Ive been watching some of the big youtube stars try and use old stuff to try and come up with new content. They wouldn't be able to farm if they had to use this old stuff full time like a lot of smaller farms do.
@@daehlerfarms I suspect most big ag farms will be fully automated in the future. They'll be the only ones who will be able to acquire the capital to expand, purchase new equipment, and afford all the costs and what not. Little family farms will find the costs prohibitive, and will be shut out and will have to find a way to adapt...or die. The USDA says the average small American farm is 230 acres, and rapidly disappearing for a number of factors, big Ag being one of them.
I worked at that plant from 1974 thru 1982. Built many of those machines, along with the 715, 815, and the grain heads as well. Right after the production of 915's came the 1440, 1460, and the 1480 axial-flow machines. Those were a major design change for combining. Very cool to see this old 915 still at work!
My Dad and Grandad had a pair of 915 low profiles. Both were Grain And Maize Specials. One was a 1975 and the other was a 77 model. The 75 model had a straw spreader and the 77 had a chopper. Both were set up with 24 ft 810 rigid headers. Could run around 3-3.5 in 50 bushel/acre winter wheat. These were the first combine I learned how to operate at the age of 9 years old
We had one on the family farm. It had a 24 ft header for wheat. I ran it for many years. My grandfather kept me in it. It was a good combine. We traded in 2 older model combines for it. We had a 181 IH combine with a 18 ft header and a 403 IH with a 16 ft header . They were both open stations. Having a cab on the 915 was great. I ran it till 1981 when I moved to become a mechanic. I went to work for international on the truck side for 37 years.
Our family farm owned one of these combines here in Alberta. Same set up as in the video. I spent many hours operating it when I was younger. We sold the combine 25 years ago. Father retired from farming. I became a mechanic and work on mining equipment in northern Alberta. Good to hear the sound of the machine again. Good memories. My dad, who passed away a year ago, would have enjoyed this video. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for this one, brought back memories. The last years that I farmed into the 1980s, I had a ‘73 model, right before the low profiles came out, purchased in about ‘81 or so. I put some money and work in it and it did a great job. It had the 392 V8 gas, and did not lack for power. Had 6 row-30” and 4 row-38” corn heads, and a 15 ft floating cutter grain head. I thought I was in tall cotton 😄. Hard to believe the capacity of combines today, along with their price tags.
Australia here. I love these older harvesters, we call them 'Headers' here. Simple, reliable and none of those weird electrical problems the modern ones keep getting. They did import some of these big American machines into Australia but the smaller locally produced headers were very popular. The Australian International 711 SP and its pto version the 710 and the later 725 SP and pto 726 are good mid size machines of the '70's and early '80's.
We had a 73 hi pro model that we ran 17 crop years thru. We went from a Gleaner C2 to the 915, quite an upgrade. Because of shipping issues they actually drove our machine from Moline to Mattoon ill with a layover in Streator. We ran a 25 foot platform with a Hart/Carter cutter bar and a 764 corn head. The older it became the more miles we traveled to find parts for it. It was a good machine for us. The 414 finally spun a rod bearing and we moved on to an axial flow. Good memories
When I was a kid our custom combine guys had 2 915 combines. They were the coolest guys! My brother and I knew we each wanted to have combines to do custom work……and after 32 seasons we still run our custom businesses in western New York! Great video Jason!
Neighbor had an 815 back in the 60's -70's. I thought that was big back then! I helped when I got old enough, pulling gravity wagons from the fields. Those were some great times! I'm in my late 60's and often think of those memories!!
I ran one of those for 5 years in western Minnesota working for a farmer. We ran a 20' head on it in beans. One fall it started overfilling the oil pan, putting fuel in the oil. We figured out which cylinder was running cold and bypassed the fuel for that hole and ran it most of the harvest on 5 cylinders. It still had plenty of power running on 5 cyl. It was a high pro with the older style head hookup so we got a feederhouse from a dunked 1440 and swapped it out so we could run an 820 flex head.
@@bigtractorpowerwe also bought a used 915 gasser, it was totally gutless compared to the diesel. We ran a 15' head on the gasser and still drove faster with the diesel with a 20' header.
@@bigtractorpowergood question, probably but not certain. I ran the gasser and my boss drove the diesel. One time I got stuck in a low spot because it ran out of power, after we got it pulled out, he went through the same spot with the diesel no problem pushing a 5' wider header.
That machine is really going thru that bean field very well. That is moving for those machines back then. I first started driving a 715 and we had to manually swing out the unloading auger. Normally after we picked off the end rows. This video brings back some good memories for me thanks for sharing.
I owned one of these, and had a 810 grain head for it. Used it for beans , and wheat harvest. If adjusted right, you left hardly anything in the field.
The 70's just don't seem that long ago to me. Hard to believe this was their big dog at the time after watching so much of this new stuff year after year now.
Was a head turner when it came out and still is today. Impressive machine, but I had to crack a smile at the 40 gallon fuel tank compared to my 7250’s 300 gallon
We have a 915 with RWA and the longer unloading auger. We have a 20' 820 grain head that we use on it. Works great it wheat and pretty good in soybeans.
It's funny how old farm equipment lasts for decades but new stuff only lasts for a few years and then they need massive expensive repairs. These antique machines prove that the old days were the good ways 😅

Love for you to do a comparison video of the 915 vs 7700 with all their specs and data. I wonder why IH had the offset cab...With Deere it made sense bc of engine position. IH was ahead of Deere with unload auger system...I'd be willing to bet Deere "took notes" on it.
Another difference between the high profile and the low profile was the the auger went straight out on the high profile and the low profile swung out and up, and that 414 sounds good
I worked for a farmer in 1984 who ran 6 6600 John deere combines instead of a few new 8820s. He had a full time mechanic, which was cheaper than new equipment.
We got a 715 and it hasn’t started up for years. We just randomly thought why not start it up. Expecting the worst, we just touched the key and it fired. Love old iorn😊
I have had 2 IH 914 's over the years these were the pulltype version of the 915 .They were very reliable and easy to work on . This was in the 1980 's before direct cutting became the norm and swathing the grain was normal in Alberta
My dad was too tight with money to buy a combine for our 500 acre dairy farm but in the early 70’s we hired a guy to combine for us and he had an IH 915. He put a hole through the rear wall of the grain storage section and ran an auger rearward that emptied into a 2 wheel grain cart pulled behind the 915. I’m sure that that auger and the auger on the grain cart were hydraulically powered.
Great combine this is a great equipement from 69 to 77 i love this combine and sound from this motor a farmer friend of my boss and mee have a farm in Kentucky and i have drive this combine great model us muscle
Our neighbors ran a pair of 915s and covered a lot of acres with them into the late 1970s. They replaced the pair with one 1460 axial flow, which was also an excellent machine.
Early high profile 915 were powered by the DT 407 the same one used in the 1456. later high pro went to the 414 like the one here. we had one of each never had the low profile 915's great machines
Neighbors bought them in the mid 70s. My dad always thought they were too narrow, not a wide enough cylinder and straw walkers but I always like.. we ran K 1660s for the 52 inch cylinder. 👨🌾
I built a “made in WI” gun with a BCM BFH 16” mid-length upper and Lauer Custom lower (LMT made) lower with a BCM trigger group. Flawless operation during a class firing 500+ rounds in a couple hours. Got a bit toasty shooting suppressed but no issues. I prefer it over my Noveske carbine length 14.5”. Buy once, cry once.
I don't know much about these machines but I can say that I'm impressed and wonder if a farming operation would do better keeping older equipment like this running as opposed to fielding new, tech-heavy equipment that costs a fortune to buy and upkeep. I wonder...

Liked the video. I wish operator would have pushed the combine more little 20-foot head, he may have been able to double ground speed. just my opinion.
I had one for 20 some years. definitely not much of a machine compared to the earlier 403 I had or the 1660 that replaced it. Never had the cleaning capacity needed in beans, but it did well in corn and wheat! It was always broke down, so even though it was a large capacity, you still could do more with the older machines that were much more reliable. That and the fact that IHC never really supported it with parts inventory back then!
I have a good buddy with a very clean early 915 with the crooked auger and it is like a 2 story house it also doesn't have the easy quick change feederhouse
That’s a clean old machine. Don’t know if I’ve ever actually seen a 915 in person. Or even an 815 for that matter. 615s and 715s were popular around here. There were still a couple still out earning there keep but the last operating 615 I knew of was finally sold when the old guy retired 2 falls ago.
We ran 3 lo profile models. 8/30 corn heads and 24’ platform heads. People love to hate on them, but we ran ours over a lot of acres for years with minimal problems. But I have to say, the 1480’s that replaced them were amazingly more productive. A neighbor had 2 815’s, and another ran two Oliver 7800’s.
In my area in the Thumb of Michigan, if you didn’t have a Deere then you a 715 or a 815. A couple 915s were around too. Many were still in use in the early 2000s but most of those were Edible Bean Specials since were in edible bean country. Grandpa and Dad ran a gas 815 and a 715, I think the 715 was diesel but I can’t recall was dad told me. 1977 or 78 the 815 left for a 1460, it was one of the first ones in the area. Then the second 1460 arrived about 1981 and they kept the 715 around for a spare until the mid 90s
I've never understood why IH kept the cab off to the side when there was no need since the engine was in rear. For that matter, why did the 1400 and 1600 series axial flows have the cab a foot off center?
From what I see here, farmers are wasting money constantly replacing their old equipment with new and more expensively priced equipment, a lot of which is no longer made in the USA.
I worked for a sub supplier to the combine factory in 1992 and was in the East Moline plant a few times. The 2188 was as tall as they could ever build because of ceiling height. It was the same plant that built the 2MH pickers. They called the picker line the “Red Rocket” because they built so many pickers in the day.
My Father Carl almost bought a international 715 his brother Called 3am in the morning telling him about a 1981 Gleaner K2 10ft with corn head 292 GMC straight 6 gas combine and we bought it from a kind farmer named Hugh in leaksdale ontario Canada 🇨🇦 he always kept it stored inside a local new Holland dealership said Hugh damaged a shield on his new Holland square he came right away to the dealership and bought a new one the parts manager said it's fine without it Hugh says it does not look correct my father the same way it shows he has equipment over 30 years old and it's very clean his pride and joy tractor is his fully restored 1948 Ford 8N he is just getting a little tune up to the engine other than that it's a beautiful tractor located in Douro Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 jason stop by and say hello to Carl you may get to film him and his hay silage setup we have many stop by to see the round baler and the Kubota 6950 2wd it's rare to find a 2wd Kubota 6950 for the wonderful beef farm we have it's perfect does the work with ease and a 6800 Kubota 4wd loader tractor cab and a handy fun Kubota 5030 4wd loader tractor a nice 67 Case 580 ck backhoe they all work nice on a total of 200 acres of land and rented fields and family farms
This was the last big walker combine from IH. The first Axial-Flow rotary was released in 1977. The 1460 Axial-Flow replaced the 915 and the 1440 replaced the 815. The 715 continued until 1979 when the 1420 replaced it in 1980.
That throaty sound of that six cylinder is pretty impressive. Plus that iconic Turbo decal. Enjoyable video.

More reliable than a computer controlled machine that'll leave you high and dry until a company tech can come access the "black box."

I would take old machines over the newer ones any day! You can make them work on bigger farms !

The 8-6 was the pto version of a 711 from memory.
Weird how the pto had a 45 bag box and the sp was only about 23.

Dad had a 4x4 915 and I had an 815. you didn't get very far down the field in 200bu. corn with a 6 row head on the 815 before the grain tank was full.
Don't see many of them but a lot of 914 pull types up here in the prairies. Friend ran one as recently as 10 to 15 years ago I think.

They had a great engine sound because the exhaust came straight out of the Turbo .

Is it the same engine like in the IHC 1455?
Did IH quit making this series when they brought out the Axial Flow or was there some overlap?
I've never understood why IH kept the cab off to the side when there was no need since the engine was in rear. For that matter, why did the 1400 and 1600 series axial flows have the cab a foot off center?

From what I see here, farmers are wasting money constantly replacing their old equipment with new and more expensively priced equipment, a lot of which is no longer made in the USA.

I worked for a sub supplier to the combine factory in 1992 and was in the East Moline plant a few times. The 2188 was as tall as they could ever build because of ceiling height. It was the same plant that built the 2MH pickers. They called the picker line the “Red Rocket” because they built so many pickers in the day.

My Grandpa had a 715 gas hydro.
My Father Carl almost bought a international 715 his brother Called 3am in the morning telling him about a 1981 Gleaner K2 10ft with corn head 292 GMC straight 6 gas combine and we bought it from a kind farmer named Hugh in leaksdale ontario Canada 🇨🇦 he always kept it stored inside a local new Holland dealership said Hugh damaged a shield on his new Holland square he came right away to the dealership and bought a new one the parts manager said it's fine without it Hugh says it does not look correct my father the same way it shows he has equipment over 30 years old and it's very clean his pride and joy tractor is his fully restored 1948 Ford 8N he is just getting a little tune up to the engine other than that it's a beautiful tractor located in Douro Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 jason stop by and say hello to Carl you may get to film him and his hay silage setup we have many stop by to see the round baler and the Kubota 6950 2wd it's rare to find a 2wd Kubota 6950 for the wonderful beef farm we have it's perfect does the work with ease and a 6800 Kubota 4wd loader tractor cab and a handy fun Kubota 5030 4wd loader tractor a nice 67 Case 580 ck backhoe they all work nice on a total of 200 acres of land and rented fields and family farms

This was the last big walker combine from IH. The first Axial-Flow rotary was released in 1977. The 1460 Axial-Flow replaced the 915 and the 1440 replaced the 815. The 715 continued until 1979 when the 1420 replaced it in 1980.
