My dark brown hair was highlighted about 2 months ago. I paid over $300 for the service and I could barely stand to look at it. I looked like a Jersey Shore wannabe with tacky, brassy highlights. With about $12, your amazing video, and the help of my boyfriend, I now have beautifully toned highlights and perfectly blended roots. You are helping thousands of women fix their botched dye jobs! Thank you for sharing this. May the hair gods bless you, always :)
Same i just went to the salon for the first time, they did a terrible job, i do it better myself and now I’m trying to fix my brassy hair. Hopefully this shadow root method works for me
Thank you for this! This happened to me a week ago! The lady did “bayalage” but I look like I have brassy blonde (that was suppose to be bronde) hair from 2002. I look like a bumble bee. Excited to get my hair fix today with this !
I know this video is old but I just want to say thank you! I went to my stylist to get my balayage refreshed since it grew out, she left me with orange roots and orangey red highlights. My balayage colors are ash tones so this freaked me out. She put a toner and it barely made a difference. I went back a 3rd time because I couldn’t live like this and she said there was nothing she could do. I refused to believe that so I went to a different salon and this stylist, well she evened out the orange roots however she added more highlights so now I looked like a raccoon. I was left with stripey yellow/orange highlights. Sitting at home in tears with no hope left searching TH-cam, I found your video. I had half a bottle of wella 2n which is close to my base color, and seeing how easy your technique was, I decided to try to “melt” it. At this point I had nothing left to lose. It worked! My hair looks beautifully balayaged again! From now on I’m going to maintain my hair myself since these 2 professionals screwed my hair up. Thank you! Thank you! 💗
Next time that happens, ask for a refund! I just had a hair disaster from a "professional' but I kindly and firmly asked for my money back, and she gave it back. I needed it to buy stuff to fix my hair! All this lady was going to do it wash my hair with clarifying shampoo after she left spots all over my head, and made my hair also way too dark and red when it was supposed to be mushroom brown. My hair was all over platinum blonde and now its completely ruined!
Thank you. Paid hundreds and did not get even close to what I wanted, I had orange and brass but what you’ve shared is simple and I got that brass and orange gone so my hair looks better with my natural Smokey ash roots and I’ve wanted this for over a decade so thank you so much . You’re very beautiful and your hair is amazing xx
I’ve watched so many videos on root smudge and toning, and this by far as been the most helpful video for me as a non-professional doing DIY. Thank you! 💖
I did this and started feeling like I was doing a really sloppy job. I was scared. Well it came out beautiful just like yours! The ashy color combination and the combing was what I think makes this work so well. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 💜
10 volume developer deposits only (meaning it is being added to the hair) 20, 30 and higher developer is stronger and is used for lifting color so when used for deposit only, it may lighten the hair one shade because of the strength. Hope that helps!
Been looking for the perfect video and yours came to my rescue. I paid over $300 to get my hair cut and highlighted and I hate it. I really hope this works out for me. Love the beautiful transformation. God Bless.
Thank you for sharing your technique! I spent over $300 at the salon for balayage and am always left feeling unsatisfied. Followed your process and it looks so much better. 💝💝💝
I tried this on my way brassy roots blended into blonder hair. I used a brown toner and combed it down just like shown and it worked wonders!! I don’t have to go back to the salon just to get results I don’t like. I love my hair now thanks to you!! This technique worked amazingly! Thank you so much!!!!!
Thank you for this video! It saved my hair color! I paid $300 for a bad balayage..it came out brassy and too light at the top. This was exactly what I needed. I wanted to darken and blend the roots and tone my blond color. So happy with how my hair looks now!! I love how your video was simple and easy to follow!
I just want to THANK YOU for this tutorial! I did exactly what you showed here and my results are gorgeous! Finally, something that worked! Keep making videos. 🙏❤️
this is a wayy better way than doing the root smudge w/ demi permanent color, it's suuuuch a nightmare & doesn't look pretty getting dark blotches on your blonde highlights. demi permanent is like straight up hair dye, where it lands it's painting dark w/ no time to wash & fade it out 😭 thank yeww!
Thank you so much, I spent $400 trying to get this color and all I got was ugly yellow hair I was very disappointed. Going to try this tomorrow :) at this point I have nothing to lose lol
This turned out so pretty. I wish I could post a pic of how gorgeous and seamless this turned out on my hair. I had to use T15 which is a beige brown but I have never loved my hair so much. Thank you so much for this tutorial🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you so much for the video and sharing the exact products used in the description. I went to Sally and bought all the products for $20 and tried this at home today and it worked wonders. My brunette hair had highlights that I got done in a salon but was too yellow for my liking.
Short straight to the point video! Loved how you explained it…sounds manageable for someone trying this at home and your looks amazing! Thank you for posting this! ❤
Thanks for this video! I'm going to try this process on my hair. I just bleached my roots all the way to my scalp after letting them grow out about 2 inches with my natural ash brown color which now has more grays than ever before. Lol! I was going to try and live in a full blonde for a while, but now think I want to do a root melt like yours and then tone down my length.
dont worry about the angle, ypu did great on this tutorial compared to the other vid I watched. geezzzz the lady just kept talking without actually coloring her hair.. lols. was borrd so i skipped and came accross your tutorial. you made it seem way too easy. will probably try it this weekend. wish me luck!
Gorgeous and your hair looks very healthy! 💖 What is the natural level of your hair? 1, 2? And also will this 4A look with a reddish cast or look like a cool brown? Most browns look reddish cause of the mixture of the color, I just need to know cause I'm so sick of browns leaving that reddish cast on my level 2 hair, thank you!
I spent over $200 for a balayage that I hated..it looked like she just used bleach without toning it..i didn't have time for her to fix cause it was my nephew's wedding...I ended up not going and cried all day cause I hated my hair so much..I can't wait to try this on my shit hair today girl. Thanks!
I tried this and followed every step and let me tell you I AM SO HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS. Ash Brown is my natural hair color but ever since I got highligths its been a nightmare. I had to cut my hair short trying to get rid of them but the rest of the hair would keep turning orange and looking brassy. Purple shampoo and other dyes did not work but this one certainly covered everything and gave me my Ashy lovely brown! Thank you for the tutorial :)
Alexa Ovalles this sounds like a very stupid question but do you wash out the base color before putting the toner on or do you add the toner once you’ve done all the ash brown and just blend it all together and then wash it? I’m confused if you need to wash it in between each step?
Hi Cristen, I didn't do the toner part, I actually just used the brown ash base and spread it towards the ends but without touching where I had some leftovers of highlights. Also, I bought the liquid bottle of the dye instead of the cream cause it was easier to mix. The product does smell really strong but it covers your current color almost as soon as it touches your hair. I washed the brown after waiting almost 45 minutes and that obviously touched the ends so the ends were dyed a little but no dark brown.
That’s the same question I have. Do you do the roots leave it in and then work your way up with the ash toner. Comb it down from root to get a good blend and then wash it? Or do you wash it in between the toners
You made what I’m trying to do so easy best video! Question?!?! Did you wash out the 4A then put the toner? Or did you put on back to back and then just wash one time?
After watching so many videos this is the only one theT tells exactly what’s needed! Gosh! The root color it’s hard to find though Sally’s don’t have that one blue box! Thanks
Easy video to follow, and on that note I’m now headed to the beauty supply store and start this fabulous hair dying process! Thank you for this tutorial & btw your hair looks amazing!!!
If u used a permanent color, how would you touch up your blonde hair later? Use demi color guys! Most of you probably know how long it takes to go from dark brown to blonde! Good luck
Thank you so much Tien. I saw your video and decided to give it a try. It turned out really great. I love it and I will do it for my sister too! Thanks for your video!
how far down do you bring the comb with the dye? all the way to the ends of your hair or do you stop earlier? Couldn't really tell...results look amazing!
I tried this technique on my curly hair and I forgot to brush it first so the knots messed it up 😂😂😂 I think next time I will just straighten my hair first to make it easier. also, my hair is lighter than hers so I bought 6A instead of 4A. However, I would have liked it a little darker so maybe next time I will do 4A. For more ashiness I bought the violet blue toning drops from wella and put a few drops in the 6A. Strangely, it seems like my natural roots didn't pick up the toning drops very well, but the bleached parts of my hair did. So the roots are more brassy than the middle. Keep that in mind if y'all try this . Lastly, I've heard toner is supposed to go on wet hair, so I wet the ends of my hair before starting this.
Beautiful! Looks professional. I have some T11 (pale beige blonde) and I think I’m going to do a 7a (medium ash blonde) on my roots since my hair is pale pale platinum blonde!! Thanks! I’ve read not to use permanent hair dye on the roots as a root shadow or root melt...but yours turned out gorgeous. How does it fade? Is it pretty much like the beginning of the video? I thought that looked good too; no harsh lines! Thanks!
How on earth did a level 4 go on so light? Your hair must be in very healthy condition, because it appears to have resisted grabbing which gave you more of a level 7 result. Wow beautiful! *Warning bleach blondes. If your hair is dry and porous, do not use a level 4 permanent color. You will get mud, and it will go brassy orange when you highlight over this colored part*
Perfection. For the roots, you used the whole bottle and how much developer did you actual do? I have the same length of hair you have. Do I pour the developer into the bottle only one time? I’m going to buy this now. Let me know. Ty this is one of the BEST hair tutorial
Hi!! Now I've watched this video at least 10 X now. But my only question is when u used the 4a/237 did it keep ur roots dark dark or lighten them up alot... ??
This is the exact tutorial I was looking for alllll over TH-cam! I did something similar to this last night. I’ll follow this exactly when I freshen my colour up next time. P.S. are these products you use available to non professionals? I’ve been using drugstore products 🤦♀️. They work but obviously are not as high grade as what you are using.
Thank you for the video. My hair is balayaged like yours. I have some greys coming in and my roots are growing. I have a question, I was told that if my hair dye ( brown just like yours) for my roots touches the highlighted blond parts of my hair, it will turn it warm. I didn't see that happen for you. Like when you comb it in....it is necessary so it looks blended. Any idea what they are talking about. Also- was told not to use an ash brown...as it will turn the blonde green if it touches it. Know anything about any of this?!
I relate to this so much
Same i just went to the salon for the first time, they did a terrible job, i do it better myself and now I’m trying to fix my brassy hair. Hopefully this shadow root method works for me
Thank you for this! This happened to me a week ago! The lady did “bayalage” but I look like I have brassy blonde (that was suppose to be bronde) hair from 2002. I look like a bumble bee. Excited to get my hair fix today with this !
I am in the same position. Exactly $400 and for what? I hope this video works for me 😢
I love this comment, I am trying to do the same over here! lol will let yall know how it comes out!
Even though your positioning was a bit off, this was one of the best hair tutorial videos! You were concise and to the point!
ooooooooooooool
I know this video is old but I just want to say thank you! I went to my stylist to get my balayage refreshed since it grew out, she left me with orange roots and orangey red highlights. My balayage colors are ash tones so this freaked me out. She put a toner and it barely made a difference. Same happened to me!!! good to know that this worked on someone that had the same problem!!
Next time that happens, ask for a refund! I just had a hair disaster from a "professional' but I kindly and firmly asked for my money back, and she gave it back. I needed it to buy stuff to fix my hair! Thank you. Paid hundreds and did not get even close to what I wanted, I had orange and brass but what you’ve shared is simple and I got that brass and orange gone so my hair looks better with my natural Smokey ash roots and I’ve wanted this for over a decade so thank you so much . Thank you!!!!! After going to a hairdresser twice to get that ashy toned balayage, I still had a brassy tone and this worked like a charm!
It is now 2020 and I’m in Quarantine, and my dark roots are definitely poppin’ lol. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR THIS!
If you don't want lift with the 4A.. use a 10 vol developer it deposits only
Kimberly Watson thanks never knew this
What does that mean, deposits only
10 volume developer deposits only (meaning it is being added to the hair) 20, 30 and higher developer is stronger and is used for lifting color so when used for deposit only, it may lighten the hair one shade because of the strength. Hope that helps!
Been looking for the perfect video and yours came to my rescue. I paid over $300 to get my hair cut and highlighted and I hate it. I really hope this works out for me. Love the beautiful transformation. God Bless.
Thankyou so much!! 10 videos later and I found someone using actual toner instead of hair dye!!! Thankyou so much 💕
Thank you for sharing your technique! I spent over $300 at the salon for balayage and am always left feeling unsatisfied. Followed your process and it looks so much better. 💝💝💝
Zanzibear829 same here :(
Same here!
This is the best balayage video I have watched.

I wanted to darken and blend the roots and tone my blond color. So happy with how my hair looks now!! I love how your video was simple and easy to follow!
The best video I found on TH-cam about how to get ride of brassiness. Everyone else is just bullshiting! You made it so simply and easy to follow ❤
I find those professionals are hard to understand. It was so easy to get what products I need in this one!♥️
20 VIDEOS LATER!!! Ty for showing what many of us what to see and doing it quickly and properly. Ty beautiful ♥️🙌🏽
Omg for real!!!!!! Where the hell was her dam video! Ive watched dozens and this girl has the easiest and prettiest results by far!
How did it turn out girls?
I just want to THANK YOU for this tutorial! I did exactly what you showed here and my results are gorgeous! Finally, something that worked! Keep making videos. 🙏❤️
this is a wayy better way than doing the root smudge w/ demi permanent color, it's suuuuch a nightmare & doesn't look pretty getting dark blotches on your blonde highlights. demi permanent is like straight up hair dye, where it lands it's painting dark w/ no time to wash & fade it out 😭 thank yeww!
I've watched hundreds of videos and this is the best video simple straight to the point thank you my dear.
Thank you so much, I spent $400 trying to get this color and all I got was ugly yellow hair I was very disappointed. Going to try this tomorrow :) at this point I have nothing to lose lol
Same thing happen to me!
I paid $200 for my daughters root touch up & toner and it looked awful too! Came home and did it myself using Wella toner and it came out gorgeous!
You truly just saves my hair from the worst chunky at home hi-lites ever! Thank you!!!
I just got ugly chunky hi lights. How did you fix?
Thank you so much for the video and sharing the exact products used in the description. I went to Sally and bought all the products for $20 and tried this at home today and it worked wonders. My brunette hair had highlights that I got done in a salon but was too yellow for my liking.
This is still the best video and easiest technique on TH-cam. I would love to see what you’re doing now. I’ll go look!
Insanely pretty results! 😍🏅

Short straight to the point video! Loved how you explained it…sounds manageable for someone trying this at home and your looks amazing! Thank you for posting this! ❤
So pretty! I would love to see a video on how you did the highlights!!!
Thanks for this video! I'm going to try this process on my hair. Note...
Use the bottle of color to measure the developer instead of pouring.
I did this and my hair looks amazing!!!
I have watched so many videos and yours was the best! You ended up with professional results!
You did great on the video!! And thanks for being specific on the shades/colors you used and the amounts. It’s looks great on you!!
This is the best and most helpful video I've watched, and it helped me do my own hair at home perfectly! Thank you so much!!!
Just mind-blowingly gorgeous. I wish I had your skills! 💓
Great results. I have sharp lines from a bad balayage i got done. Gonna try this!
Great video. I have a question though, why was 20 volume used for the 4 level base? Wouldn't a 10 volume be bette
Nice blend! I am doing mine lighter brown at roots and brighter blond. U did great job and tips!
I followed this tutorial and my hair came out so perfect. Thank you!
Best video ever explaining how to color melt ..thx
This is one of the best
And really for the lazy girl like me that hates sectioning and stuff ..
Im def gonna try this
🤩 wow! Amazing tutorial . Thank you for sharing this video ❤
Well my comment is very late 😅 but I just came across your video, it's never too late to say you did a wonderful job, your final colour is gorgeous 😍
I’ve been dyeing and bleaching my hair for years at home. Great technique! Love this this video!
I spent over $200 for a balayage that I hated..it looked like she just used bleach without toning it..i didn't have time for her to fix cause it was my nephew's wedding...I ended up not going and cried all day cause I hated my hair so much..I can't wait to try this on my shit hair today girl. Thanks!

Cristen Sullivan you do the ash brown toner, comb it down, don’t wash it out then add the ash blonde toner and comb down the brown it blend it
That’s the same question I have. Do you do the roots leave it in and then work your way up with the ash toner. Comb it down from root to get a good blend and then wash it? Or do you wash it in between the toners

Beautiful blending technique!
This color works well!
Awesome!! I did exactly this and it turned out perfectly! Thank you girl!
After watching so many videos this is the only one theT tells exactly what’s needed! Gosh! The root color it’s hard to find though Sally’s don’t have that one blue box! Thanks
Wow It turned out really pretty!!! I'm going to try this technique out! I experiment with my hair a lot and I wish it turned out this good lol :)
Did it turn out good? I was thinking of trying it out for myself soon!
Best tutorial ever! So simple and definitely a life saver!!
Easy video to follow, and on that note I’m now headed to the beauty supply store and start this fabulous hair dying process! Thank you for this tutorial & btw your hair looks amazing!!!
So how did it turn out? :)
Thank you so much. It’s been the most helpful video for the toning ever I’m following you😊
I'm trying this tonight! Sally's is open for curb side pick up! Woohoo thank you
If u used a permanent color, how would you touch up your blonde hair later? Use demi color guys! Most of you probably know how long it takes to go from dark brown to blonde! Good luck
Your video was very easy to follow along! Thank you!! Also, is there a reason you used t18 instead of t14?
Michelle Phan t14 is targeted for orange brassy hair and t18 is for yellow brassy hair :)
Thank you so much Tien. I saw your video and decided to give it a try. It turned out really great. I love it and I will do it for my sister too! Thanks for your video!
Muchas gracias por compartir tus ideas !! Lo hice y me encantó el resultado 😍😘
how far down do you bring the comb with the dye? all the way to the ends of your hair or do you stop earlier? Couldn't really tell...results look amazing!
Question: after doing your roots, you don't wash that out first before doing the highlights?
Nope. You blend the root color and toner where they meet.
AMAZING THANK YOU! Is the 4n color a toner or a demi? I need to fix a bad dye Job and I want to use a subtle color for the roots
Thanks!
Med as brown toner. I will try. I been looking for a toner just to lift my black root without using any kind of bleach. Thank you
Would this work just as easy for blending in the demarcation line of my root to my platinum blonde ? Tired of bleaching the root!
I love how simple you did this. Thank you!!!
Love it! It looks so good! I'm doing this to my hair this weekend thanks
Hands down best video out here thank you so much!💗
Perfect video for what I was looking for!!! Thank you!!! I have been doing my own hair and needed a better example for next time.
Shruffle Love the 4 is on her roots and the toner t18 is on her ends
Perfection. For the roots, you used the whole bottle and how much developer did you actual do? I have the same length of hair you have. Do I pour the developer into the bottle only one time? I’m going to buy this now. Let me know. Ty this is one of the BEST hair tutorial
You’re so smart it’s amazing thank you for sharing
Hi!! Now I've watched this video at least 10 X now. But my only question is when u used the 4a/237 did it keep ur roots dark dark or lighten them up alot... ??
Wow u saved my life i loove u so much easist thtorial i ever wstched wow thank you so much
Dam your work looks professional its beautiful
This is the exact tutorial I was looking for alllll over TH-cam! I did something similar to this last night. I’ll follow this exactly when I freshen my colour up next time.
P.S. are these products you use available to non professionals? I’ve been using drugstore products 🤦♀️. They work but obviously are not as high grade as what you are using.
these are all available at Sally’s!! (available online America and Canada)
Jennifer Kim oh Canada also? Perfect 😊
Hey!!! What color extensions would you buy for this color hair? For micro link!!? Amazing work girl ❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing, I am trying to tone my hair. This is very helpful 😁
I hope that you're using the new Guy Tang shades. They're super ashy for brown hair.
Thanks! It worked...you save my hair!!
Great video u explained exactly what I needed to know ! Thanks 😁
Ty! Very easy and best tutorial! Will give it a try tomorrow 😘🥰😍
Thank You!! Even tho my hair is different in color and texture, your technique is the bomb!
You got me to subscribe on this one. Very helpful video!
What happens if the color and timer touch? Does it turn Orange?
Thank you for the video. My hair is balayaged like yours. I have some greys coming in and my roots are growing. I have a question, I was told that if my hair dye ( brown just like yours) for my roots touches the highlighted blond parts of my hair, it will turn it warm. I didn't see that happen for you. Like when you comb it in....it is necessary so it looks blended. Any idea what they are talking about. Also- was told not to use an ash brown...as it will turn the blonde green if it touches it. Know anything about any of this?!
Do u still have to do your highlights often with this method
Question....what did you use to highlight your hair?
You look gorgeous!
It looks great. But did u wet the bottom part of ur hair before toner? Thanks ! Love the outcome 👍♥️
Beautiful, looks like a salon
Will this technique cover gray roots? I love the color but have some gray roots
ang galing mo po sissy. love your hair too
Wow! Thanks you save me a lot of money!!! Blessings to you 🙏
