Prepper Pantry Tour - My Latest Organization Strategy to Create More Space

  • Creating enough space to store food can be a bit challenging. Thanks to some inspiration from a friend, I overhauled my kitchen pantry. I'm so glad that I did. When I finished, I had significantly more space and everything was organized. I love the improvements.
In this video, I take you on a genuinely embarrassing tour of my disorganized pantry. The finished pantry has plenty of room for a "stock up" trip to the grocery store.
I purchased these organizers for my pantry from Amazon and am happy with them.

Good, work, but quite a different approach than we took! We have an inconspicuous pantry for normal use and a separate cellar for our preppings. That cellar is about 12 by 12 feet. When you open the door, you only see something like a book closet, filled with plastic stuff. This is to hide the real cellar. You have to push the closet inside the cellar (it has wheels) and then you can enter the cellar. The cellar is filled with the cheepest possible wooden racks that I could find (when we ever need to eat our supplies, I can use the racks as fire wood). Not just the walls but also the middle of the cellar is filled with three rows of racks. The cellar is filled for 90 percent with canned food, since canned food can be eaten without preparation and contains it's own liquid. Mostly canned bread, canned beans, canned rice, canned pasta, canned soup, canned vegetables. The other 5 percent are buckets filled with uncooked rice and uncooked pasta. The reason that there is relatively little uncooked stuff, is that when SHTF, you might not have fuel or clean water available to cook you meals. I put all the cans in cardboard boxes (each containing six cans) - so that when we might have to leave our house (which we try to avoid at all costs), we can load the boxes as fast as possible into a trailer. In total there is a supply to sustain two people for two years - or eight people for 6 months.

One tip that I am proud of is using the hanging shoe bag in my pantry. It hangs on the door and I store my small packaged mixes and drink mixes in each section. It saved me a ton of space. It was a cheap find at Walmart .

Same here. One in kitchen pantry and I also have one for often used otc drugs/ band aids another for various daily vitamins. Bets the heck out of digging through drawer or bins.

As my kids moved out I put heavy duty shelving along one wall. I store all of my appliances and extra canned items, TP, paper towels, etc. in there. Once I pull from there to replace the pantry, I add it to my shopping list.

❤looks great! SPRING CLEANING ❤. It feels so amazing when you’re finished. It’s amazing how much stuff you have tucked away in your working pantry! My favorite space saving tip for my working pantry, I try to store as much as I can in square, straight sided containers. Like the ones you have your pea flour in. I use jars too (a lot😂) but square optimizes space better than round. Straight sides not tapered too! Look at how much space is lost in the gaps 😂 on tapered containers. And I’m a fan of putting my stuff in containers. Store packaging is designed often times to give you the perception that you are getting more than you actually are, anyone who has ever enjoyed a potato chip knows EXACTLY what I’m talking about 😂😡. I’m not a fan of storing air. I also put peel and stick floor tiles on my shelves. Super easy clean up! More durable than shelf paper. Lastly, if you don’t use it, loose it! Pass it on to someone in need of what you don’t use.
Thanks for being willing to share cleaning day with us!

Since I'm a single empty nester, when my washing machine died, I opted to hand wash laundry and bought a 2ft deep 5ft wide shelving unit for that area. I'm in the tropics, so washing laundry outside is doable year round.

Space is actually a valuable resource with us. We just finished filling our second 10x20 building. By the time they deliver the building and I have power and hvac put in its a small fortune. Soon, I will have a bedroom opening up when my oldest grandson and his wife buy their first home, and guess what I'm doing with it. We prep long term (5+ years) for 15 people. Thankfully everyone contributes but I provide the land and space.

I have a door rack for my spices as well. I put all of my spices in the glass spice bottles, which I reuse. The only big jars I keep are peppercorns and Kosher salt. Dehydrated veg like onions, peppers, etc, fruits and nuts are kept in mason jars in the same area. It’s been wonderful to have spices alphabetized and cuts so much time when cooking. One tip is I keep several spices as backup of the jars I go through quickly (cumin, garlic, oregano, etc). I identify those with a piece of masking tape on the top with a D for duplicate. I don’t use those until the first bottle is gone. Then I take the used bottle, run it through the dishwasher and refill from my longer term pantry bucket of spices. Then I bring it back and label it with the D label. That ensures I never run out of these spices while in the middle of cooking. This system works well for me. My biggest issue is the wide variety of staples I have. I store them in mason jars, but I’m finding I need to reduce the number of varieties. For example, do I need rolled oats, steel cut oats and oat bran? No. I’m picking one then not allowing myself to be tempted by sales. Just the varieties of rice and beans can overwhelm.
One thing I noticed with your door rack is you don’t have a back to the shelves. This probably won’t be a problem for you because you’re storing larger containers. I found some of my spice bottles would slip behind. I ended up getting some webbing (maybe 1.5”) from the fabric store and some stick on velcro. I ran a web band behind the door shelves. It helps hold the bottles in if I stuff the bins too full. My shelves aren’t screwed to my door bottom, only hanging by the top hooks.

      @MandMs20204 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I Keep only my opened spice/herb bottles in my working panty. I keep my backup/duplicate bottles in my long term pantry (which is a much cooler temp so they will retain their flavors until ready to use. Also, I agree that alphabetizing is a must.

Wow! It's amazing how much you had stored in that small room. I use an over the door shoe organizer for my envelope mixes and ramen packs. I also like having bins in my pantry. I can easily pull out the bin to see the items. The biggest challenge is stuff getting lost in the back of the shelves. Still working on that.

I love doing what you did…..showing ruthlessness towards my stuff. But, it’s not easy to do physically, emotionally or financially… Hard lessons learned sometimes. I love orderly home but with the abundance most of us have, the challenge is real. Recently we went through our LDS #10 cans to find more homes for them. I went to the storage center and bought 50 $1 boxes. Hubby boxed it all up and found strategic homes for it all. We put 12 behind our living room sofa (against a wall), covered it in a huge blanket, and decorated the top with lamps, etc, as if it was a console table. Nobody would ever, ever know! Diet changes are hard….but, I figure the things we really prefer not to eat when everything collapses we can give or swap. I don’t think I could have been as brave as you and given so much away. Kudos!

I put a decorative shelf just off the kitchen to put my ready made canned meals on and canned foods I need to eat sooner. If I see them, I'll be more apt to use them. It freed up space in my food storage space.

My storage problem is always clothing items and shoes saved from 10 to 25 years ago. These clothes either do not fit anymore or are hopelessly outdated. My New Year’s resolution for 2023 is to purge my closets of anything I have not worn or used within the last 12 months. Just to have some unused space in my closets where air can circulate freely will be a real stress reliever.

    • @bittehiereinfugen7723
      @bittehiereinfugen7723 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh, I know what you mean. My husband and I have recently lost so much weight that all of our clothes don't fit us anymore (I've lost 30 kilos since December - I look ridiculous in my old clothes now...). We are now gradually sorting out (we have to buy new clothes first, but it is not possible to do everything at once financially, money is not infinite, unfortunately), what is still in really good condition we donate to our local social department store, but a lot of things are no longer good enough for it. Instead of throwing these items of clothing away, I cut up those whose fabrics can be used as cleaning rags, "emergency toilet paper" or similar. I remove buttons from shirts and keep them, as do the drawstrings from hoodies and jogging pants. There's a lot coming together! I collect the pieces of fabric I collect in a specially reserved box. I would also like to someday (actually for a long time, but there was never any time or energy left) start learning to sew, then these collected pieces of fabric will definitely come in handy for me to practice with instead of having to buy fabric especially for practice. I think I've gotten pretty stingy in a way, but actually I think it's good.

Thanks for sharing. I moved into an RV about 2 years ago and got rid of lots if "stuff". We have since moved back into a house and I am working on both my everyday and LT food storage. I too cook from scratch. I'm in the south, so no basement. I have somethings in our shed that don't need climate control, other things in closets and under our bed! Still a work in progress. I love to see how others do their storage. I may not be able to do the same thing, but every idea helps! Once again thanks for sharing!

I have a larger space... (basement) and I have 6 shelf stainless steel shelves from sams club that hold a lot of weight... I set the narrow ends against the wall... and I come out 2 shelves and have 4 rows... that way when I date the cans I put in from one side and take out from the other side to keep rotated... and I have shelf access for each group... 1 shelf for meats and canned meals like stew chow Mein ect... the next shelf set for canned fruits and veggies... the next for baking items and spices another for boxed meals and rice and beans and 2 for fd items and #10 cans ect... then on the other side of the basement I have more shelved that contain non food items... like med supplies and vitamins and one a few foot away for my oil lamp collection and lamp oil and candles ... it just makes it so much easier to rotate when you can put in from one side and take out on the other so you use the FIFO method... and on the end of the row on the shelf... I hang the over the door show pouches that have like 24 pouches for "shoes"... but I use them for items like my canning lids and canning items... another is for snacks and things that are not suited for longterm storage... and another has some fd things like bags for the vac sealer and o2 orbs and some mylar bags ect

Basically, you 'Clutter Cleared', which is a great feeling spiritually. Who likes that subconscious niggling that something is messy? I feel that way right now, because the weather broke and we are having an unusually dry spring here in upstate NY. Actually, we had a mild winter, and there were days in February (!!!) that I could get in the garden and spread out the mass of strawberries that I can't deal with when I'm canning tomatoes, beans, etc. So my house suffers and I do that thing where I'm eating dinner at 8:30 and start to berate myself with, "Well, you didn't vacuum today," and I have to stop and think, "I didn't even sit down for lunch. I was going 90 mph all day in the lovely sunshine. We got the tractor and big rototiller out and fluffed up our second little garden where some OP seeds to save go. I picked rock. I planted in the hoop house." I do have space up high and I'm building more shelves. A 5' ladder and my step stool are my friends! Thanks for another great video Kylene!

One thing you might do is to contact cement some pieces of kitchen countertop laminate (you can buy it in 2 x 4 foot pieces at a home center) to the tops of the shelves in your pantry. I did that, and now I can put any wet item on the shelf and the moisture won't affect the surface (like it can with paint). Also, spills can be wiped up easily and there will be no staining of the surface.

I have severe autoimmune issues too, so I understand the recuperating time needed for sure. It is so rewarding when we get those big projects done but a "time out" for a while afterwards is part of the plan.
We turned a coat closet into the main floor pantry because it's close to the kitchen in our smaller home. It now has an over the door rack that adds a lot of storage area. Fortunately, we have an unfinished basement so there's a room down there for our larger prepper pantry area. Hubby has shelves in that room and food organized by expiration years, so we replenish upstairs pantry when we need to and restock the large pantry when there are sales. All that is good, but we have been running into problems using some things up before the best buy date for our family of three, so I need to meal plan better to include those items more and not buy so many with the same dates. We've learned a lot in the last few years and your videos have been a tremendous help, so we thank you for all you share on this journey!! 💞🙏

As part of a recent kitchen remodeling, we closed off a doorway. I had my cabinetmaker design a spice cabinet, to fit in the entire area of the old door frame, with matching doors to my other new cabinets (it is almost ceiling to floor.) The same thing could easily be done in between to wall studs.

Our main bedroom has a large walk-in closet with a twelve-foot ceiling. There was a lot of wasted storage space on/above the wide shelf that runs along three sides of the closet above the upper clothes hanging racks. So, we removed the things that were on that shelf and stacked boxes of Mt. House meal pouches, lightweight buckets of freeze-dried food and some #10 cans on that shelf. The seldom used Brighton and Dooney & Burke handbags that had been stored on that shelf and not used since one of us retired from office work were donated to a local charity that helps outfit poor women for job interviews.

I have been working on getting more storage into our 2 pantries over the years. The latest modification has been to add drawers, with labels, so I don't have to stack cans, etc. also moved most of my appliances to the bottom shelve that can be pulled out so as to not have to listen to my knees popping when I used to have to get down on the when I needed something.
The last time I emptied the pantry to inventory and clean it I painted it with the whitest high-gloss paint I could find which brightened it up.

What you didn't mention and I liked seeing was all the notes on the door jamb - I assume the kid's growth chart. I jus' gotta ask - what do ya do with split pea flour? For my tip - I have fallen in love with the macrame bags you can buy off Etsy to store onions, potatoes and garlic. I hang the bags from the vertical shelf support. They look interesting and is so much easier than bending over and digging into a dark bin (which is what I used to do.) Thanks for sharing!

Hi Kylene, We don't have a pantry in our kitchen (pantrys were no a thing when we built our home) so organizing our available cupboards and drawers was critical. We could only fit 7 of the #10 cans on our 2 available shelves and not much else. Something had to change. So we bought some 1 gallon food grade plastic containers with screw on lids that are lined with a gasket from Walmart. The contents of a #10 can just fit! Then I could stand 6 of them across 1 shelf which was better...but I kept at it and finalluy found that I could fit 12 of them on that same shelf if I tipped them on their side and double stacked them. I put the labels on the top of the lid. I just made sure the things we use the most are on the top. It's worked great! I also found that I could reorganize one of my drawers using different sized OXO containers. This allows my wheat berries, flour, bread flour, sugar, pancake mix, brown rice, brown sugar, and lesser used grains to be there when I want to use them. I do have bulk storage with gamma lids elsewhere like you do. But these 2 areas now allow me to have what i need and use on a daily basis right where I need them. I just refill from my bulk storage as needed. This works for us since there's only 2 of us at home.

I could not afford over the door shelving, like you got. But, I could afford an over the door SHOE holder. It works wonderful for all of my bottled sauces. I'm not sure we could fit a fridge in our pantry, it's so small and so we made the sacrifice of giving up our spare bedroom to make a pantry. I just got done doing what you did...UGH, took me 3 days and stuff is still piled up waiting on the new shelves to arrive.

We have a very small kitchen so we have a 6 ft plastic shelf unit in the basement near the freezer. It's very organized using three step spice racks for all our canned goods and clear plastic shoeboxes for pudding, jello, rice pasta or potato packets. We just shop off these shelves a couple of times a week and take that food upstairs to cook. It's our freezer that needs organizational help. I would welcome anyone's ideas on that. We have a chest freezer and it's always hard to find what you're looking for.

I went through everything as I was making dried meal pouches. I accidentally knocked a can of Augason Farms freeze dried food off the shelf. I realized that it did not rattle. It was unopened and sealed. So I opened it and it was a moldy clump. I ended up checking everything. The Augason Farms grains had bug infestations. I purchased them during 2022.
Buying food from the big survival food companies is a risk and I lost.

I have a love seat in the living room against the wall, I can hide 50 number 10 cans stacked behind it and no one is the wiser. I will admit that I have sacrificed my sewing and weaving room, the extra bedroom, to being a pantry with heavy duty steel racks. and the walk in closet is full as well. I need to totally redo that whole thing and reclaim some personal space, or I will go insane. I need a place to go hide and do my thing without people bugging me.

Question: I do not can. I like you do store freeze dried food in canning jars for use in the next few years vs. Mylar for longer term. I do tend to vacuum seal with an O2 absorber in the jars with the FD food. I generally leave the rings on the jar -- and I think you may have. I think with canning it is a no-no. Is it not good with FD food. PS. I do check lid is dimpled down for at least 48 hours before going into storage.

If there are bug eggs in them, they will hatch. That's why some freeze them first. I don't, but I use oxygen absorbers to remove oxygen. Bugs can't live without oxygen, and if you can vac seal the jar too, it would be even better.

Do you have any ideas for canning jar storage (not ones with food in them)? My home was built in 1905 and has lots of storage issues. I do have a shed but I worry about the seals on the lids during extreme temperatures, that it might make them brittle or overly thin causing them not to seal when needed (or come unsealed). Is that a valid worry or should I just put them in the shed?

I had this problem for a long time too!
Now I have a large wall shelf next to the cellar door, on which I put all the food supplies (of course only those that don't need to be refrigerated), also some cleaning and body care products that have a use-by date that have to be used up in the next 6 months.
I then put these goods on our "must buy again" list. When I plan our weekly menu, I always look at this shelf first and create the menu in such a way that it is based on what is on the shelf and has to be consumed; I take what I can use up to the apartment and put it in our pantry.
Whenever I put new goods on the storage shelves, I check the products that are already there to see when they will reach the best-before date.
Sometimes I just "visit" the storage shelves, check if everything is in order, look for best-before dates, be happy with what we have and think about new recipe options.
