The dynamite may appear to us to be detonated, but it identifies as undetonated, so we should respect that and not speculate about how it was detonated since it wasn't?

The gas tank could have exploded and ripped the dynamite apart without detonating it.

It is sad for him and people like him. As he was different and smarter than average, he had many reasons to feel alone. I hope people like him reach out and find others who share the interests but are not dangerous and continue to fix, build and help others who could use their help and abilities.

Im from the same town and my dad knew him. He actually was quite popular and well respected in the community for the things he built. He taught teenage boys mechanics. He wasn’t just some lonely guy living in the woods as it seems.

I think he may have had undiagnosed ASD. It falls in line with social situations being awkward, and fixed interest and possibly even the ability to do the restoration and technical details with things he did and could do.
Suicide is also high in the community. Regardless, this is a really sad case.

I was 15 years old in 1979 while riding through Duncan BC Canada from Victoria when I saw a parked P-40 Kittyhawk, complete with shark face paint job on the side of the highway. I was totally blown away. Back then I was completely unaware of the what would become of the plane builders fate until just a few years ago when watching TH-cam videos on him. I do remember well experiencing that same awful storm in my hometown of Port Alberni the night that Granger Taylor disappeared.

It's sad to hear he didn't really have friends, and it's unlikely he ever had a romantic relationship. It's so important to be loved and accepted in general by your peers. It's not uncommon for lonely people to kill themselves from being socially rejected. He sounds like he was a nice person but just shy and awkward. I bet he would have been a very smart and interesting person to hang out with.

That is a very, very said tale of a brilliant and industrious gentleman that simply could not relate to others. I feel that it was extreme loneliness that drove his hand to taking his own life. Nonetheless, he knew suicide would not be acceptable to his family, so he did it in the most secretive way that he could. Again, this was heartbreaking.

I know we live in a very dark world. But who would want to risk having a violent Fourth Kind experience in exchange for leaving this world? I think Granger may have had a schizophrenic disorder that was causing those illusions of aliens. Plus, being probably under the influence of LSD. Probably led him to drive into the forest that night to detonate himself
Just such a sad testament of what loneliness and isolation can do to the human heart and mind. Granger seemed like a really nice and gentle fellow. I hope he somehow/someway found his happiness post-death.

  • @riblets1968

This reminds me of a Philip K. Dick short story, The Variable Man. A future Earth government finds that it needs the mechanical talents of a man from the early 20th century; one Thomas Cole, to be plucked from his place in the past, and put into service to make a highly sophisticated weapon, to be used against Alpha Centauri, work. The research team knew, conceptually, how to go about it, but they were having difficulties calibrating the weapon to actually go off in precisely the right place at precisely the right time. If it doesn't, the weapon becomes useless. Of course, Cole wasn't having any of that, which makes for a good story. In that sense, he and Mr. Taylor differed.

He would have been 74 this year if he had chosen to remain on Earth. For a 42-month voyage traveling at 99.9% the speed of light, it's probable that he would return approximately in the year 2060. This is assuming a nearly constant rate of travel. If any pauses were taken for sightseeing, he would be returning sooner.

I'm Canadian, & had never heard this story before. I feel so badly for Granger & his family & friends. Wherever he is now, I hope he's found some measure of peace. Thanks Dr Grande for this interesting Story & analysis.

Pretty much impossible for him to find peace. His death was painless, and he hurt his family and friends. They mourn his loss.

@@troy3456789 Yup, I live in Victoria which is only about 60 miles from where this happened. It sounds like he was desperately lonely but he didn't want people to know he committed suicide so he made up the alien story

It was a translation error on his part. They wrote “beam yourself up” and he translated to “blow yourself up”. Beam and blow are interchangeable in Alien.

As an autistic person, I really relate to him rather wanting to be with aliens. I also feel like I can’t connect with people the way I want

I have no intention of blowing myself up or killing self in any way, but this story does show just how devastating loneliness can become. It is a reminder to keep working on my struggles with social anxiety.

I think we're just lucky he didn't take anyone with him.

If anyone else came up missing, it was not laid out in this video. It doesn't imply anyone else came up missing either.

Im from the same town as Granger. When I was a kid my dad told me this story. He knew the guy and his family. His sister was my brother’s school teacher, and she was also eccentric. He actually was very well known and popular in the community and taught teen age boys mechanics at his home. He was also well known at Bob’s Grill and there are machines he built in our local museum. Everyone that I’ve talked to that knew him believes he really believed he was going to be with aliens, and blew himself up. This is a Mystery I don’t know will ever be solved, but it’s sure interesting. Thanks for making a video about it!
