of all the Beeching closures, the Waverley line was the biggest mistake in my view. Beeching and the government could not see further than their noses. No account was ever taken of strategics. The Waverley route would have been a first-class avoidance route now, when the main line to Edinburgh is closed for maintenance. It’s a pity that the current rebuilt line does not go at least as far as Hawick. The people of Hawick were cruelly cut-off in the 1960s and the current rebuilt line should have at least reached there. The same argument applies to the former Bangor to Afon Wen line in North Wales.
