(like a curse.) The family in general seems very isolated so it could be that(save for the one brother,) no one was ever diagnosed or treated. The mental disorder being the curse that plagues the family just seems so fitting. It gives reason to a lot of things, in my opinion.

  • @melina84able

    Yeah I agree that the Finch family have mental illness that they heredited to their childrens, since mental illness are hereditary (I knew a bit about psychology because I studied the basics of it when I was studying Public Health in college). When I watch the game at first, I did believe that the family maybe have some magic power or something more sinister (like someone putting a curse on them because they've wronged someone in the past) since I thought it was like a horror game, but the more the story progresses it seemed to go towards more to a drama mistery (the only drama genre I like), more involving about the family roots and getting to know who you are kind of story with a great story telling. Anyway, it's just sad how the mental illness took so many lives of the family members (the Finch) and I could not pray & hope that the last Finch (the boy, Edith son) won't get it, but even he doesn't have the illness, it will mostly will heredited to the next generations (either second or third or fourth or so on), either way, the Finch could never escape from it, they could only prepare themself and find a way to handle the illness if one day one of them got it. Well I guess what you could take from the story is, learn from the past (your predecessors) and learn from their mistakes and don't repeat it. Be better. Well that applies to all conditions actually, not just for people who have mental illness backgrounds.
    BTW, great video man! And for a 17 years old you have an awesome analytic mind & very well spoken (both are very useful skills that will benefit you in the future). I have a feeling that you'll achive great things in the future. Good luck to you and hello from Indonesia 😘

      KnucklesUp one more thing dr. Knuckles, I think you should do theory (game or movie) videos like this a lot more because I think you're analysis are good and you presented it very well. You could never get enough of these game/movie theory videos/channels, they're just so interesting and made you think more about the game/video, I just love analyzing things and just finding out the background of things 😁

    • @KnucklesUp

      KnucklesUp ah shoot! Can't think of any right now, but lately I just watched the game Hello Neighbor and it just bugs me what the heck is that game about??! What was the mustache guy (neighbor) hiding so much that he's willing to kidnap his kid neighbor and build a fortress to kept him inside (not to mention the lack of other people or other neighbors that are visible), I guess the game is not perfect with (many) it's flaws and plus (I guess), but I'm just curious about the MOTIVE of that guy kidnapping & concealing his "secret" to never get out. But I dunno if that game is popular enough to be made into a video specifically discussing about it tho lol 😜
      Or you could do like a theory about how this game/movie connected or shared the same universe as another game/movie (could be one or more game/movies that are connected or shared the same universe), you know like how they said that the Pixar's movies (movie cartoons or what do they called it? CGI cartoons? Lol I dunno 😜) actually are in the same universe but have different timelines, also goes with the Disney's fairy tales movie cartoons are connected too (little mermaid, rapunzel, frozen, monster's university, etc.). Well something like that, I hope you get what I'm trying to say here lol, sorry since english is not my native language 😁
      But I think you should try with something more common/popular ones, like Coraline movie (one of my fave movie also), or about the FNAF game to test the water, see if people actually liking it and are you getting good feedback from it then you could escalate to more spesific movies or games or other things that you would like to share the theory about (depends on where do you want to take your channel towards). Wow sorry for rambling too much hahaha, sometimes I just get too excited when it comes to talking about games and movies, I just love them, so many things to explore 😁

    Milton's flip book is the start of his death flash back and the unfinished swan was the death flashback in its entirety only we don't see the real world perspective on it meaning Milton could have gone off the deep end in a big way and when the king jumps he willingly does it meaning Milton lost his purpose and decided to jump which explains why his body isn't found

    I don't think it necessary was mental illness. It may be just shared delusion (with I have no idea if classifies as mental illness so maybe I spoke too early). I think that most of the Finch family died from simple incidents but believing in the curse helped the rest to cope. I do believe that Edie wasn't mentally well and neglected her children. If you look at the family history, if not for the fact that Edie's kids died young, this would be a normal family. So I think she kinda accidentally created the curse.
    I believe that Milton and Lewis had just broad imagination - both "overused" it to cope with the loss of control they felt - they lost their father when Milton was 10 so he got into his imaginary world to cope and later Lewis got really unsatisfying and routine job (I actually sympathise with Lewis so freaking much). And they both dreamed of the same -being someone significant, someone who matters the most. I think Milton just wondered into the woods some day, as kids do, and got lost. The fact that they never found his body is not that weird - it happens even now. Lewis was just massively depressed and didn't like the reality so he dissociated.
    You can make the case for Edie because she had her own version of the world and basically wasn't able to care for her children. Dawn was probably so angry at her because both Milton and Lewis "adapted" Edie's imagination but ultimately got lost in it.
    Also, holy fuck 17? You sound older. But hey, I'm also 17, it's always a nice surprise to find random people (around) my age having similar interests! :D

    I feel like one other direction that the thory could take is that milton just ran away, and possibly became a famous artist of sorts, and it could lead into the other game, milton could have died, but could have also survived. in the whole king halucination thing, milton seems to be an adult, where in his flipbook, it clearly depicts him as a kid. it could be possible that milton is still in fact alive because of this difference

    I have my own theory about what happened with Milton, and it has to do with something I haven't seen too many people bring up: the dates. What do I mean? Here's the timeline presented in the game:
    Feb 22, 2002 - Sanjay, the father of Lewis, Milton and Edith dies in an earthquake at age 36. Some time later, mother
    Dawn brings her children back to the Finch house
    Oct 23, 2003 - Milton disappears at the age of 11, a year and 8 months after his father's death
    Take into account just how close the death of Sanjay and disappearance of Milton was, and you realize a lot of things:
    -Milton lost his father at the age of 10, obviously a troubling, if not traumatic, event
    -He is suddenly taken from the one place he called home and brought halfway around the world to the Finch house to live with a very eccentric great-grandma who not only refuses to clear out the old bedrooms to make room for the new family members, but instead adds more rooms onto the house
    -Milton and Lewis are told by Edie about all the fantastical ways every Finch has died (not exactly a healthy subject for a boy who recently lost his father)
    -The boys find the secret passages in the house and read the diaries/letters/etc of their deceased ancestors, prompting Milton to pay tribute to those stories by painting in the passages (a cat for Molly, a swing for Calvin, a pumpkin for Barbara)
    -It's clear that Dawn decided to homeschool her children, so they probably didn't have many friends their own age, if any
    -Edie, because she loves having another painter in the family, gifts Milton with a "castle", which secludes him from the rest of the family
    Really, while it is possible Milton had some sort of mental illness, I think he was mostly traumatized by his father's death, his mother moving the whole family away to a strange new place, being told so many fantastical stories about death by the eccentric old lady he had to live with, and then being secluded from both his family and from other people.
    In "The Unfinished Swan", it mentioned that the king (aka Milton) was upset over his first sandcastle getting destroyed by the waves. If Milton never went to the beach while he lived in India, then it could very well be assumed it wasn't until he was in Washington that he built his first sandcastle... and when you take into account all what he's had to deal with so far, and at such a young age too, it makes sense to assume that the sandcastle getting destroyed was the straw that broke the camel's back, which is what started Milton's desire to escape to a place where things "last."
    My theory is that Milton became obsessed with finding such a place, to the point where he mentally withdrew from reality and began to believe his own paintings/toys/models were becoming actual worlds. Also, take notice of how, in the flipbook, Milton paints a black doorway leading to an unknown world, and that when we (as Edith) go into his room, there is not only a mural with what is obviously the same door from the flipbook, but the actual bedroom door is also colored the same black and has the same kind of door handle.
    Finally, let's draw from a few other things from "The Unfinished Swan": Milton says he left his house at night (remember that when Edith goes into Milton's room, that is also at night; coincidence? Maybe, but still something worth noting) right after he heard a knocking and went through a door. He saw his own funeral, and he saw a monument of himself (similar to the one of his great-great grandfather, Odin Finch) sinking into the ocean.
    I believe that when Milton "heard" the knocking, he believed that his other world was calling to him, and that he could now leave. He created the flipbook to act as a farewell letter to his family, and then painted a door onto the mural. While in his mind, he opened the painted door and went into the new world, in reality, Milton opened his bedroom door was basically sleepwalking around, lost in his own thoughts/imaginations/delusions... and he ended up walking down to the beach where his obsession started... and drowned in the ocean, thus explaining why they never found his body... as well as the funeral scene that nobody but "Monroe" attended... because Milton had no funeral.
    (I put quotation marks around Monroe's name because I also believe that Monroe isn't actually Milton's son, but rather, just part of Milton's hallucination... possibly even another personality.)
    Of course, that begs the question about why Milton's body didn't simply wash ashore if he drowned. That can only lead to pure speculation, and the possibility that he never drowned... but still, the fact that Milton lives on an island and doesn't have much room to wander... plus there's the possibility his body could have been eaten by sea creatures... like Molly's hallucination. ^^

    Nice video. I only want to point out that there’s a difference between the letters/journals that were left and the animation in the game. The animation is implied to be the imaginings of Edith when she reads the words. When Edith describes the last night in her journal, she recounts the words of Edie’s story. The idea that Edie saw things she’d forgotten existed is plausible. It’s possible that some of the items that were brought over in the house and have been in the ocean for 80 years could still exist and be somewhat recognizable at the bottom of the ocean. The written words never say that she saw the fence or the light on in the house. The animation is the imaginings of Edith who read those words and visualized those events. As a result, I’m not sure it’s fair to say that anything based on the animation indicates anything about the mental health of anyone other than perhaps Edith. I do believe, however that, “the curse” is likely a family propensity toward mental health problems.

Some adults have trouble looking taking criticism from a trusted source, especially now in a day and age where ignorance and misinformation spreads like wildfire. I would say it is still possible that it could be schizophrenia, not as likely as you made it out initially but I agree that it is most likely some sort of mental illness.

      It's either because she was an asshole who wanted to mess up her daughter as her last act of parenting or, which I think is more likely, the developers told her she had to otherwise there would be no game and thus no royalties for her and she needed the money to pay her hospital bills. The same applies to Edith Jr. only it was way more dramatic, as she was signing the contract while giving birth, just seconds before dying due to hemorrhaging.

    In the fandom page, if you look on edith finch's page, you can see Monroe is edith's nephew.
    As KnucklesUp said, the king is possibly milton.
    I think Monroe is the king's (Milton's) son= MIlton Didn't Die!!!
    That means that there are two or possibly three Finches alive: Christopher, Monroe and possibly Milton.
    I really hope you will see my comment and maybe do a video about what i wrote.

    Coming back a year later I agree with your first theory with schizophrenia. It actually make sense and Milton could have possibly got it at a young age because of the big percentage. Gregory and Barbara also could experience it but in leaning more toward Gregory being born with it then Barbara's death because Barbara's death could have been an home invasion but the mystery about that is why did monsters kill her if there not real so that leads me to Barbara had a hallucination that someone came in the house and killed her and she could have died of a heart attack because of the fear of the hallucinated monsters but I dont strongly think that was the case Ricky could have killed her and vanished but he wouldn't get far because of his injury so that's what make me believe Barbara had it. Gregory's case I really do believe he has Schizophrenia because of the dancing toys and the becoming a frog and he drowned but he's at a young maybe to young age to have it. But what confused me in the game was Dawn calling Edith Sr. Grandma. I thought Sven was married to Edith. And do you know who played the whole game and saw all points of views of their stories and deaths?

    Ya I'm late to this but ... I wanted to share my theory and I do not know what milton had but what if afer he started getting the illusions he starts to believe in them and get lost in them like Lewis and wanders into the woods which only added more to the madness, but he was found and brought to an aslyam or mental facility and Eddie is the only one who knew. She didn't tell anyone because she didn't want it to happen again(like how dawn was about walter) and because she probably also had problems. In this aslyam or mental facility an older milton probably 20s to 30s meets the kid from the unfinished swan who was brought there do to trauma do from his recently departed mother. At this point milton was mad and he believed in his kingdom and himself as the king. The young boy who was most likely there do to trauma was engulfed into the story milton had made and sort of added himself into it creating the game the Unfinished Swan.

    My theory is that he is merely a kid with a highly overactive imagination that is only fueled by his grandmothers delusions. She builds him a castle, which causes the kid to have almost no differentiation between reality and fantasy (I mean imagine being 10-11 and living in that castle, especially as a somewhat talented painter) and shortly after this he goes missing, likely as you said into the forest where he is probably mauled by some sort of animal. Very sad. This game is great though, probably the best narrative driven game I’ve ever played.

      My theory is a bit different: there was a bunch of a poisonous flower called foxglove on the property of the house. More than what grows naturally. And it induces horrible sickness and hallucinations.
      And Milton was 10 or 11 when he disappeared, which is when kids want to explore their options a bit better.
      My theory is that Milton snuck out one night, and ate some of the flowers, and started hallucinating, and soon fell off a cliff or at least had walked into the ocean, and died.
      And they never found his body.

  • @mysteriousnova58
    @mysteriousnova58 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    It could be that he just vanished. A lot of people goe missing in forests and national parks, and are never found. Missing 411 has a lot of these cases; it's an interesting thing to look into. Milton could have wandered a little too far into the forest, and died there.

    • @mrmasterpeels
      @mrmasterpeels 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I also think he could be dead somewhere inside the house. In Barbara's story when she was talking to her boyfriend she said that her dad liked to build puzzles and secret passages. As you're going through the house you see that Milton has been exploring all the passages. He could have found an area and gotten stuck, starving to death or somehow getting killed. Dawn then sealed up the rooms so edith wouldn't get lost in the house in the same way.

Foxglove is a very poisons flower if consumed. it could have been possible Milton wandered to far like you said, and maybe not very educated ate them causing him to die

    This was a great theory!! It was interesting and realistic. I really was kind of disappointed that everything in Edith finch was realistic, and then there’s just that this guys just went through a magical door. This helps me believe in the realistic ness of this (amazing game) However, I have a question. You said that the ages are 15-25 ( I don’t remember exactly what you said) but is that the prime time to develop it and you can develop at a different age, or are those the only age you can develop it? Thanks

    • @PolandSphere
      @PolandSphere 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Definitely not the only ages, but the prime ages are 15-25. Milton was 11 years old and if this theory states correct, the fact that he would've had schizophrenia would prove that point. I am also really tired right now so this probably doesn't make sense.

  • @RisingBee
    @RisingBee 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    i really enjoyed this video! personally, for lewis(i forgot his name so hopefully this is it??) i wouldnt say he had schizophrenia. to me he seemed to be more along the lines of a maladaptive daydreamer. obv he daydreamed constantly at his job so i would assume hed continue daydreaming outside of that as well. im no professional but thats how i see it! as for almost everyone in the family having schizophrenia, tbh majority of the time they were probably just risktakers/eccentric/etc. in terms of the boy who died in the storm i think he really was just a moody boy.

    • @KnucklesUp
      @KnucklesUp  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm not a doctor either so take this with a grain of salt but I think the line "my imagination is as real as my body" really distinguishes schizophrenia over daydreaming in this case, but I do see where you are coming from.

    • @KatherinaBathory
      @KatherinaBathory 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@KnucklesUp but this is why I don't think it's schizophrenia. He is able to distinguish his imagination from reality. He says that his imagination seems more real to him, but he still acknowledges it as imagination. So it's not a hallucination, it's his imagination taking over. To the point that his imagination was better than reality and his own mental world was a preferred reality than the real one. And this is true for a lot of people who are suicidal. Being suicidal doesn't mean you want death per se. What you want is an escape. So it's fitting that his suicide scene is actually "happy" in his mind. He is escaping a reality that seems unbearable to him.

    Is this thread still active at all? I just found it and am blown away by the keen observation and detail that went into this stellar review. I DO have one thought - an odd one, I admit - which would only apply to the 'new' house. But is it possible that some substance, perhaps a gaseous emission from some organic matter beneath the house, could have slowly caused all who dwelt there, to begin hallucinating, mildly at first, not noticeable, but cumulatively causing a mental break within the inhabitants? I am NOT discounting the genetic mental illness component, but just wonder if there might have been some natural, organic element which caused or contributed to the growing levels of mental illness / inability to discern reality from fantasy, thus contributing to the sort of self-fulfilled prophecies of a 'curse'? I would be interested and appreciative of any thoughts. And yes, I am one of those sho subbed to this channel based on the Edith Finch game. Thanks!

    Milton is the king from the unfinished swallow and in the unfinished swallow you play as Monroe who is Miltons son (and the son of his wife who is the 'female version of him') and he passes on his paintbrush which indicates that both him and his wife have the same issues and pass them onto his son Monroe, it is indicated that the king dies at the end of the unfinished swan and so we know that Milton doesn't die until then which means when he went missing he must've gone somewhere especially to atleast procreate and marry.

    The game was developed by people who recieved an education in gaming, studying early uses of film as a tool in mass phsycology using a family who have a historical connection to people who had viking ancestory . If you study a Kubrick film 2001, or even better a Polanskis rosemarys baby youll get the idea.
    It has references to different elements from the sixties. The story also has references to a novel about a similar subject, too kill a mockingbird. Full metal jacket eyes wide shut covered the subject somewhat as well.
    So what is the curse? It is biblical and i leave that too you people to figure out and decide.

    I prefer the theory that Milton got swept out to sea when making his sand castle. But he didn’t tell anyone where he was going hence how he disappeared. But rather than drowning he got saved by a fishing boat, and he had gotten Dissociative amnesia. Meaning he couldn’t remember everything so he ended up probably gotten adopted by a new family somewhere else. This is where he grew up and eventually met Monroe’s mother. Thus the events of the unfinished Swan.

    I watched a video a little bit before your original analysis. It was titled The Villain of Edith Finch by Joseph Anderson. It was really good too, I suggest watching it. Basically what he stated in the video was that the “curse” that the family suffers from obviously was not a legitimate curse, nor was it just crippling bad luck. It was instead just some sort of aspect that ran throughout the family that caused them to act before thinking on it. For example, the deaths of Gregory and Molly. If Edie hadn’t sent Molly to bed without dinner, she wouldn’t have eaten the things that ultimately led to her death (assuming she died from poisoning). And of course, you should never leave a young child in the bath by themselves, let alone a baby.

    Don’t worry too much about whether you’re “right” or “wrong” about your theory. It’s not important! Everyone has to interpret what is happening here, and simply having an interesting and well supported idea is valuable. Google “death of the author”.
    Please keep writing / recording interesting analysis of video games. It’s a niche field now, but growing. If you’re on top of it, you might be able to make a living out of it.
    Again, great video. Keep it up. I’m looking forward to more.

    I am not that great with biology, but I can maybe add an aftermath of the Finch family. I suspect that if the children grow up to marry people without schizophrenia it has the ability to phase out of the family line overtime. Take for instance an American bulldog; it has been getting a slowly more pulled out face over the generations because humans are breeding it with the same kind of dog, but the ones with the less pushed in faces. Replace the faces with a mental disorder, and this could be a fixed problem. I am just ranting biology, but I can't write enough to make a video on this, and it is basic biology but I can say this is a potential solution. All we need now is for the team to hire me and a sequel to come out written by myself.
