    The best ending is the one where the band starts to look at each waiting for anybody to take the initiative and nod.

    What a talented human being Jacob Dupre is, I can listen to him play and talk all day long! He's got such a great vocabulary stemming from so many genres, very impressive fella -

  • @JacobDupre
    @JacobDupre 6 ปีที่แล้ว +88

    Piece of advice: Just because a cliche is a cliche doesn’t mean you get to ignore it...it’s still part of the musical language and therefore, regardless of your own artistic opinion, you should strive to know as much about the language as possible so you can converse fluently with other musicians. Now, if you only want to create music for yourself...meaning you don’t need to learn to speak it with others or you constantly want to invent your own musical languages...creating music that is always new and genre-breaking, then this advice will probably not mean much to you. However, if you give greater value to being a more complete musician who can drift between different styles with ease, then this advice should be a main part of your daily practice.

    • @jakestewartmusic
      @jakestewartmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Even if you think these endings are cliche or they're not of interest to you musically, learning them shows you what to avoid! Knowledge is power and in this case, knowledge of common musical language is creative power.

    • @JacobDupre
      @JacobDupre 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There’s also the idea that many people could be at an earlier stage in learning music and would be very happy and content to just be able to perform standards from jazz/pop/rock/country at a better level...they will not see learning these as a waste, but as a step forward.

    • @jakestewartmusic
      @jakestewartmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JacobDupre Yep, that too. Being someone who ends up playing a lot of different genres with different bands, I totally see the value in these. I hope Sweetwater does even more videos like this because I think a lot of folks who want to become well-rounded players could get a lot of use out of this

    Here’s one the Beatles used very early on. The outdo to “ Tell Me Why “ it’s in the key of D . I’m doing this off top of my head. It’s coming off of the V chord ( A ) . Maybe it’s a Bm-Ab-E-A-D . I should listen to it. Two beats on Bm-Bb ,and one beat on E-A-D . Very jazzy sounding for a pop song .

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's Bm Bm, Bb Bb (I think your Ab was a typo?), Asus4 A, D. The pairs of chords not separated by a comma are a dotted quarter note followed by a dotted half note. You're right, it's a cool ending and an early tip off-that the Beatles would turn into leaders, not followers.
      There are lots of ways to season it slightly differently, like putting the last A chord over an E (or Eb) bass, or fooling with the rhythm.

    Another common ending along these lines would be starting on F# (in the key of C) going down chromatically, or circle of 5ths (or a combination of the two) to C.

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. And (for the benefit of others reading this) the reason it works just as well when you combine the two versions is that the chromatic version is just a circle of 5ths sequence where every second jump is substituted by its tritone partner (a flattened 5th higher or lower)

      The first one's an old cliche ending that's been around for a few generations. It was always played on the Muppet Show in the '80's, as one example. The second one has been around probably even longer---it goes by the name "Shave and a Haircut--Two Bits!" There's an absolutely hilarious take on this in the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" You can find it here on TH-cam, just look for the scene where Judge Doom is looking for Roger in a bar and is tapping it out on the walls.

    This audio needs to be compressed, my speakers almost blew after adjusting for the talking and then the band came in.

    Oh dear god no, PLEASE think up real freakin' endings to your songs. And also, no fade outs.

      chill, these are just tools and alternatives from specific genres you may never consider just because you're not writing necessarily on that genre

      This isn’t really for composing your own music. It’s for sitting in on a jam night. If everyone knows these you can play something appropriate at the end of a blues jam or something and everyone can follow without rehearsals first.

    So yes, absolutely know these endings, but please learn how to spell your chords correctly! Db7 has a Cb not a B... for example... :P

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea. Aimee had a great vid recently which made spelling notes in chords very easy to understand. Basically, notes in chords need to have the sharps and flats for the triad notes adjusted so that pairs of alphabetic letters have exactly one letter between them, like A C E for a minor chord, A C# E for a major chord, not A Db E (because D and E are next to each other in the alphabet). When a seventh or ninth gets added, they should be one letter away from the tonic, so in Bethan's example, if D was the tonic, D7 would have a C in it which is OK, and Db must have a Cb in it (not a B, because that is two letters away from D).
      The main reason is so that when the chords are notated, the triads look like triads: if one note is on a line (or a space), so will all the other notes be. Otherwise intervals of a third may look like a second or a fourth, which makes sightreading even more difficult than it is already.
      It is probably too obvious to point out (except for raw beginners) that it is only the alphabetic letter 'value' of a note which determines where it is placed relative to the lines of the musical staves, and that's why the choice of letters matters.

    Well, thats 5 cliched pop/entertainer/function/talkshow band endings played for clueless and often drunk audiences that only value light and meaningless entertainment and distraction in music. Not universal by any means.

    • @jakegreene4313
      @jakegreene4313 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not claiming to be universal at all. Just ‘should-know,’ and frankly, why shouldn’t you?

      These are endings you 'should know', as suggested by the title of the video. Now you know which endings to avoid using! If you know the rules and cliches, you can meaningfully break them.

      these are kinds of back up planes when you don't have much time rehearsal and do the arrangement

    • @JacobDupre
      @JacobDupre 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiroko Kaku you are right. The reality of working as a musician is you often don’t get much time for rehearsing or writing arrangements. Sometimes you only get the soundcheck to make it work. And when time is short, one of these endings will probably be your first go to, something common everyone knows and can remember at the show. So knowing them in all keys and some of their variations will allow you to hang with professionals. If there is a musician who doesn’t care about that and just wants to be an “artist” (pinky up), I guess they can just be happy always writing original endings for all their songs. They should just realize there are certain kinds of gigs they won’t be able to do. But again, it all depends on the kind of musician you want to be. This video is geared towards someone who strives to be well-rounded, not an artist with all original songs.

      This is for spontaneous real-time improvising in ensembles, which relies on cliches because not everything is pre-agreed.
