To list the UV-K5 as "Best" is a joke .
I have it, and the chip in it is simply to weak and the HF adaption is just for receiving DSB really. So it is a fun hack with severe limitations due to the VHF/UHF FM nature of the radio.
But I am sure this is just a babystep towards custom made handheld radios with powerful chips and proper SSB transmission on the upper HF bands.

thanks for your comment however no one said that it is the best overall. I have it in the list as the best budget pick not in the best in general

@@la7dfa Bro, the UV-K5 is like 20 bucks! it is cheaper than an XL pepperoni pizza! for me that counts a lot!

@@RicardoAlonso_Art Yes it is good for the price. But for me it is only usable on 2m/70 FM. If I want cheap receiver on HF SSB I rather buy a SDR dongle or even better a RSP1A SDR with good dynamic range. Then you can listen to whatever you like with a good outdoor wire antenna.

Gotta laugh. My Kenwood is a brand new Corvette. A China cheapie is a 1972 AMC Gremlin. A Corvette level radio doesn't have cheap direct conversion receive, my Corvette has double conversion on band A and triple on band B. Plus it doesn't transmit spurious harmonic pollution all over the radio spectrum. Although I agree with his Yaesu FT5-DR choice. I'm planning to get one.
