    thank you for explaining this. I have an English copy of the Pali canon and have attended Vipassana retreats where a phenomenon occurred where I was outside the normal confines of time and space. Words became puffs and grunts with no meaning behind them and I was beyond the blissful state. It is my conclusion, after listening to your talks, that I had proceeded to the 4th jhana. Thanks again. I continue to meditate daily, and with your assistance, come to understand more and progress further.

    I wonder if I stumbled into this state unintentionally recently? Over 2 years of practicing meditation seriously, maybe 10-15 times I’ve experienced psychedelic-like visuals not dissimilar to the overlapping colors and shapes seen in this video’s thumbnail. Only this last time, I noticed that I was a bit too much in awe of it and reminded myself that pursuing the fireworks and clinging to the cool experience was not the aim. I also followed up by reminding myself to also not judge or be harsh on myself for that either.
    And somehow when I relinquished all judgments of the fireworks/bliss, I entered a markedly different state of inner experience which was luminous, peaceful, and stable. For what it’s worth, I did not feel it in my body; in fact, it was more like I forgot I even had a body. I guess that’s where I land on the Jhana debate 😅 Thanks as always for the thought-provoking content Doug!

    I briefly reached this Jhana in my body yesterday. Definitely felt endorphins of some kind in the middle of the day in California.

    Doug, Im more of a speculation-metaphysics kind of guy, don't dig secular vibes. However You present skillful means for anyone to listen, no background needed. Good luck in further practise! My kind thoughts are with U man.

    Great work Professor! "Trying" to quiet the mind, "trying" to do anything is itself an obstacle to bliss. Instead, as the mind settles into its own nature, rapture gives way to bliss necessarily as the mind grows still no longer projecting itself onto other, nor the notion of other. The mind becomes the object of meditation itself. Those that believe this is not experienced in the body typically hold the view of rejection of the body. This is inconsistent with equanimity as rejection and acceptance arise; inconsistent with actual experience of this state of bliss, in which the notion of self continues to persist.

    Someway too complex ideas when going from one jhana to next. But they must be well understood by practice of jhanas as a part of life. Thank you for explaining

    I listened to a discussion by Ajahn Brahm, I believe on the Anapanasati Sutta (30-06-2013), and also read his (quite strict) text on the jhana.
    Paraphrasing, he argues that the body can also be seen as the "breath-body" (for the Anapanasati Sutta), which indicates only all phenomena connected to the breath, whether the physical sensation or some mind object. So the jhana based upon that are the breath in some way. And only the formless jhana let go of the breath as a (partial) focus object.
    Besides, Ajahn Brahm argues that throughout the jhanas (not the formless ones), the breath is only perceived through the mind sense. Not touch or anything else.
    But I might be misremembering it. These things are quite subtle.

      Yes, there are many different practice styles and Ajahn Brahm is a famous jhāna practitioner.

    Theres is relation between the Jhana, Tathagata and Citta? I mean, the Jhana maybe is the fruit of the Anatta via negativa metodologics roots by the Sati/Samathi.

    Perhaps the jhanas are felt in the _subtle_ (etheric) body 😮Until one reaches the formless realms...?

    Hi Doug, do secular Buddhists believe enlightenment and nirvana are possible?

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the person, so there's no simple answer.

  • @krieghart5515

    Maybe that feeling of rapture is like training wheels to get to the "feeling" of pure bliss, where rapture is the physical feeling and bliss is just pure awareness? I can see pleasure in the body as not being some nondualistic thing but more of a gateway to be left behind. This third step seems complicated.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is that these steps are most fully understood through experience, and it may well be that different people experience them somewhat differently.
